UFC NEWS – Poll Results: Who Takes It Overeem Or Dos Santos?

In our latest polling here at BJPENN.COM we took to the fans to figure out who the favorite is going into the proposed heavyweight title fight between the champion, Junior dos Santos and the challenger, Alistair Overeem.

The two heavyweights are known for their striking prowess, the champion his boxing and the challenger his world-class kickboxing. But who will prevail as the victor in their fight tentatively scheduled for this summer?

According to our poll, which saw 4,170 votes, the favorite to win amongst MMA fans is Junior dos Santos.

The polling was close, in fact it may be our closest poll to date, but that doesn’t change the fact that the champion is the favorite to retain his title.

52.1% (2,171 votes) of you picked Dos Santos to win while 47.9% (1,999 votes) of you picked the challenger and his K-1 grand prix winning style to take the belt.

Thank you for participating.

  1. CanILive says:

it’ll be a damn good fight.

  2. Mike Diaz says:

Its hard to say Junior will get the KO if Overeem closes the distance on him and out grapples Junior. Though Dos Santos is a beast full of power and a far cry from getting man handled. Cmon, Dana…..set the date! TEAM PENN!!!!!!

  3. Julian says:

dang thats a hard one. Junior has the heart of a champion and he is in his prime. Overeem is past that. But Alistair is a big bastard

    • Unbiased Opinion says:

The scary thing is that I don’t think Dos Santos is anywhere NEAR his prime. He is still young in the fight game, young in general really. He has a few years before he hits his prime. But that’s just my opinion. He will have his hands full with Overeem though.

      • Bennie says:

Dos Santos is gay, for real, that doesn’t matter anyway, but he is. Allistar is over his prime, hahahahaha, your over oyu’r prime when you have a UFC title shot, current Dream HW, Current Strike Force HW Champion and a K-1 Champion of 2010, hahaha, stupid amricans, go cry about brock, I’m the UFC, I don’t even know Allistar, that says what a “fighter” that fag was, not real, just a fake show wrestling fighter that trough 1 good punch in his hole MMA carreer and that was against keith harring, and he bassiclly runed in to that one and brock didn’t even know what he was doing, I’m the UFC and one liver kick ended it hahahaha what a joke.

  4. Mike says:

Overeem has the advantage in power, he has more weapons than just boxing, and he has a huge experience advantage. I just dont see how JR wins without landing a lucky punch.

    • MJ says:

+1 JDS last fight was with a guy 3 inches smaller and not a great striker. Now he is going up against the best heavy weight striker, who has a height, weight, reach and strength advantage. Dont see JDS winning this, on the ground or standing.

      • Kenshiro says:

+2 Dos Santos is less of a challenge to The Reem than Lesnar.. sure he has better hands than Lesnar but The Reem’s striking is lightyears beyond his and The Reem is a better grappler and probably has better BJJ too. Not to mention far more strenght. I don’t see how anyone would actually put money on Dos Santos. I like the dude but let’s be real. The Reem is too much for him.

  5. David says:

    Overeem by knockout

  6. Ste says:

Either way its going to be good and most likely one of them will be going to sleep in the 1st or 2nd round. The fact that Reem seemed to push Brock around was a big thing. Reem has the kicks and knees as well. Im going with Reem on this one but its going to be close, would be an amazing achievement to go with the K1, Strikeforce and Dream Champion titles!

  7. Koshchek is a felcher says:

The only one to beat The Reemjob will be Badr Hari. Hopefully Dana will bring him to the UFC soon.

  8. Tim says:

Gsp would beat both by decision lolol

  9. SB says:

This Fight is gonna be over quick. I predict Overeem 1st or 2nd round tko. Even if Overeem doesn’t win I don’t see this fight going past the 1st or 2nd round. IMO

  10. MJ says:

Reem will win easy…JDS just has his boxing and Reem is not Cain. Cain was the smaller, shorter, non striker last time. JDS doesnt have scary ground skills, he has his boxing… Overeem can pick apart a guy that plays his game. Brock could have been a more dangerous fight. Easy day for Overeem, 3rd round tko.

  11. I can’t believe that, so far, people voted more for Dos Santos than Overeem. I think a lot of UFC fans pick their fighters based on popularity and since Dos Santos has been in the ufc longer than Overeem, people tend to vote for him. Personally, I don’t see Dos Santos winning this, even though I like his personality, I think Overeem is a more complete fighter. What if Dos Santos fails to out box Overeem, then what? Dos Santos is not known for his ground game, so failure is almost his only option. I am not saying Dos Santos cannot win, He can still get a lucky punch or wait for Overeem to make a mistake and move in, but right now my pick is on Overeem, because I give him the striking advantage, ground advantage and power advantage. Dos Santos has also a very very important advantage on his side, which is good cardio. Anyway, this is MMA and this sport is full of surprise, maybe Dos Sanstos will find a way to win. One thing for sure, this is going to be one hell of a good fight. My pick: Overeem.

    • Dan says:

Out box Dos Santos? I dont see that happening.

      • Hey Dan,

Overeem is the K1 champion. In K1 you cannot use wrestling nor ground games, which means Overeem gotta be damn good in boxing and kicking (kickboxing). The UFC likes to hype the fights giving each opponent a strong point. For example, the UFC was promoting brock Lesnar’s strongest weapon as being his take downs, which was just big time useless against Cain and Overeem (Lesnar himself believed in ufc’s bullshit). UFC is trying to promote the fights of Dos Santos with his boxing. However, against a K1 champion, I doubt he can survive the striking game. Can’t wait for the fight though.

    • Benny says:

He doesn’t have to be known for his ground game to be good on the ground. A Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt is a black belt whether he relys on it in his fights or not. JDS has just not really gone to the ground often in his fights. I do agree with you though that if he tries to stand and trade with overeem it could be a long night.

      • Ninja Oreo Dollop says:

Here, look at his record he actually has a guillotine choke submission on his record and his only loss is to an arm bar submission. Overeem’s only advantage in this fight are his knees. Experience is trumped by youth and talent.

        • phace says:

I think JDS is going to beat Overeem on the feet. Everyone keeps going on about Overeem’s striking but in MMA it’s different. I keep asking and nobody has an answer..Which reputable heavyweight striker has he beaten(Not K-1..MMA!)? He had trouble with Werdum on the feet and Brock blinded him in one eye during their fight. This fight SHOULD be good(hopefully) but I say JDS takes it. Also, as someone else said, JDS hasn’t really had to go to the ground so we truly don’t know what he is capable of there.

      • You have a point, however,
Brock Lesnar had a wrestling background, and he didn’t know how to apply his discipline effectively into MMA. The same thing can happen to Dos Santos, yes he has a BBJ, but since he didn’t really practiced it in MMA, will he know how to use it effectively ? The answer is I have no idea, I haven’t seen him much on the ground. Overeem has a lot of win via submission and ko. Which makes me less worried concerning the ground game and striking. If you wanna exchange your views after the fight or any other fight, my twit name is the same as this one here. Hope to talk more MMA.

  12. bizzle says:

    All hail King Dos Santos!!!!

    • Hasn’t even defended his title yet. Just like machida and Vanilla ice, Jds is a one hit wonder! Reem will be the next champ. No offense bradduh biz just my opinion.

      • Ninja Oreo Dollop says:

How do you call this quality competition @Chartmonster?

Overeem defended his Strikeforce Belt from a chump like Brett Rogers who practices MMA on his wife. A real tough guy….

He got the Dream HW belt from “Glass Chin” Todd Duffy who got cut from UFC after being KO’ed by a fat cop named Mike Russow. Who is Mike Russow?

Fabrico Werdum, I’m tired of telling that story… Probably his best opposition in a while.

Tell me, compare JDS’ past three opponents and Overeem’s past three and tell me who had better competition? If Overeem manages to catch JDS, he won’t hold onto the belt for long. Quality over quantity dude.

        • @ dumbfk dollop. ..question: who did u pick Reem or Brock? Enough said! Jds will lose and like brock you’ll see a SCARED junior.

        • Ninja Oreo Dollop says:

LOL, I picked the Brock Lesnar who beat Frank Mir, Shane Carwin, Heath Herring and Randy Cuture. Brock Lesnar didn’t show up. Overeem got handed an easy title shot.

        • Mo says:

Overeem would destroy Brock 9 out of 10 times ! It won’t matter which Brock shows up ! It could be the Brock that was shooting prairie dogs with a .50 cal ! Overeem smash ! Time and time again !

        • Ninja Oreo Dollop says:

I think .50 cal prairie dog shooting Brock with matching camouflage bag and Kung Fu grip could take Overeem. Just saying……

  13. CrAzyBK64 says:

Ok first ya need to get off overeems nuts Damm he’s a beast but ya acting like he’s the best. If overeem was as good as ya think he is he would of been in the UFC a long time ago. On paper overeem wins this fight 9 out of 10 but in the octagon I think u will be surprized. I just hate how fans are so fake ya jump everyone’s Nuts after they win like nate diaz after the cowboy fight. When dos santos won everybody loved him now everybody is forgetting what kinda of monster this guy is and far from his prime. All I’m saying is stop riding the winners nuts if your a fan be a fan not a nutthugger. With that said this fight is fuccing exciting overeem is finally here but dos santos is a monster I say let the best man win but I had to pic its dos santos idk I just can’t see him being dominated. But if I’m wrong I will admit and not bitch but my moneys on Cigano

  14. Zack says:

Dos santos is way faster with his punches and will put overeem on his ass like everyone else. People say jds has a weak ground game? He has never even had to go to the ground. I’m sure dos santos’ nogueria black belt is better than overeem no belt. Jds 4 th round tko

  15. slacker says:

Overeem is a bear. He will wade in on JDS like he did with Brock and punish him with brutal knees! JDS will get in a few good shots like Carwin did with him, but Overeem will prevail in the 3rd with aTKO or KO.

  16. Ninja Oreo Dollop says:

JDS is going to finish Overeem inside 2 rounds. His hands are too fast and too powerful for Overeem to handle and if Overeem wants to take it to the ground he won’t be able to keep him down because his take down defense is rated at 85% on the UFC website.

    Cigano! Cigano! Cigano!

    • slacker says:

haha… right on bro! Well, it will be a classic bear vs. tiger match then. Don’t underestimate Overeem’s head movement. He dodged almost all of Brock’s jabs – very quick, very intuitive! So, I am curious: who do you think will be backing up who when they meet in the center? How do you see that going? Do you give the edge to anyone in one punch KO power?

      • Ninja Oreo Dollop says:

JDS is so humble and smart that I think he would take Brock’s advice to heart. You know Brock should have learned from the mistakes of Cain but didn’t wtf man take a chance and get kneed in the face. I would have rather him had got KTFO going for the kill than fighting a tentative fight getting TKO’ed.

I don’t remember his head movement but I do remember him creeping on brock and keeping his head exposed. I don’t think Brock is a good judge for how well Overeem will do against JDS.

JDS will push the pace and probably use that uppercut of his and body shots. Overeem will use haymakers and knees. I think they are even for one punch KO power but I have never seen JDS stunned and his career being only in the HW division and not to have been stunned says something. He’s only been submitted in his career with 15 fights.

        • slacker says:

Yeah, I think Brock got scared of Overeem’s big right after he grazed his head with it in their opening exchange. I can’t blame him really. But I will always wonder how powerful Brock’s right was. He never seemed to connect with it in the stand-up, except against Heath Herring. I kept waiting, but nothing! I remember he just missed with Carwin to open the

One thing I notice about both these guys is they both box with a really low guard: both arms. Their heads are totally exposed. JDS took a good left from Carwin in the 2nd that affected him, but he did handle it pretty well.

Even though I think they both have KO power in the right, I think it will be Overeem backing up JDS with left leg body kicks that take away JDS throwing the right uppercut, and then following it up with the right. This will also help him stop JDS from establishing his jab, which he will want to do from the get-go. If JDS does manage to establish a “consistent” jab though, or can catch “some” – not one, but some – of Overeem’s kicks and take him down, it will make for a very strategic fight. The stand-up becomes even and it will be a great battle! But Overeem just has so many striking weapons. Cain never had the vicious body kicks and knees to pose a threat to JDS. He will have much more to think about and may even have to circle him rather than stand right in front of him. I think Overeem’s more complete striking options will eventually wear him down.

        • Ninja Oreo Dollop says:

I will always think Brock was wasted potential. He should have gotten in the game years ago but his disease really killed his career.

          Good discussion dude.

        • slacker says:

          For sure. Right on man.

  17. Ninja Oreo Dollop says:

He’s gonna need that glue to hold together his fair weather fans. It’s really trendy on to be a fair weather fan.

  18. slacker says:

JDS will be calling up Brock for a losers’ lunch and Cain will be under the table listening for helpful tips!

  19. E says:

OK. Cain could NOT finish 2 of his last 3 fights against guys way less experienced than Overeem. What makes any of you believe that JDS will finish Overeem? I never believed Cain was all that good, he just exposed Lesnar as the phony that he is before JDS had a chance to. JDS is a great fighter, but an Allistar Overeem he is not. The Reem will go right after Junior’s weak knee and show him kicking power that nobody else has before.
    Overeem by TKO or Decision.

    • Ninja Oreo Dollop says:

Cain finished Brock and Big Nog by KO before he got KO’ed himself by JDS. In fact all but one of his wins are by TKO of KO. Cain is really good and JDS destroyed him. Now, Cain didn’t have to fight Granite Chin Mofos like Roy and Carwin, JDS did and beat them by decision. If you are going to use that argument then I’ll use this one. How come the best “MMA striker” got schooled by a guy JDS already KO’ed (Werdum)? Werdum even beat him in Pride by submission…

Do you think Overeem would beat the Carwin that put a beating on Brock and Mir? I don’t think so.

      • slacker says:

In the last fight with Werdum, Overeem was willing to stand in the pocket with him and take a few extra punches from him because he had zero respect for his power. That is the ONLY reason Werdum outpointed him in the striking. Werdum never once hurt Overeem, whereas the heaviest, power punches were by Overeem. The only reason he didn’t finish Werdum was because he used up so much time rolling around on the mat after Overeem would shrug off his many attempts at pulling guard. Technical fighters who don’t have adequate punching power, but are just good enough at being elusive in the stand-up are a pain in the ass. They can’t win, but they succeed in making the better fighter look average. Case and point: Florian vs. Aldo.

        • Ninja Oreo Dollop says:

I hope Overeem makes the mistake of taking JDS’ power for granted that would make my day.

        • slacker says:

I think we are all going to be dying to see who lands that hard right first, and if the other guy can recover or not.

Would be really dumb if he underestimated that.

    • E says:

oops. tried to change it but this site wouldn’t let me post. I meant JDS, not Cain

  20. Ray says:

I dont want either one to lose, but if Reem makes the same mistakes he did with Brock, with the “Frankenstein/Zombie” move he did while attemptin the clinch, its gonna be a quick night.

  21. Forty ..Teem will bring his KNEES instead for Jds’s mouth piece.

  22. bpfightfan says:

this is tough to call, but id say Dos Santos will find Overeem’s chin and score a knockout in round 1 or 2

  23. Dennis says:

ok jds hasnt shown his ground game cause hes knocked everyone out or they failed to take hiim down so to say that he has no ground game is jus stupid an junoirs crisp boxing is onna different lvl then most cain does has stand up but jds was jus better overeem hasnt really faced anyone with the skills of jds hes always faced opponets who are just really good in one aspect of the game while jds is very well rounded hes like the gsp of the heavyweights he took down shane carwin whos by far a superior wrestler and stuffed takedowns from cain, carwin, nelson an so on and so forth and when anyone got him down it was only down to one knee and he was back on his feet as for overeem being at an advante in terms of power, reach, size etc.. everyone forgets how freakishly fast jds is and his pace is of the charts too commpared to overeem who got tired by the end of the 2nd round when he was facing werdum that being said if jds controls the pace and gets reem to play his game i see jds tko by the 3rd and you can hate all you want jus saying what know

    • slacker says:

Overeem has a strength and size advantage over Cain, Carwin, Nelson, and JDS. He easily shrugged off Rogers and Werdums’ grappling and take-down attempts (Werdum over a dozen times); he slammed Werdum and he literally threw Rogers to the side! He will take down JDS when he wants and will stuff him too. JDS better start working on his grappling now ’cause he is gonna get mauled by the big, bad ReemBear!

  24. bdizz says:

I want Junior and Cain to have a rematch – Cain needs another fight to take place ASAP – ring rust is a bitch – He F’d up that last fight. I’d really like to see those two go at it again – So i’m going for Junior.
