Interim means that the current Champion did not LOSE his title to another fighter and does not affect his record as champion. If GSP beats the Interim champ then his record will still stay at 5 defenses or whatever it is now. BUT if GSP stays inactive long enuff for the Interim to defend his belt then it becomes official and GSP loses his record as champion and has to start ALLLLLL over again to try to catch Andersons record haha

interim tittle is put into play when ever the champion cannot defend his belt within a yrs time, so he doesnt have to vacate the tittle
if the champion is out for an extent period of time, between 7months-longer Dana white will bring out the interim title for the two top level fighters in that respective weight class, in this case its Carlos Condit and Nick Diaz. the reason he does this is so that the division itsself does not stop! so now that diaz and condit fight for the Interim the winner obviously fight GS,so superbowl weekend when we know who will ultimately challenge GSP. But now with the interim belt around either condit or diaz’s waist we can set up who we want to be the next #1 contender. with GSP injured for almost a year he totally stalls the division if not for the INTERIM… hope this helps
