UFC NEWS – Machida Adds 20 Pounds Of Muscle For Jones Fight
This rare look inside the camp of Lyoto Machida provided by Brazilian Television network, Globo, shows various aspects of how Lyoto is training for his upcoming title fight against Jon Jones at December’s UFC 140.
In order to really appreciate the footage, you will need to click the “Closed Captions” option at the bottom right of the video, unless that is you speak Portuguese. While uncovering what the translation from the narrator means you will see that he mentions the drastic gain of muscle Machida has put on in order to give himself an advantage to regain his title.

TRT in da house..
Hater bitch
charts new favorite guy.
Marquez drinks his own piss too. That’s bad new because he lost his last fight.
now you just need a few inches added everywhere, then maybe you can defend yourself
Alright lets not get too carried away Machida. You dont wanna lose your speed here.
he’ll be just fine against jones
That’s not a very intelligent reply. Nor is it an intelligent insult. Therefore, it seems you are the idiot.
Bullshit u cant add 20 pounds of muscle in that little time unless ur on steroids.
When your eat right, train everyday and train the right way of course you can, not everyone who puts on some muscle is on roids, really sick of the MMA community crying steroids on every fighter out there, do you ever stop and think that they just have a good work ethic and are dedicated?
unless you are a bodybuilder, putting on 20 pounds of muscle while doing strenous cardio like that is nearly impossible unless you are taking something. I know football players that had to gain 20 pounds of muscle in an entire summer that struggle (the real way) sounds like you dont no what ur talking about. plus building muscle is a super slow process. people might gain that much in a year.
He said he put on 20lbs for the fight but in reality he has probably been working on it for a while, and are these football players you know doing nothing but sleep, eat and train like Machida is? I very much doubt it unless they’re NFL players. I know 20lbs is a huge amount of muscle for a normal person, but UFC fighters aren’t normal people they’re world class athletes.
hey derek you idiot they have stuff called whey protein….u can add up to 8 pounds of muscle in like two weeks……so like 1 month is just fine for 20 pounds, its not that unreal…..seriously dude muscle building is a slow process????? once you are a full grown man (which you probably aren’t) you can pack on muscles quickly.
No moron, you can’t add 8 lbs of muscle in two weeks, even with steroids that would be impossible. You should stop reading advertisements for cell tech and try lifting weights yourself. There is a huge difference between gaining weight (water, fat) and gaining muscle. A natural might be able to gain 40-50 lbs of muscle in his life.
@spiritsplice first of all get a better name….and i have done that im not sure what advertisements for cell tech you are talking about…i use something called pure whey, not celltech or nitrotech, or noxplode i use pure whey
LOL derek u have abviously never been in a gym, there is no way that u will gain 4pounds in two weeks just by working out and take protein powders n that stuff. steroids is not that rare in mma, they are on their cycles during their camps, its not a secret that most of the ufc fighters are on TRT,
hey spirit your retarded. you can easily add 5 pounds of pure muscle in a week while taking roids lol if lyoto was on roids youd no it. he would look like chael sonnen
holy shit ur a ****in idiot
Ok you’re far from the truth. Muscle gain be gained at almost any rate. Caloric intake>caloric expenditure = gain. Now what you gain is based on what you’re eating. There are supplements out there to maximize growth and when you’re making money like these guys …hiring physiologists …are u kidding me…I imagine it would be a breeze to gain if you had a list of everything your body needed to grow. Instead of using your “bros” who played football as an example because u don’t know what their diet was like or their regimen, do yourself some justice and look into things before you blast someone else. Good day sir.
ALSO just because YOU can’t gain it or your friends can’t doesnt mean it can’t be done.
Calories intake > Calories burned = weight gain, not necessarily muscle gain.
Agreed Derek….I fought professionally for 4 years before i met my old lady and had a baby. Before and during that time i incorporated heavy strength training including powerlifting before i got into fighting. I ate completely healthy, took my vitamins, supplements the whole nine yards. Shit i didnt even have a soda for 2 years at one point. It took me nearly nine months to put on about 25lbs. So definitely cannot see him doin it without a little extra help. And yes i trained every day 7 days a week my efforts werent simply not lack of trying
You’re saying you can add 25 lbs. in 9 months and Machida can’t put on 20lbs. in 7 months without roids?
He has a team of trainers, physicians and dietists to his disposal, and he’s used to training hard and fulltime.
These guys aren’t Joe Average with a bottle of vitamins next to their oatmeal dude…
I think it depends on how heavy your weights are and your particular body type. I started training my legs again after a sprained ankle and gained 6lbs of muscle in 2 wks on whey powder, chicken, eggs and other legal proteins.
kind of agree with this statement. but then again, they’re professional athletes.
Frank Mir Added 20 pounds of muscle before he fought Shane Carwin at Ufc 111. For someone like Machida to do that wouldnt be tuff considering he probably doesnt do much heavy lifting.More explosive workouts with lighter weights is his usual routine is what id presume he does.
Yeah leave it to the net nerds to talk about muscle gain. Im currently in a bulkin phase and for anyone who knows the ins and outs of body building (Im not talking about a 200 pound guy, u can be a 120 pounds and still be body buildin) u know that after ur first year of it ur lookin at anywhere from 5 to 8 pounds of muscle gain a year NATURALLY.
And this is comin from guys who devote all their time to bulkin and liftin weights, dont do any cardio. If u do any kinda of cardio like these mma fighters do u will burn some muscle off, like it or not. Ur body needs energy for high intensity work outs and will burn off ur muscles for energy if it has to (catabolism).
At the end, is 20 pounds possible in a year? Off steroids, hell no. On it? maybe, I wouldnt bet on it though. Keep in mind guys exaggerate muscle gain a lot.
Theres no way that machida put on 20 pounds of muscle, hes prolly exagerating the number. You know how much 20 pounds of pure muscle would look like? It taked the average natural bodybuilder 1 month to gain 1-2 pounds of muscle and they wouldn’t be doing all that cardio that machida does. Do ur research buddy.
In 7 months? you have no clue about training man….I gained even more in less than 7 months. It’s all about work ethic, the right nutrition and genes.
And no I didn’t take steroids allthough people around me asked me if I did cause I was growing so fast.
I agree. I’ve gained about 20 pounds of muscle. Shortly after I joined the marines and all my weight training and nutritional needs were easily to obtain the natural way. It’s possible.
it’s actually all that + increasing your food intake, which a lot of us small guys cant do lol unless you smoke a ton
which nulifies the work out aspect cause if you try to smoke a ton, i doubt ill see you in the gym
Well I dunno about you, but I can eat! I’ve always ate alot, I fortunately never got fat.
Guess I have high metabolism and the genes that helped me convert busting my ass in the gym to muscle tissue..
Agreed it just doesn’t happen that fast.
Have fun making weight lol.
that’s what i awas thinking…yea machida thats great but now you will just be exhausted…in my opinion he is already stronger
machida stronger? i don’t even think hes stronger with the 20 lbs of muscle..jones is too good with leverage and angles..he will rag doll machida
Your crazy if u think machida is stronger, did you see the jones v bader fight, id bet my soul baders stronger than machida, and strength wise jones made bader look like a lil girl
i agree jacob lee….u guys know nothing about mma if u think jones is stronger
For all those people saying machida added muscle to quickly to do it naturally, when wad the last time you saw machida? His last fight was against coutour in April. That’s about 6 months ago. So all the wannabe doctors talking about unnatural growth in a few months need to check themselves.
If he was lean at 205 before, where was the body fat he shed to add 20lbs of lean muscle? How is he gonna make 205?
When you gain muscle you also gain fat from all that food intake. Honestly? Do you think Jon Jones is a natural 205? Somehow he makes weight….
Machida carries around a lot more fat than you give him credit for
Damn, I didn’t know that so many steroid experts and sports doctors exist on this site.
hahahahaha right? or how many trolls get the one expert to talk lol
20 lbs of muscle, but still has to cut to 205.. Hope machida dethrones jones, but it no easy feat!
Machida has not just all of a sudden put on 20 pounds of muscle. He has been sidelined for a while and has been aggressively hitting the weights. I know because I was working with him last week and it really is only about 10-12 pounds of muscle while not adding weight like he typically does between fights. He weighs roughly 215 lbs but of more muscle mass and less fat to cut.
He looked very sharp and ready for Jones more than I have seen Machida in past years. He knows how important and dangerious this fight is.
so sharp that he’ll just be a blunt object when he hit jones….
sorry to say but Jones has the tools to SLAY THE DRAGON
JBJ ALL DAY
by the way ninjaman i saw jon bout two weeks ago and he’s more confident than ever.
Black House is gonna have four titles after this fight, hw, lhw, mw, and fw. if only they had some welterweight and lightweight prospects.
Erik silva!
Not sure this is a wise move by Machida.I hope he’s not substituting speed for power.I thought he was gunna come in lighter so he could move in and out and pot shot Jones. But hey what do i know?
I agree. I hope he’s just as fast…
Maybe gonna try and use his Judo?
9/10 I would say speed and technique beats power but this is a smart move on Machida’s part in order increase his ability to stuff Jones takedowns and avoid the manhandling most of those before him have suffered. I hope his speed, timing and cardio aren’t affected too much.
You obviously know very little about wrestling. You think putting on 20 lbs is going to increase his ability to “stuff Jones TD’s” lmao.
Well you tell me why he is adding muscle smart guy/wrestling expert? The only sensible reason to put on 20lbs on muscle going into a fight with Jones is to decrease your likelihood of being rag dolled and impose a will of your own. Machida already had KO power.
Shit man, doesn’t matter what’s being put up; all people want to do in this forum is bitch and argue. You could have an article, “UFC top fighters host charity event for starving children of Darfur”…forum response; **** you, fawk that, roiders, tree huggers, nut huggers, Sonnens the best, go **** your mom.
I dunno, maybe go…smoke some weed, or get laid more often. Seriously, it’s like a bunch of whiny bitches in here.
Couldn’t have put it bettter myself……….Very well said
i guess when you whine about whiny ppl it isnt as bad?
Well island, we got to use our words, right. All I`m saying is that you can`t come here for `real`perspective on MMA figting; yer so busy defending the fact that your mom isn`t a whore that your never get to the topic at hand. I think maybe I`ll stick to the stories and not bother with the rest of the bullshit. laterz.
thats how it is on most mma sites bro. im always down for a good mma debate and so are a few other guys but u always gonna have guys who just go online to troll and act like they never can in real life. as far as this article i think machida is gaining weight to maybe use his sumo background in case jones tries to take machida down. i think this fight is really gonna come down to whether jones can close off machidas movement and land strikes and be able to take machida down. i think machida is quick enough to sneak in a punch or two or maybe a quick combo on jones but jones has a bigger arsenal to work with, idk thats just my two cents on it.
All this talk about muscle doesn’t mean anything come fight time. Machida is a ‘Karate Kid” fighter and doesn’t stand a chance against Jones no matter how much muscle he puts on. He doesn’t have what it takes to beat Jones. His counter-striking style fits in very well with wrestlers. Jones will jab his face up and take him to the ground and elbow him out. Machida won’t make it out of round 1.
If Machida is the Karate Kid then Jon Jones is eating Crane Kicks.
Jones will grab that Crane Kick and he will rip it off Machida’s body then take him down and perform surgery on Machida with his elbows. Machida taps to Elbows in round 1. Wrestling Rules everything else is secondary.
Too bad for Jones, the wily ghost of Pat Morita only increases the evasiveness of Machida! Jon Jones has nothing on wax on, wax off!
Oh Crap, it’s another ‘Karate Kid” ‘Revenge of the Dragon” -fantasy nerd. The only thing that will get waxed on are Jones’ elbows to Machida’s face that will wax off his nose.
Oh snap! I bet he’ll wax his legs too. I saw that curious twitter photo!!?
Machida waxes his legs??!! that explains his ***** fighting style. lmao
man if ***** fighting styles can ko top dawgs like rashad i wonder what you think of sonnens gay rub down his opponent style. oh i get it ***** styles dont apply to homos.
Cobra Kai in the building!
This is what your hero, Elton Jon Jones looks like after his Brazilian Wax!
