UFC NEWS – UFC 143 Adds Matt Brown vs. Chris Cope & Justin Edwards vs. Mike Stumpf
Two welterweight bouts have been added to February’s UFC 143 card as announced by the UFC this morning.
Justin Edwards versus Mike Stumpf and Matt Brown vs. Chris Cope are the latest editions to the evening’s card.
UFC 143 is set to take place at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas on Super Bowl weekend. Georges St. Pierre was originally scheduled to headline the event against the newest title challenger Nick Diaz, however an injury forced him off the card and Diaz will now face Carlos Condit for the UFC’s interim welterweight title.
Ultimate Fighter 7 contestant Mike Brown has hit a skid he definitely needs to get past. After entering the UFC in his post TUF life he went on an impressive 4-1 run in with his lone loss coming way of top prospect Dong Hyun Kim. However “The Immortal” currently finds himself coming off his fourth loss in his last five fights. He was last seen getting choked out by Seth Baczynski at UFC 139; the loss snapped the hopes of momentum after successfully taking out John Howard in his prior bout.
Brown will now face the next wave of TUF competitor, Chris Cope. Cope is a hardnosed TeamQuest fighter coming off of The Ultimate Fighter 13 show. He was last seen at UFC 138 where he was decisively taken out by newcomer Che Mills and stopped with strikes in just 40 seconds.
The two likely fight for their job in the bout.
In other action, Edwards, a TUF 13 cast member is coming off of his second UFC defeat against John Maquire at this past months UFC 138. The loss makes him 1-2 in the promotion with his lone victory coming against Jorge Lopez. His UFC 138 defeat was a last-minute booking and allows for some minor breathing room as he heads into this next fight.
Edwards will now face Stumpf in a bout where he may very well need a win to keep his place on the roster.
Stumpf fights out of Team Curran and has won five of his last seven bouts. However, his UFC debut was a lackluster submission loss to T.J. Waldburger. He will put it all on display in February to try and notch his first UFC win and stay on the welterweight lineup.
Both fights will likely be featured on the evenings undercard.
The latest UFC 143 card includes:
Carlos Condit vs. Nick Diaz (for interim welterweight title)
Josh Koscheck vs. Mike Pierce
Roy Nelson vs. Fabricio Werdum
Renan Barao vs. Scott Jorgensen
Ricardo Lamas vs. Dustin Poirier
Alex Caceres vs. Edwin Figueroa
Jorge Lopez vs. Amir Sadollah
Matt Brown vs. Chris Cope
Rafael Natal vs Michael Kuiper
Justin Edwards vs. Mike Stumpf
