Exclusive | Cesar Gracie: Gilbert Got a W on 2 of Those Fights – It's Time to Move On From Thomson| MMA News
The Cesar Gracie interview didn’t stop with his descriptive thoughts on the NSAC during Just Scrap Radio Show Episode 6. He addressed the crowd uproar about the trilogy that took place in San Jose, CA between the still Lightweight Champion Gilbert Melendez and Josh Thomson.
Q: Gil though he’d won, Josh thought he’d won. What are your thoughts on that fight?
“I think it was a pretty close and competitive fight. At the time of the fight I was there live obviously and I was like ‘oh man that was a close one I hope we got the nod on that one’ and we did. I did get to see the fight again in Showtime again last night and after reviewing it I thought…
Gil won the 1st 3 rounds, I gave Josh the 4th, then you took the 5th it was even he had the last take down so I could see that going to him. I thought Gill won 3 to 2 it was a very competitive fight. I thought Josh did a good job. When these 2 guys together, it’s always going to be competitive. The 1st one Josh won but no one knocked anyone out or anything like that. The second one and then the 3rd one was probably the closest of all 3 of them.
These guys train together back in the day a bit when Gilbert used to go down there with Jake Shields and train with the guys. They’ve know each other for a long time. They’ve had a lot of rounds in the cage. They kind of know what to expect. It’s one of those things. Styles makes fights. It’s always going to be a tough fight for Gil. I am proud that he pulled it out. Now hopefully he can fight other people which I think he matches up a lot” better with.
Q: Do we see a number 4?
“I don’t. It’s not that it’s not going to be another competitive fight. The reason for that is there are a lot of other people to fight. Gill has to go out and get some bigger fights if he wants to really get his legacy going.
I would love to see – the UFC obviously bought Strikeforce and the controlling interest of it. I would love to see someone like Grey Maynard or one of these guys come down and fight Gilbert Melendez because I think it comes a point where let’s say they have a 4th one and another competitive fight and then what a 5th one? It gets kind of ridiculous after a while.
It is what it is. Gilbert got the W on 2 of those fights and it’s time to move on. It’s time to move on and find other people and other fights.”
Just Scrap Radio Episode 6 gave everyone a chance to formulate their own thoughts and opinions bringing both sides of the story with Josh Thomson followed by Cesar Gracie appearing as guests.
