UFC NEWS – Velasquez Coach Would Like To See Cain Win A Few Before Returning To Title Picture

“Cain knows he blew it, that he stopped before (Junior Dos Santos), but he’s confident that he’ll have the chance to fight for the championship again. Possibly in two or three fights from now. He first has to prove he deserves that chance, so he’ll have to defeat his two next opponents, or at least one in a convincing way so that Zuffa says “ok, you deserve another shot”. When Zuffa offer us that fight, we’ll work on it.”

“When we started training, the first thing I told him was not to trade punches with Junior. I told him not to stand before him because the guy is a great boxer, the best in the business. Once you do that, you’re screwed. I did my job. The fight presented itself, Cain stood in front of him for a seconds and Junior landed a powerful right hand. Junior came prepared, Cain was prepared, but the win went to the one who first imposed his game, and that was Junior.”

In talking to Brazilian media outlet,, AKA Coach Javier Mendez talks about his star pupils mistakes and road to regaining his UFC heavyweight title.

After being blitzed early in his title fight against Junior Dos Santos, the previously unbeaten Velasquez was dropped with punches and subsequently lost his championship belt. It was the first ever real sign of weakness for the AKA trained fighter who now has to navigate his way back to the top of the divisions through a gauntlet of killers.

What’s on everyone’s mind is whether or not the loss was due to his near year long layoff and shoulder surgery or is JDS really just on a different level?

i am a huge cain fan but i agree with coach mendez, i would hate to see cain step into the ring unprepared again, lets see him knock out frank mir before taking another run at the strap.

    • asdf says:

Cain is young, and obviously a bit stubborn and thick headed. His strength, also his weakness. I think when he said he learned his lesson, he really did. He always tries to trade, or take shots unnecessarily in the beginning, and then finishes. But, this time, he wasn’t so lucky. Now he’s lost his ego, and he should be, now, a smarter fighter.

  2. Rusk says:

Well with the Sf hws comming over to the UFC Cain will have plenty of fights to choose from

  3. Ninja Oreo Dollop says:

There’s a new crop of UFC heavy weights for Cain to test himself on. I think his main problem was he was too stressed to carry that title and all of those fans on his shoulders. Like it was a burden on his performance being champ and the new UFC poster boy. He’s young and will only rise back to challenge Cigano.

  4. Thetude says:

I would love to see cain ko chad griggs, that guy has a attitude problem

  5. Vincent says:

Dos Santos had alot of weight to carry as well I’m pretty sure he was stressed too having all of brazil wanting you him to win. But he came out and did his job and did it well, JDS is a true champion

  6. G says:

Velasquz-MIr would be an incredible match-up.

  7. Ray Ray says:

JDS and Cain are amazing fighters and both seem like very cool guys. Having said that, I feel like that fight was the first time we’ve ever seen Cain really tested. Carwin took at least 20 shots from JDS seemingly equivalent to the one that landed on Cain throwing off his equilibrium. Did JDS expose a kink in Cain’s armor? I guess only time and his next few fights will tell.

    • Ninja Oreo Dollop says:

I doubt he has a chin issue. Anyone can KO someone in the HW division. He just doesn’t have an auto pilot mode like Frank Mir or Cheik Kongo when they get stunned. Not yet anyways. Brock “Lunch Box Fist” Lesnar’s auto pilot is to do cartwheels when stunned. LOL

  8. A.James says:

Mir vs Cain. Let’s make it happen!

  9. Jeremy says:

Let him get some confidence in that shoulder too. Trust it again and then go dominate once more

  10. Nobody is gonna beat Cain not named Junior Dos Santos.

    • Mo says:

what about Overeem or Carwin?? Both good strikers

      • not a chance Cain would run through both.

        • mmaislandjunkie says:

carwin would knock cains ass out. funny how ppl overlook carwin, imo he put jds in the most trouble out of anyone whos ever faced him. an in shape and motivated carwin is the second scariest hw on the planet.

        • Was Carwin not in shape and motivated for his TITLE fight against Lesnar?. Plenty of guys who would beat Carwin hes top 10 dont get me wrong but he will never hold the title.

        • mmaislandjunkie says:

he would beat lesnar, he almost did the first time. im chalkin up his loss to lesnar as being not in shape for a fight going past the first round – before that fight he never left the first round. he would also smash cain. his speed was a factor against the faster jds but he landed some shots that would have dropped most other hws.

        • u act like he didnt train hard and to go 5 rds for a title fight. I dont think anybody beats JDS and Cain except each other. I would love too see any HW smash Jones though :)

        • mmaislandjunkie says:

well then why has he lost over 20 lbs now and seemed to have much better cardio vs jds than when he did vs brock? maybe becuz he knows some fights go past the 1st and he changed his training to be ready now. so if he has another opportunity at brock he will ko him or win a decision and if given an opportunity at cain he would beat him as well. im surprised u arent supporting the humble former steroid abuser lol.

        • lmao if you look at my favorite fighters i like guys that come to fight, guys who are willing to fight anyone anytime. I dont support roiders i hate em. Hendo and Chael use TrT. I give them the benefit of the doubt that they need it and their body just dosent product enough not from past roid use. If you look at the guys i support they all fit that bill.

        • mmaislandjunkie says:

shane carwins wins are all first round knockouts. he brings it every time. all his fights are super exciting. benefit of the doubt you say lol. cmon man do you know what steroids are? they are synthetic testosterone. trt is just regular old testosterone. which means its the same thing but trt therapy claims that it restores lost testosterone levels making the body balance its levels but if u take lil amounts of steroids its the same thing. i know u wanna turn the blind for guys u support but cmon man!!

        • magoo says:

Totally, I would love to see Carwin get one more crack a Jr, don’t no if he’d win,but it would be alot closer then the first fight!

        • lol says:

you said the same sh** about JDS…

  11. Wise Ass says:

The ring rust on Cain was obvious from the get go. His physique was less than stellar. He looked sloppy around the waist and scrawny up top. I even had a friend say “look, he has man boobs” mind you we are all fans of Cain. JDS deserved to win that night. I think Cain will be back sooner than we thin for a title shot. he just needs to shake the rust off and get some wins.

    • Wise Ass says:

in no way am I saying he’ll beat JDS the next time around either. Im just saying it will be a more competitive fight than last.

      • mmaislandjunkie says:

his physique has always looked like it did when he faced jds. he never had an overeem type of frame.

        • Wise Ass says:

im not saying he had a “juice” body but he was definitley a little more FLAT looking for the JDS fight. It is very obvious that the time off took a toll on him.

        • Wise Ass says:

i wish they would let us post images on this damn website. The 1 thing that Sherdog is better at.

        • mmaislandjunkie says:

hard to make that assumption in a lil over a minute of fighting. cain looked fresh with his leg kicks but he basically looked scared before the fight even began.

        • mmaislandjunkie says:

u can post links to the pic here on the news sections but if u go to the forums section you can post videos and pics.

  12. Wise Ass says:

right on Junkie thanks for the info man

  13. mike says:

Cain would do the business a favor if he swam back to mehico where he came from. This dirty mexican tried repeatedly to kick JDS’s legs because he knew about Junior’s knee problem. Once a dirty mexican, always a dirty mexican. Let’s see if his drug cartel can fix his next fight, only so he can receive another ass beating by JDS.

    • mmaislandjunkie says:

is ur mom getting gangbanged by the cartel or something? cains from arizona formerly known as mexico. gtfoh with ur racist stupidity mike the kike.

      • mike says:

maybe you should tattoo “brown pride” on ur chest so you can go show ur mom what a tough guy you are. cain could score a great role in American History X part 2. He’s trash and it seems like you are too!

    • Xaninho says:

That’s not fair. JDS came in the fight with a knee problem, but that’s JDS’ problem NOT Velasquez’s. What was Cain supposed to do? Not throw any legkicks?

    • SanSooRob says:

Get over it everyone will be Mexican soon

    • Wes says:

Mike you disrespectful little troll. Cain is from Yuma Arizona! Arizona you unintelligent fuckin prick. Get the fuck out of here with that negative BS, seriously you wouldn’t call Kobe Bryant a nigger, or The Korean Zombie (Chan Sung Jung) a Gook, or Wes Welker white trash.. as a matter of fact you wouldn’t say any of that stuff to Cain if he was standing in front of you….you little female..MMA is a professional sport, the UFC is a professional venue, is a professional site, If you don’t like Cain, then make your argument about his fighting style, or his game plan in the octogon, but how dare you say such sick things about another human, you should be ashamed, your a disgusting person. Stay the fuck off of this site!

  14. Xaninho says:

And this is the way a true martial artist should act. Lose a title fight, prove yourself again and EARN a next shot.

    NOT crying for a rematch!

I always liked Velasquez as a fighter and he seemed like a nice, genuine person, now I have even greater respect for him.

  15. Mike Diaz says:

Cains coming back alot smarter next go around. He looked very intimidated walking in the ring, matter of fact I saw a deep sighing breath coming out of him during his announcement, he was not focused. So he got caught and now has to work his way up. I say give him Mir, he will take Mir out with his stand up, gain all of Mir’s momentum and lobby for the loser of Lesnar vs Overeem……TEAM PENN!!!!!!

  16. 2-3 fights then back to the top.
