UFC NEWS – Lorenzo Fertitta: “11 of our last 14 main events have fallen out”

“…our biggest issue lately has been 11 of our last 14 main events have fallen out and required replacement fighters. It’s like there’s been a hex over us. So it’s been a challenge to run the business how we’ve planned to. Forcing to shuffle in guys, re-scramble … it takes the steam out of your sails. It helped having the Fox card in there, and, listen, we’re still kicking ass by not cancelling shows like boxing would. If we get a stroke of luck with good health here, we’re off to the races.”

On The Newly Inked FOX TV Deal:

“We didn’t have to do a thing. We were like the pretty girl at the dance. We had every major media company talking to us to obtain our rights from our expiring deal at Spike. In the age of the DVR and things like Hulu, when you can watch any show any time you want, sports is really the one asset that’s must-see live television. I know it’s rare that a brand like Fox just jumps right in to something, but they wanted us, and we got a deal done over a weekend.”

On Steroids in MMA:

“We do a whole program with our fighters, bring in the [Drug Enforcement Agency] to lecture them about the dangers of PEDs. We urge commissions to adopt random testing — at anytime within 48 hours, they have to provide a sample. If a guy knows he’s only getting tested before and after a fight, it’s easy to manipulate. To me, that’s the weakness of other sports, like with the NFL players running from HGH testing. If you encourage testing, embrace it, there’s significantly less perception that you have a safety or credibility issue.”

On Taking The UFC Mainstream:

“Sports media — newspapers — have been late to the party. It’s a bit like what happened with NASCAR. This is what people want. So it’s just a matter of time before these editors realize we have the attention of Generation X and Generation Y. We are the main sport online. That said, I do believe we’re completely accepted as a major sport in the U.S. I still get the past stigmas when I go to other countries, but we’re past that here now.”

UFC and ZUFFA executive, Lorenzo Fertitta in a recent interview with The Los Angeles Times talks about the state of the UFC and steroid testing in MMA.

He brings to light a statistic that is widely talked about, but sometimes overlooked and that is the fact that out of their last 14 events, 11 main event bouts underwent changes. That is a very high percentage of changes for the UFC, more so than ever.

Will the “hex” get lifted in 2012, or will the fact that fighters continue to raise the bar in the gym and train harder and harder keep causing pre-fight injuries?

i wanna hear lorenzo speak more. kinda getting sick of Dana whites rants. dont get me wrong Dana is a beast. but every one in the world needs a break some times.

    • bertram says:

agreed. id like to see them both equally. i love dana and everything he does, but lorenzo is a beast too and he seems like one of the few billionaires out there who’s a person lol. seems pretty intelligent on the sport and like a true fan besides being an owner. id like to see them both in the media equally. dana for the brash and ‘out there’ comments, and lorenzo for the more subtle, toned down stuff.

      • riDICKulous says:

before buying over, they did countless of research just to find out what it is about and how they can manipulate the masses using it as a tool. dun be fooled. they’re never a fan. they’re just using it to control you idiots.

        • IknowMMA says:

What are you talking about DICK!?

        • Dustin says:

typical emo kid answer. you call it control we call it entertainment. if all of us lived on a island together, you would be the stupid kid in the corner. saying we are being controlled. but if you were a entertainer, you better control how i feel through the ups and downs, your a waste of groceries go cut your self noob

  2. Phalen says:

I believe the “hex” has something to do with the fear of being cut. MMA is not always a sport of redemption. When you only perform three times a year, and one loss can be detrimental to your future (especially with the UFC) the fighters have to feel a ton of added pressure to win. That’s why you find all of these guys who need to feel 100% heading into big fights. We still have some tough SOBs who will fight through the pain to get the payday and to please their fans. And kudos to them! But we will continue to see top level fighters pull out as long as losing could mean they go back to the bottom of the heap.

    • helwanilookalike says:

And the now provided insurance….if there hurt in training they’ll just back out…there is no more fighting with an injury so you can get it fixed after your payday…its right up there with fear of being cut

    • G says:

What’chu talkin’ about, man, most fighters fight only twice a year in the UFC. I WISH they fought three times per year, but that’s rarely the case.

  3. Guisseppe says:

The pressure of losing your spot is what makes the UFC what it is. Thats exactly how it should be for all competitive sports. The day you have athletes get paid or have nothing to lose is the day you will have a dying sport like boxing. You have two fighters who will make millions of dollars win or lose will never work. Athletes paid millions before they even win anything are all bad for any sport. UFC is doing what is good for the sport and otjer leagues should follow.

  4. sgt thai clone says:

I wont buy anymore ppv,s The bald headed guy told me to shut up-first row sports for all your free ufc fights–FREE Hear that Dana Free

    • james says:

yeah lets just put that out there for everyone so it can get shut down just like liveaction did, fuckin tard. keep it to yourself.

    • ThaGreenBandit says:

Oh really? And once Dana or one of his minions read this, how long do you think you’ll be getting your free UFC fights, genius? SMH…

  5. jj says:

I want to hear Lorenzo has to say about pushing to make MMA into an Olympic sport. Because believe it needs to be

  6. Long-Strong says:

lol despite these injuries, i’ve been enjoying the recent cards.

  7. JAT says:

still think most of the recent cards are some of the best i have ever seen. some of the pullouts have even made some cards better in my opinion.

    • IknowMMA says:

Yes! Like Diaz vs Penn? Or Hendo vs Rua? Not to talk about last card! So intense!
Nogueira vs Mir, Machida vs Jones? And who doesn’t like to see Tito getting his ass kick??
Bahaha “the people’s champ” what a joke.

  8. Ruben says:

Good to see the Fertellis speak, im tired of their puppet Dana
