UFC on FOX 8 Adds Robbie Lawler Against Tarec Saffiendene
UFC on FOX 8 will now host a match-up of talented welterweights as UFC veteran and former Strikeforce champion “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler is set to square off with fellow former Strikeforce champ, Tarec Seffiedine. As announced by the promotion this afternoon, Lawler and Saffiedene are to meet on July 27th at the Key Arena in Seattle, Washington.
Both Saffiedene and Lawler are coming off impressive victories over top-ten welterweights, and with a win in Seattle on July 27th, each of the recent Strikeforce imports will look to gain even more momentum in one of the sports toughest divisions.
Lawler (20-9) made his long awaited return to the UFC this past February, as he finished perennial contender Josh Koscheck by TKO in round one at UFC 157. The win propelled “Ruthless” up the ranks in his new division, and with the move to his new camp in American Top-Team, Lawler seems to have reinvented himself into a welterweight powerhouse.
Saffiedene (14-3) will make his UFC debut against Lawler, and is coming off a dominant five-round decision victory over Nate Mardquart to capture the Strikeforce title back in January. “The Sponge” put on a striking clinic against Nate, demolishing Mardquart’s legs to become the promotions last welterweight champion. The Team Quest vet will look to make his name in the UFC with a big win over Lawler, using technique to overcome his opponents vicious KO ability.
Stylistically this fight has excitement written all over it, as both Saffiedene and Lawler are proficient on the feet and fans should be expecting a slug-fest.
The UFC on FOX 8 card in Seattle also features another intriguing welterweight fight as Jake Ellenberger is set to face Rory MacDonald, as well as a lightweight bout between Melvin Guillard and Mac Danzig.
