UFC NEWS – Dana White Targets Summer 2012 For Dos Santos vs. Overeem

“Hopefully this summer. This summer is probably when it’s going to go down. Alistair wants to take some time off. Dos Santos is ready but needs to get some training in. So hopefully, this summer. This is one of those fights where no matter where this ends up, it’ll be exciting. But I see this fight standing up and finding out who hits the hardest and who has the best chin.”

On the debut episode of UFC Tonight on FUEL TV, UFC president Dana White was asked when the new heavyweight champion would face his first title challenger and to that White responded with a possible date this upcoming summer.

Junior Dos Santos recently took out the previously undefeated Cain Velasquez to earn the UFC’s heavyweight title.

His next opponent, Alistair Overeem, is coming off a devastating win over Brock Lesnar this past Friday to earn the UFC’s number one contender spot.

The two will now look towards mid-2012 to get busy in the cage to determine the number one heavyweight fighter in the world.

  1. Akid says:

Well we already know who hits the hardest and who has the best chin…. That would be JDS in my opinion!!!

I think we’re going to find out more than that in this fight…

  2. Ryan Seacrest says:

JDS is kind of a hoe though, if you really think about it.

  3. hypehpyehype says:

man this one is gonna be epic. dos santos hits harder with his hands in my opinion.overeem has way more weapons tho and his kicks and knees are devestating. dos santos also has a better chin. obviosly the technical striking advantage would go to the reem. they are really close in all areas to be honest. one of the hardest fights to pick in a while. people saying ____ will destroy ______ are complete idiots. this fight is up in the air. im more of an AO fan but something tells me cigano lands that big punch that puts him away. i wouldnt bet on it tho

  4. Mitch says:

I and i think i speak for all the MMA fans in the Netherlands hope for The Reem but the first one who knocks the other ones chin will be the winner …JDS is not as good with his legs .

  5. Six Months? says:

Six months off for ‘Reem and seven for JDS? That’s a pretty long break for both of them. Is Junior training kick-boxing for the next six months?

    • Ryan M says:

Pretty sure JDS is recovering from surgery.

    • Six Months? says:

Per JDS, surgery wasn’t that serious. At 141, JDS said himself he would be fully recovered in 10 days and back to training “normally.”

Too long of a layoff would suck for both fighters. I just don’t want to hear from the losing fighter that they layoff was too long. How about the end of April/beginning of May time frame? Beyond June is ridiculous.

    • Mike McMack says:

JDS had a torn meniscus in his knee. It’s not as major as an ACL tear but it’s still a serious injury in terms of pain. It must not have been a really bad tear for him to recover so quick, I’m just glad he choose to get the surgery immediately rather than try to rehab for 3 months then find out he needs surgery anyways. Let’s just hope both of these guys stay healthy enough to fight in the summer. You know how injuries go in this sport and it seems as though the longer the layoff the more injuries tend to happen.

    • Mitch says:

      he better does so

  6. Hector Figueroa says:

Just wait for Cain to come back and get back in his prime and he will i repeat will get his belt back. He made a mistake against jds and payed for it. Cain will be champion once again!

    • Henry Mckay says:

Cain, sucks ass! JDS just showed to world that Cain was so overrated.

      • zach says:

To say Cain sucks ass is probably the most retarded comment I have ever seen on his site

      • Mike McMack says:

Your nuts Harry, Cain is a legit top 3 HW. He’ll be back on a tear as soon as he’s healthy, just watch. Nobody other than Overeem should stand with JDS, Cain made that mistake and paid for it. Why would a wrestler try to stand with a boxer, I can’t understand it.

        • KingGareth says:

+1 mike. Cain just got caught, happens all the time. If his hand was where it was supposed to be, that punch would have stunned him but not knock him down.

  7. Casey says:

    JDS easily

  8. Say "NO" 2 Steroids says:

“Somewhere, Frank Mir is jelous….. He’s gonna think some other lame ass reasons how JDS will expose Overeem.”

  9. kel says:

chuck liddel would beat any of these punks

  10. E says:

    JDS all the way

  11. Kyle K. says:

    #1 Cigano
    #2 Overeem
    #3 Mir
    #4 Cain
    #5 ?????
I can’t name a number 5 lol…..Werdum is always up there Kongo is getting there too….Travis Browne is a beast too but it’s kinda early to put him in top 5 I feel like i’m missing somebody……..damn.
I think Cigano beats 3-5 easy Overeem is his biggest threat. I also think that if Overeem beats him that anyone of my other top 5 guys could and would beat him.

    • DOC SANTOS says:

Technically it should be Brock, right? He was champ before Cain and Cigano, and was just fighting for a Contender spot.

  12. SVUSO3 says:

Both got knockout power & anything can happen in this fight. I think Overeem’s big factor would be his kicks. Kick JDS’s legs, as the fight goes on takes the power from JDS. As for Dos Santos I feel his big factor imo would be his speed. Maybe he can slip a couple good punches in, tko or ko for Dos Santos.

  13. Mike says:

JDS obviously has a punchers chance because he has great boxing and knock out power, but Overeem is a much more well rounded striker. He has devestating knees and kicks and has just as much knock out power as JDS. I am not an Overeem fan at all but to be honest I cant see JDS surviving a stand up war with someone that has so many more weapons and is so much stronger than him. The only way I see JDS winning this fight is turn it into a pure boxing match and land that one big punch, otherwise I think Overeem’s multiple weapons and superior power will overwhelm JDS.

    • mmaislandjunkie says:

much more well rounded? ppl act like k-1 requires guys to be elite strikers to join. mark hunt is a former k-1 champ but u dont hear ppl saying how hes so amazingly gifted with striking. reem got out struck by werdum for goodness sake and got subbed like a noob in their first fight. jds is the better fighter between the two and thats the bottom line.

      • bizzle says:

I Agree, Schilt a 26-14 MMA guy went to K-1 and became a 4 time GP world champion, Sapp a no martial arts background newbie beat K-1 goat Ernesto Hoost 2 times in a row, K-1 is definitely the premier striking league but it also is massively over-hyped.. JDS by KO..

    • Mike..your a genius! Very accurate..Reem will shut everyone up w his knees! Junior even with 2 saints don’t have a prayer!

  14. Ninja Oreo Dollop says:

The only thing that makes me anxious for JDS are Overeem’s knee strikes in the clinch game. Other than that JDS won’t get bullied by Overeem, he is more durable than Overeem and his hand strikes and possibly ground game are better than Overeem’s. JDS trains with Big Nog and I have seen him attempt successful takedowns against Roy and Carwin. Both heavier opponents than him. Out of all the fights I have seen Overeem in (the ones that are available) he is reluctant to ground fight. I would like to check out his other fights since a good chunk have been won by submission my guess by guillotine. Overeem has a good guillotine according to himself and so does Cody Mckenzie. Also JDS has a higher KO rate than Overeem. It’s going to be an awesome first rd before the lights out for Overeem.

  15. KMF says:

Take nothing away from Overeem but I can’t see this going any other way than JDS.
Overeem acted all smug when he defeated Lesnar but in all honesty Brock was not comfortable in this fight. His last surgery was the key to why he lost, not because Overeem was the better fighter. He found a weakness and exploited it. If he fought the Lesnar from the 2nd Mir fight, imo Brock would have been the victor.

JDS has not looked like losing a bout in his UFC career and I don’t see that changing in the Overeem fight.

  16. GRT 3000 says:

Dana looks tired these days, he needs to take a break or he’s going to have a frickin’ heart attack.
