UFC NEWS – "Big Nog" Passes Some Blame On Herb Dean For Mir Loss

“Last Saturday I fought and lost via submission for the first time in my career; it was a bad feeling, but it’s part of the sport. Everything that happens in a fight is quick and the fighter acts most based on his instincts and reflexes than [what’s] on his mind. I knew I made a mistake as I tried to submit [my opponent] on a fight where I could have won by KO,” Nogueira wrote. “But when Frank Mir was practically knocked out I heard the referee tell me to stop punching him at the neck and that is when I tried to choke him. Mir put himself together and must be congratulated for submitting me. I checked the videos and I wasn’t hitting him on the neck, but on Mir’s side of the head, which is allowed.”

Taking to his personal website, the man many call “Big Nog” released this statement about his recent submission loss to Frank Mir.

It has been well publicized at this point that many think Mir would have lost if Nogueira had not gone for the submission attempt that led to a heated fight ending grappling exchange. However, with Mir apparently on the ropes from punches what caused the Brazilian to go for the submission?

In this latest recount of events he puts the blame on Herb Dean.

Sots to the back of the head, especially when one fighter is trying to finish is one of the messiest problems to solve in MMA. If you try to enforce the rule strictly and uncompromisingly like Mazagatti does, then you have the first Mir-Lesnar fight. If you don’t, then you get Belfort-Franklin or Belfort-Sexxyama. Simply, there isn’t enough time for the refs to judge if the shots are legal or not in real time. It is just an impossible compromise between fighter safety and fairness.

    • Jc says:

thats why vitor is one of the best finishers of a fight when he gets you hurt, he loves the back of the head shot

      • GET RID OF FITCH says:

JC you need to go back and watch Vitor Franklin because you couldn’t be more wrong. Vitor staggered Franklin with a legal shot and opened up on him and during the flurry Franklin turned his head after he was clearly a beaten fighter. Was Vitor suppose to anticipate when Franklin would turn his head away? If its anyone fault its franklin for not being able to take the blows or the refs fault for not stopping the fight fast enough. FRANKLIN GOT KO’D FAIR AND SQUARE

        • DAVE says:

i agreee,,,and even after he hit him 1 time behind the head when he turned but then vitor adjusted.;…

        • io31 says:

If you interpret the rules strictly, it doesn’t matter if it is single vs multiple shots or if the fighter adjusts or not. If the other fighter can’t continue it is either a DQ or no contest based on whether the foul was intentional or not.

I am not saying this to defend what Nog said but Mir was in a very similar situation in the Carwin fight (he went down but holding onto an arm trying to lock up something) and Carwin’s punches weren’t that different from Nog’s yet he wasn’t told to stop. We all know how that one turned out.

There is clearly a problem here and it is going to be happening again and again if they don’t find a solution.

  2. james P says:

this sucks. come on nog, stop being a sore loser. but then again i’m game to see another mir/big nog rematch haha

  3. edu says:

of course he doesn’t blame dean…anti-nog?

  4. Andy says:

Fighter Safety, should always come first.. it is a sport after all and as it is pushing to become part of the mainstream it should keep that at its heart… especially with the ridiculous amount of injuries incurred just through the rigorous training as we’ve seen throughout this years events and those upcoming. As it is just important for one fighter to clutch his victory when the chance is at hand it is as equally or more of an importance to ensure his opponent is safe when doing so (this is the referee’s responsibility more so than the fighter being aware of if his strikes are illegal or not) due to it being an individual sport (i.e. no one will earn his money for him or replace him if injured) therefore Herb Dean is within his right as a referee to make sure BigNog was aware of where he was striking Mir and BigNog himself chose to cease striking and attempt the submission.. all of which were his own choices.

  5. Nick says:

Wow man take the blame. Don’t blame the ref. He’s in there to protect your guys. Just lost mad respect for him. It’s your fault deal with it.

    • spirit splice says:

The headline is misleading, he isn’t blaming Dean, he is explaining what was going on in his head at the time. Maybe Dean had a bad angle and misjudged (or is an idiot, it is Herb Dean after all), either way what Nog heard influenced how he fought. That isn’t Nog blaming Dean though.

      • Nick says:

He said the ref caused him to go for the choke. He must of misunderstood what Herb Dean was saying. Herb Dean is the best MMA judge out there.

        • the truth says:

Herb Dean is the best MMA judge out there HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Take Dana White dick out of your mouth. Herb Dean is a coward lying bitch that is responsible for many injustices in this sport. He is to blame as well for Fedor defeat and he ignored the strikes in the back of the head, and thats how you find out he doesnt have the same criterai he is partial, he is a prostitute..

      • : ^ ) says:

it IS Nog blaming Dean indirectly! Not reading the rest of the interview/statement and just this small portion, Nog is saying that he stopped striking because he heard the referee say stop striking the back of the head! He is saying indirectly that if he never heard that instruction come from the referee, he would’ve continued to strike (and therefore leading to a KO of Mir, Nog believes).

Nog could’ve continued to strike in another area of the head/body, but he chose the submission attempt.

Your shot at Dean is retarded, as he is regarded to be the best MMA referee out there. BUT, I do think Dean could’ve stop the fight because Mir held that Kimura for a long time, enough time for Dean to protect Nog and stop the fight. But, I feel Dean took into consideration who the fighter was (Nog) and chose to give him more time. It was the wrong choice. I think we’ll see Dean stop fights earlier from now on and possibly other referees will too after this incident.

  6. Wise Ass says:

Geezus I lose more and more respect for this guy everytime the excuses and finger pointing roll of his tongue. You LOST TWICE get over it and man up to your own loss.

  7. Fighter01 says:

  8. steeler says:

what i think happened was big nog wanted to make a statement by subbing mir and doesnt want to take the blame for losing

    • Ly-er_Ly-er says:

Yeah i kinda see it like Big Nog trying to return the favor of Mir being the “first to knock him out” kinda statement. Like, “u were the first to knock me out, so imma try & be the first to submit u”! But nope, total back-fire. It was his “Pride” that became his downfall I think! LOL

  9. Jaedr says:

If frank was really that rocked nog would have gotten the sub end of story. He didn’t get it, so all this KO talk is a little lofty if you ask me.

  10. Mike Diaz says:

Seriously Big Nog, try to retain some kind of integrity. Next thing to be reported by Big Nog will be that the “ring girls” distracted him by being too loud during the scramble……TEAM PENN!!!!!

  11. DeepSeaGod says:

Bad form Big Nog…..Suck up the loss and come back and prove something. Herb did a good job in officiating, and he is one of the best in the ufc.

  12. .MRICKARD says:

It’s commonplace now in MMA that all ref’s are warning of potentially dangerous shots to the back of the head or neck (mosty head) when an opponent is getting hit with g n p punches from the top, Big Nog claiming that he was distracted in that moment only proves one thing…Nog had a mental slip. He’s seen plenty of fights and should know that the ref is going to yell warnings during the fight and that he should stay focused on landing good clean legal shots until the ref stops the fight as a TKO or to penalize him for repeated illegal blows. Tons of guys get warned about illegal blows and they dont always resort to going for a submission, most continue to punch. If Nog wanted to keep punching he could have, instead he went for a submission. Which of course is Nog’s bread and butter. The only problem was that he was fighting a bigger, stronger, and equally as skilled or quite possibly a flat out better fighter in Frank Mir. You got caught Nog, get over it.

  13. A.Sethi says:

I’m a Big-Nog fan and I think at his best he can still beat Mir like he almost did this time. But lets be honest here, he LOST and he is now just being a SORE LOSER. Also, Mir is a disrespectful douche.

  14. Robster the Mobster says:

Hindsight is 20/20 isn’t it? What the refs see happens in real time, without the benefit of instant replay and it’s not like the coaches can challenge the play on the mat and try to get it overturned.

You lost because you went for the submission. Everything after that is irrelevent.

  15. SP says:

Stupidness. If Nog was that much better than Mir, he wouldn’t have to complain at all. He would win – end of story. Quiet arrogance.

  16. jason says:

Just watched the fight again. At no point does Herb say not to hit the neck. Nog is clearly hitting the back of the head and Herb is clearly saying “don’t hit the back of the head”. Then he went for the sub. Man up. It was a fair fight and you lost.

  17. Busdriver says:

It just sounds like he was trying to explain what was going through his mind. Big Nog knows he screwed up and it was Herbs fault in any way. It’s Nog’s second language, cut him some slack. I would like to see this fight again, but Mir clearly has his number.

  18. Ninja Oreo Dollop says:

The main and co-main almost ending in a similar fashion. He is blaming Herb, he is just giving his insight into his last fight. He should have tapped to fight another day.. Pride comes before the fall.

  19. mike f says:

If Mir was so hurt, so closed to being koed, how did he submit you Nog?

    • Ninja Oreo Dollop says:

Mir is like that roach who won’t die, no matter how much raid you spray on him. He does this quite frequently when he is on the receiving end of an ass whupping.

  20. ShaneV says:

I have the video in hd and i just watched it again for the 50th time lol those are clear shots to the back of the head, being a sore loser aint helping Nogs case, he got out grappled…end of story

  21. BJwillbechampagain says:

If a frog had wings, it wouldn’t bump its ass when it jumps!

  22. LCM says:

More excuses from Nog. I was wondering what he would come up with this time.

  23. Joel says:

Regardless of what Dean may have said, ultimately, Nog made his own decision and got caught. No one to blame but himself. Plain and simple.

  24. A.James says:

Dean is the best ref out. He did his job. Big Nog should’ve done his.

  25. devildad says:

Big Nog is not ready for mir. If I was instinct, he would have continued to poud on mir to cause damage. So what if you lose a point? If he is/was as confident as he pretended to be. He would have beaten mir no matter what anyway. Bjj all the way! Oohrahh! Frank Mir is the man

  26. Diezel says:

Its always an excuse with this guy, Fuck him! He got what he deserved, Tap and live to fight another day! The white American guy Handed u your 2 most humiliating losses. The Only K.O you ever suffered and the first submission ( which is odd because he didn’t tap)…… He’s like the old Tito, Excuse after Excuse… People say Lesnar is an ego maniac, Not compared to this guy! He’s now OFFICIALLY A GATE KEEPER IN THE HW division, If he ever fights again.

  27. Diezel says:

This is all bull shit anyway, He’s from Brazil, Noted for being a submission guy, thats how he wanted to win, He took the only real chance he had at subbing Mir. He wanted to submit him and have that “notch” in his belt. He Jumped on a guy that he hurt in the stand up and tried to get a cheap submission out of it Instead of Out grappling him for it. Just my opinion.. He shoulda coulda woulda… But didn’t. Score another for the American!

  28. Chris Willis says:

He’s not blaming herb , he’s explaining what so many keep asking , “why he went for sub?” by the way , he gives Mir a ton of credit ! Y’all are idiots to think otherwise ! BJ come back ! We need you !!! Team Prodigy!!!!!

  29. ShaneV says:

Mir was doing well to hide his face and recover… he wasent expecting to be hit that many times in the back of the head….But its all good look at the result!!

  30. ShaneV says:

here are the shots to the back of the head and what Herb said

  31. Abe says:

first off it wasnt the neck, it was back of the head. If u watch the fight he actually was hitting back of the head. Who knows how the fight would have gone if nog didnt decide go for submissions. But its his own fault, Nog just needs excuses now to feel better about his losses. I dont think he will ever get a 3rd fight, I mean he was in both fights so its gonna be tough to get a 3rd fight now.

  32. Shawn says:

Just as I thought. Sux. Hope Nog recovers quick n back in d cage.

  33. Take it like a man says:

Dang Nog I’m starting to dislike you has a fighter. You didn’t finish the fight plain and simple, you tried to submit Mir but failed and got tapped out yourself. This is the second time in a row that you lost to him. Knockout and now submission, do you want a 3rd fight to go to the judges next. Shut your mouth and heal yourself up and comeback strong again…

  34. mmaislandjunkie says:

must suck losing to mir, the guy is a jackass.

  35. blahblah says:

It looked to me like he was hitting him on the back of the head a few times and then some shots on the side of the head with a couple in the grey area. Even by Nog’s account he wasnt being told to not punch him only to not punch him illegaly.

  36. frankieedgar says:

no more excuses BIG NOG…you can do everything what you can do at that fight and mir is the best fighter on that bout. dont blame the ref after you loose your reputation. accept it you were submit no excuses broken arm.

  37. This guy says:

    Tap or Sna… too late.

  38. Whaaaaaaahaaaaaaaaa! Fkn Frank Mir FTW!

    • mmaislandjunkie says:

the biggest waaaahaaaa was when mir lost to brock then threatened to murder him – talk about a whambulance. then he gained all that weight to avenge his loss to brock and what happened? he gets ktfo by shane carwin lmfao. franks a scrub beating old timers in the game and fat wannabes. every big opponent he faces he leaves looking like frankenstein.

      • Fortyb4five says:

“Franks a scrub beating old timers in the game and fat wannabes.” I think your talkin about Fedor there bud.

        • mmaislandjunkie says:

please youngin werdum would make mir tap and that big foot fight was just a bad night, mir had a few of those himself check his brandon vera fight. bottom line is u like douches- mir & bitchpin- ergo youre a douche.

        • mmaislandjunkie says:

and since you like playing the grammar card on everyone it’s you’re not your as in possessive. always see u correctin ppl when u make choke errors.

        • Fortyb4five says:

I’m gonna go ahead and no correct your terrible grammar here in an attempt at a comeback. Everyone knows how much a troll you are on this site so no NBD.

        • Fortyb4five says:

yeah…Fedor had three bad nights in a row getting ktfo by a lhw lol. And theoretically you just called BJ a douche so nice one.

        • mmaislandjunkie says:

yea sure im the troll, u hating on fedor is the no. 1 trolled move by all mma trolls. the man knocked hendo to the mat and dropped werdum and won the first round against big foot yet u discredit him so easily. stfu kid u talk shit but know nothin, u support douche bags and no name jap losers but talk down on fedor ur a joke.

        • mmaislandjunkie says:

i never said bj is a douche u bringing him in to try to make it look like im dogging the man is sad and pathetic. go on and hate on fedor, the most humble and respectful fighter in the game. go believe the ufc hype machine, i think i hear the sheep bells ringing for you.

        • Fortyb4five says:

lmao he didn’t drop Werdum. lol its funny you say go believe in the ufc hype machine when everytime I root for a Japanese fighter you talk shit. Go watch Fedor fight bums in Russian while Frank destroys comp. in the ufc

        • mmaislandjunkie says:

lmao big nog is comp? fat nelson is comp? kongo is comp? lmao, yeah keep up with the good mma observations all those guys mir has beaten recently are lesser opponents than werdum big foot and hendo. like i said the bells are ringing boy, go join your flock.

        • DBKlein69 says:

lets see. knocked hendo to the mat. dropped werdum. won the 1st round against silva. what do all those fights have in common? HE LOST ALL 3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! idiot.

        • mmaislandjunkie says:

yeah he lost but he was fighting well until he lost, only noobs would hate on him. he can still take a punch – unlike frank mir and brock – and can still put on exciting performances – unlike gsp. so say whatever u want but u really should be learning how to swim by now.

        • Forty.. I agree with almost everything u said except everything about Fedor.. Its blasphemy to talk about the lord of MMA in vain.

        • DBKlein69 says:

          enough with the swimming!!!

      • jj says:

You both argue like a bunch of children in a man’s sport. Let’s style it this way Mir IS a douchebag and fedor is overrated….Fedor needs to retire asap and also this arguement is irrelevant since neither will never hold a belt again on organization..So get all bitchy with your comments but the truth usually does hurt. Acting like fedor is a god is almost as bad as all these people on nick diaz’s balls when 1 of 16 opponents were in the top 10 and that was BJ. But the again I can see how fedor fans and diax fans go hand in hand cus they basically fight the same level of competiton.

        • mmaislandjunkie says:

you trying to be condescending when youre an idiot doesnt work well together. fedor should retire? he lost a few fights bfd, he still can take a punch (anyone taking the shot he took from hendo would have went to sleep) and he is still very entertaining to watch. i rather see winners who bore the shit outta me retire like jon fitch and gsp, only reason ppl tune into their fights is to watch them lose or if theyre just sheep cheering for the guys who win but dont care to win fashionably. i use to rag on nick alot but anyone who can put a beating on bj like that without needing to cheat deserves some respect.

        • jj says:

Several have beat BJ not that great of an accomplishment. And that’s only guy he has fought that were ranked top 10 in 16 opponents not very impressive! Just like fedor fighting many fighter who are on the downside of their career just like BJ was in that fight. Fedor did beat some decent fighters a while back but mostly he never fights top tier fighters. And yes he should retire I’m sure you sat there and said Randy to retire he lost a few fight and he fought much better competition in those couple then pretty much fedor has in his whole career. So yes fedor needs to get of the game when he’s losing to who he is and anyone who says he is the greatest is a fuckin tard. Considering if he was a true champion or the greatest he wouldn’t of tucked his dick in when offered to fight in the UFC no matter any disagreement. It was a matter of legacy and proving to all what so many restards clim he is. But no he avoided the situation and I’m glad cus he really hasn’t fought any serious people other than Benson is quite some time and he would of got broken. So fuck fedor and ppl claiming he’s the greatest Randy alone has proven himself more as an all time great on top of being much older against greater competition and he never backed down from proving himself and cementing his legacy unlike gaydor

  39. RussellOZ says:

if the ref tells you to stop punching his neck, well then thats easily solved, stop punching his neck, punch his head, continue punching his head, keep punching his neck who gives a fuck its not illegal, just cause he made the mistake of thinking the Mir was so out of it that he could pull off a guillotine is his mistake and his alone, deal with the consequences . . . in this case, franks the better man AGAIN, no rematch thanks

  40. A.James says:

You guys should just give Nog a break. Oh wait a second…

  41. KingGareth says:

Nog is always full of excuses. How many different ways does Frank Mir have to win? Nog lost because of poor bjj, not just because he went for the submission instead of the KO. Frank Mir was and is the better fighter.

  42. adrian says:

just lost any respect i had for nog.

  43. RJ KANEAO says:

Amazing story.. My personal and un-bias thought is that “The fight is done”.. If there was a scoring issue if it went to decision or if there was some speculation behind why he got the submitted like if he thought Mir cheated somehow then I would see reason to make claims almost two weeks later.. But coming out with that now is crazy.. I’m sorry to say but I think he’s just in denial that Mir got the submission and took his arm at the same time.. Nothing against Nog but I really don’t like that excuse.. But I really think Dean is a great ref/official.. I’ve heard people say he calls fights to fast but in this one he didn’t and look at the outcome.. Totally switched gears on the ground.. Mir just rolled over him and had it in tight, there should be no excuses.. But that’s just my opinion..

  44. feenom says:

Wow…even a great fighter can be a cry baby

  45. Mitchel says:

    he lost period

  46. STROWS says:

No point in crying over spilled milk, you got to take your wins like you take your losses.

  47. Khaos says:

I can see why Nog would think that, in fairness he was hitting the back of the head though and if he was confident in his ability to not do that on the ground then maybe he could have stayed where he was and gotten a TKO, I guess we’ll never know now though. Good win for Mir. If Nog is that motivated I’d like to see a number three but at this point in their careers I think we’ll see the same winner
