UFC Fight Night 40 Fighter Suspended For Unsportsmanlike Conduct
Last Saturday night, Johnny Edwardo shocked fans when he laid a barrage of punches on #4 ranked Eddie Wineland (pictured) at UFC Fight Night 40 in Cincinnati, Ohio. At about 4:37 of the first round, Edwardo laid a bunch of heavy punches on Wineland, to finally put him away in a surprising KO upset. And while Edwardo happily took home a well-deserved Performance of the Night bonus, he also got to take home a 30-day suspension for unsportsmanlike conduct.
For throwing his mouthpiece into the stands in celebration.
Though the 30-day suspension is about the same length as most routine post-fight medical suspensions, and would most certainly not cause any harm to his training schedule, it was just a bit odd that his explaination was officially stated by the Ohio State Athletic Commission as “unsportsmanlike conduct.” While the rules for mixed martial arts combat that are listed on the Ohio State Athletic Commission website do not specifically mention throwing or spitting out your mouth piece after a fight is called, it is something to be aware of for fighter when fighting in states that they may not be familiar with.
