This past Saturday at UFC on FOX9, Bobby Green and Abel Trujillo both picked up important wins on their quest towards title contention. Neither man will get much time to reflect on their victories, however, as they will both return to action at UFC 169 in February. And while they will again be appearing on the same card, this time they will do so while being pitted against one-another.
UFC 169 will emanate out of the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey on February 1st. The “Super Bowl Saturday” card will be headlined by a pair of title fights, as bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz makes his long-awaited return to the UFC, squaring off against interim champ Renan Barao in a title unification bout, and featherweight kingpin Jose Aldo defends his strap against the always-dangerous Ricardo Lamas.
Bobby Green has had an active few months in the UFC – at UFC Fight Night 31 he controversially stopped James Krause with a sharp body kick, and he followed that win up with a decision victory over Pat Healey at UFC on FOX 9 (Green had stepped in against Healey when an injured Jamie Varner had to pull out of the fight, and he did so only 5 weeks after his fight with Krause). Green will be looking to extend his unbeaten streak to 8 with a win over Trujillo.
Like Green, Trujillo has had his own controversial ending to a bout in recent months, when his fight with Roger Bowling was ruled a no-contest due to an illegal knee to a downed opponent. Trujillo maintained that the knee had struck Bowling in his chest, not his head, and the two were given a rematch this past Saturday. Trujillo would leave no room for controversy in the do-over however, winning the bout via knockout.
Here’s how the card is shaping up:
