UFC NEWS – UFC NEWS – One Metal Plate And 16 Screws Later: Big Nog Broken Arm On The Mend

“Mr. Nogueira suffered a complex fracture to his humerus. The fracture began in the middle of the bone and extended to the elbow region. Unfortunately, the radial nerve [one of the main nerves lending a feeling of power to the hands] was damaged. The nerve is located in the area of the fracture, and the bone compressed it. Before the operation, he had very little strength in his hand and no strength whatsoever in his thumb. The operation involved an incision behind the arm. The nerve was removed from the location of the fracture and treated. The fracture was fixed with a plate and 16 screws, and now, less than 12 hours post-op, his hand functions are returning and the bone is mending. If all goes well, he’ll be back to full training in the coming months and should be 100-percent to fight in six months or less. We foresee him making a complete and full recovery.”

Taking to Nogueira’s official blog on ESPN.COM, the camp recently updated the world with the status of his broken arm suffered at the hands of Frank Mir during this month’s UFC 140 event.

After an intense scramble for position on the ground, Mir was able to lock in a Kimura in the first frame of action and without a tap from Nogueira, broke his arm to earn the win via submission.

Now, after a few weeks and a couple doctor opinions, “Big Nog” opted to have surgery on the fracture to repair the damage left. Surgeons have given him a clean bill of health and he is expected to return to action in the later part of 2012.

  1. Domo says:

A True Legend of MMA. I hope he recovers completely. Not a smart way to go out, he should’ve tapped but man what a warrior. Awesome first round Big Nog was looking sharp on the feet.

  2. BJPennrules says:

I really like Big Nog but I think he needs to call it quits…he cant compete with the best of the HW division anymore.

    • Ethan says:

while i dont think he can compete with the current top talent, i dont think he needs to stop competing.. a lot of people compete for the love of competing, it doesnt mean they want or need to be the best in the world. He should continue to compete but he should not make another run for the title.

    • "H"BOMB says:

dude are you serious? he rocked mir with some good shots mir was on quiters street before he was trying to get the sub

      • Aaron says:

Right on target there just needed to be a little more ruthless in his finish and he may have come through with the win. Mir very dangerous when he’s on the ground ask Tim Silvia Brock Lesnar when hes down get him back to his feet Men his stand up is very ????

    • THE INUK says:

he knocked out schaub who was a supposed huge up and comer, he rocked the shit out of Mir, and should’ve finished that fight..he looked better than he has in years…. he is still a top HW

  3. DeepSeaGod says:

He will be back…..but i bet he stays way the hell away from Frank Mir.

  4. stone cold says:

big nog can hang with anyone!

    • Clarence Worley says:

hang with and get a victory over are two different thing.

Nog has taken a lot of punches to the face, been run over by a truck and had his arm snapped in half.

He has won a Pride belt and a UFC belt. Nothing left to prove, no need to take any more punches. He is loved and will go down as a hero and an all time great.

It is time. Just my opinion. He is a warrior and he probably won’t retire, but most rational people looking at it logically would agree that now is a good time to “hang ‘em up”

  5. tK says:

big Nog as Jax in the last mortal kombat : D

  6. JB Spencer says:

he could try droping down to lhw, but that would create a big confusing fuck up wit him and his brothers nicknames. He really wdnt be ‘big’ nog anymore and same size nog just dont have the same ring to it…

  7. tkdwes says:

Big Nog can still fight but he needs to fight smarter now. He isn’t the only one who knows jiu jitsu anymore and if he puts himself in compromising positions instead of punching it out (like he did with Frank), he has a really good chance of getting his bones broken or his face dented.

  8. penn fan says:

he shouldn’t have gone for the sub… should’ve tried to tko him. oh well.

  9. EffLay&PrayFighters says:

love him, but thats what he gets for “again” under-estimating Mir, AND for not tapping out earlier, and don’t give me that true warriors dont tap bullshit… theres a THICK line between BRAVE & DUMB!

  10. fightgreg says:

He was fighting really well before he got sub’d. But after this win I’d say Mir is the most dangerous submission fighter in mma.

  11. Nog is better than Mir.

    • Jmad says:

lame attempt to get something going. you suck at trolling and at life

      • Not even trolling u faggot. Nog was sick the first time and should have won the last one. Go sniff your sisters shoe u pedophile and fuck her till ur mobile home tilts over.

        • Jmad says:

ur a fuckin weirdo for even typing that. if nog was better he wouldn’t have lost. TWICE. you fucking loser

        • This kid must be illiterate. Guess a 5th grade education can only take u so far. Did u read my comment. Did u see how sick and awful nog looked the first fight? Nog has wayyyy better boxing and a better chin. The second fight was how all him and mirs fights would go from now on. He made a mistake going for the sub but if they fought 10 times nog would win more. Mir sucks. and u suck his dick. Reply with something legit instead of making random WORDS caps u cumguzzling bitch.

        • Jmad says:

I’m not even a mir fan bitchboy. Your argument is invalid, if he was better he wouldn’t have gotten finished both times. First one to sub him and to knock him out, he is not better, he is 0-2 against him. Yea he had Mir in trouble but did he do anything about it? No. He got his arm snapped. It’s ok that your love for Nog keeps you in denial. Just go watch some of his old fights in Pride and maybe you’ll cheer up.

        • DBKlein69 says:

lmao @ jmad. well said my friend. i literally cant keep this smile off my face reading all these big nog fans talking about how he is the better fighter. u know it just absolutely kills them that their boy got FINISHED. TWICE!! literally lmfao :)

  12. Nick says:

He should of just tapped I mean is 6 months out really worth saying you’re a badass? I know the whole pride about yourself is involved but really I can understand a choke, but that’s a limb. I mean what if was a more serious injury and your career went out the window?

  13. Me says:

yeah he should have tapped. got his arm broken and damaged nerves… injuries like this often never let you perform the same again. not to mention going through surgery, being inactive for a long time, and the slow process of gaining strength in the arm again. shoulda just tapped and fought again a few months later. his hands looked way better.

  14. tdv says:

    ^^^^ “H BOMB”
So true buddy, skin of his teeth shit that was, Nog is legend.
