Bigfoot Silva States The Blood In His Eyes Was A Major Factor In His Defeat And Velasquez Got Lucky | UFC News

By Jamie McAllister
Antonio Silva in an interview with TATAME.

Bigfoot comments on the main reason for his defeat in the first round to Cain Velasquez at UFC 146.

“One of the main reasons I got defeated was that. I couldn’t see a thing, there was a lot of blood and my eyes were bruning. I tried to defend myself and not get hit, shaking my head to see if I could get rid of that blood, but there was no way around it. From that moment on my corner was my eyes.”

Bigfoot also comments on the referee temporarily stopping the bout to check his cut and admits lying to the doctor about being able to see.

“The referee interrupted the fight at the spot, but this part he might analyze what the doctors say. One of the doctors asked me if I could see a thing and I didn’t answer because I wanted to keep on going. Then he asked me again and I said yes, but actually it was really complicated.”

“If I had said I couldn’t see straight they would stop the contest and I didn’t want that. My goal on that moment was to keep on going, try to take him to the second round to see if my team could contain the blood.”

Bigfoot also comments on criticism of his game-plan for the bout as he went out threw a kick and was immediately taken down by Velasquez.

“Absolutely I made a mistake. I made a mistake and in that kind of fighting level you can’t do it. It was fatal. I trained many kicks but I got the game plan all wrong. First of all I should’ve tested his Boxing skills than go for the kick. Striking was not his thing and I knew it.“

“He got lucky He took me down but I was well trained in that matter. The prep for this bout was intense on that aspect. If I was 100 percent during the fight it was a matter of time for me to sweep, but with that cut I couldn’t see a thing and I was slippery.”

  1. Xaninho says:

It was obvious his vision wasn’t 100%, but the main thing was that terrible sloppy legkick. It wasn’t the gameplan it was the way he executed it.

On this level of fighting you just can’t throw legkicks like that.

  2. Runem says:

I think the blood did effect him a lot, he was drowning in it lol. But cut aside, i think he would have lost either way, Cain would have taken him down, kick or no kick and he was in for a long night of ground and pound

  3. Thom says:

    Cain would’ve won either way.

  4. Brend0magic says:

    Brazilians and their excuses….lol

  5. Jukka says:

Never noticed how whiney Brazilians were after losin they always have some type of excuse palhares yesterday now Bigfoot

  6. jbeamazing says:

wow I didn’t think tumors made you stupid

  7. Lol says:

Excuses from brazil once again. Dear mr big foot, in a fight you are suppose to beat the shit out of your oppenant and if they bleed even better. How can you use blood in your face as an excuse. Thats like sating ” i woulda beat your ass if you had your hands tied behind your back” dumb ass excuse i officially dont like him

    • Not You says:

Blood in the eyes can blind a fighter. Even though he’s posing it as an excuse, he would’ve been able to work a bit better without blood pooling in his eyes.

      • Lol says:

Of course blood blinds you dumb ass. Thats part of the fight. No different from ig sweat gets in tour eye. Thats your fault for getting cut. Shoulda never let it happen. Thats no excuse dumb ass. Of course bloods going to blind you!! Dont get hit then idiot!! Bet if he had a black eye he would blame it on that too!!

  8. maurice says:

yea, cus brazilians are the only ppl to make excuses. plz shut the fuck up with th0se dumbass comments. as for bigfoot i felt SO bad for him. he was actually doin pretty good with wrist control and not lettin cain pass his guard. up until that elbow opened up a horrifying cut. i remember watching it and thinking, “wow, theres literally pools of blood in each of big foot eye sockets.” once the cut happend, cain started teeing off on him. i feel big foot would have lost either way, but i believe the fight would have been a lot better and lasted a lot longer had the cut never happend. but this is mma, we all know elbows in this sport can be used like knifes. tough loss big foot. one things for sure, that win does not justify a title shot for cain. i say CAIN VS WERDUM winner gets title shot. i actually believe in my heart of hearts, werdum would submit cain.

    • nick says:

Umm, its not uncommon for people to lose the title and get immediate rematch. Cain already won a fight and should get another shot. He would have busted up Mir, who just got a lucky title shot. He deserves it, and is the #1 contender.

      • Mc says:

Don’t get me wrong Cain Is pretty nasty but who has he beat that’s any good? Brock? Nog? Bigfoot? Those are his best opponents and most people would say Brock isn’t that good and has little experience, nog- not that good and over the hill, he’s a punching bag. Bigfoot not that good. JDS destroyed Cain n he’s the 1 and only real good fighter he’s fought

    • Reality says:

What you’re saying makes sense Maurice. One issue there is that Werdum is already scheduled to fight next month.

    • Rodriguez says:

Werdum already got his ass knowcked out once by JDS…I say we wait for Overeem…

  9. GIL says:

luck has nothing to do with you getting cracked by that elbow, oh i forgot Big foot silva is the first fighter to ever get blood in there eyes, fool got ground and pounded out stop crying and look to your next fight

  10. maurice says:

@nick usually quick title rematches are warranted…cain vs jds 2 isnt warranted just yet. i mean seriously he just beat up bigfoot. 1 bounce back win over big foot warrants and immediate title shot? really dude? like it wasnt even a year ago when jds knocked cain out in less then 2 mins. u kno wats kind of shocking? not only did cain go to sleep quick against jds, but EVEN FRANK MIR was able to take more shots from jds then cain was able to endure. thats says a lot about mr velasquez. if they rematch in a few months, that will equal 2 knockout losses in less then a year for cain. cant be good for a man with a suspect chin.

    • maurice has a point says:

      A-Fuckin-men brother!

    • Phil says:

All it takes is one shot on the right spot…no matter how good your chin is. Cain is young and Hungary. Top contender for sure

    • f*&% off says:

I knolw cain is an awesome fighter, but it will be a cold day in hell if he beadts jds he is gonna hols rein on that title for a while!! I’m not sayn that cain wouldn’t put up a good fight but jds would eventually catch him. And jds cardio is way better than its ever been. & I DON’T KNOW WHAT BROC LESNAR IS THINKING HE DOESN’T HAVE A CHANCE IN HELL AT BEATING JDS!!!! GO BACK HOME BROCK UR JUST NOT UFC MATERIAL AT ALL… MAYBE VINCE WILL GIVE YA SUM MORE MONEY

  11. Jake says:

Maurice do you actually think there is someone other then Cain who could even give Jds a good fight ?yeah Cain got caught in the first fight but Cain disnt go into that fight himself he just did not look right, but that is not an excuse for a loss in mma! If you look at how hard Jds threw that over hand right to Cain and how hard the hooks he landed to Mir , the over hand right was clearly 10 times harder. And Cain was actually able to land 7 hard kicks on Jds. Mir literally did NOTHING. Cain went in with the wrong game plan and if he has his head set straight with the right game plan he is the only guy who can take out Jds!

  12. maurice says:

@JAKE no mir landed about 3 or 4 straight lefts on jds. of course they did nothing, but they landed nice. mir also landed more inside and outside leg kicks on jds. mir also made it TO THE 2ND round. and u cant say jds hit cain harder then he hit anyone else in his career. if you look jds fights against carwin, country, mir and cain, its clear that at some point in time jds hits each man with a big overhand right. when he hit carwin and big country with the overhand right NOTHING happend lol. when he first rocked mir it was from a big overhand right! but mir got wobbly and backed towards the cage, but he didnt drop like cain did. and to answer ur question, NO, i dont think any current hw will give jds a good fight. cains a great fighter, but he will never be able to bang with jds, and jds takedown defense will always be too much. cain HAS to strike with jds to set up takedowns, and thats where he will always fail. only other option is to just shoot blind on jds, which would be dumb. and cain might have not been 100 percent, but cigano wasnt 100 percent either for that fight. i think the ufc should keep booking jds vs carwin or roy nelson. simply because they got the chin to hang with jds, which means they will always have enough time to set something up. lmao

  13. Nick says:

BULL FUCKING SHIT. That is all. Well one more thing. It’s like every time a Brazilian fighter loses there’s always an excuse. No he didn’t get lucky, he beat the fuck out of you. Just say he was the better fighter that day then leave.

  14. maurice says:

most of bj penn losses are legit excuses, but an excuse none the less.
rampage jackson blames knee for loss.
gsp blames eye poke for bad showing against shields.
pettis blames guida bitch ass lay and prey for his loss.
shane carwin claimed long lay off as a excuse for the jds fight.
reem blamed his broke toe for the bad showing against werdum.
Nick diaz could have finished the fight with a armlock, so he claims, but didnt because he thought he had the fight won. the LIST OF EXCUSES GOES ON AND ON. i luv how u ignore every other fighters excuses, but bash ONLY the Brazilians. do u know how fucking ignorant that makes u look?
    @NICK go kill urself.

    • Spydr says:

Dude get off jds’s nuts! Wow really? Is there room in his cup for you as well? Yes jr is good but he will get beat…

  15. mike says:

Who cares, Junior will send brownie brown pride back to mehico real soon. Cain will need to show border patrol his new tattoo on his back that will read “JDS beat my ass twice”

    • Rodriguez says:

Again with your dumb ass bringing race into this! Man when I tell your mom tonight she is gonna be pissed that you aint respecting your new daddy’s culture!

  16. jake says:

Bigfoot sucks he has no buisness being in there with Cain if it wasnt for the ref Cain would have killed him face it Bigfoot sucks he will always suck he has no chance in the ufc have you all seen him fight before he only beats nobays and hasbeens he will never beat a current top 5 or prob not even a current top 10 and next time he fights in the ufc he will become a highlite reel Beatdown for his aponent just remember that I said it first Bigfoot is going to get the big boot from the ufc when he doesnt beat anyone.

  17. Maka says:

Legitimate excuse and I was saying it during the fight. Sucks it went down that way, but it is what it is. Not that I think he would have won the fight, but it definitely would have been more of a challenge for Cain if he was able to see.

Not sure how many people have had blood in your eyes, but it does suck and burn like hell. Hopefully he doesn’t get set too far back and congrats to Cain.

  18. jake says:

If Bigfoot had goggles on it wouldnt matter Bigfoot would be no challenge to Cain in anyway you see him fight in strikeforce he is slow and sloppy and gasses he is in now way shape or form will Bigfoot every be a challenge for Cain if they fought 100 times Cain would beat bim 101 times ask danial cormier caines training partner he kod Bigfoot in 3 min Bigfoot sucks I mean who was the last person Bigfoot beat was that old washed up fighter that was to scared to fight in the ufc what was his name oh ya fedor the
Guy who maid a living beating guys who on the end
there careers. Im not impressedbig country would destroy Bigfoot so would struve, brown, Rothwell, hunt, miocic, it doesnt matter my point is Cain got an easy fight at ufc 146

  19. rob reiner says:

cain didnt get hit in the chin, he got hit in the back of the ear by jds. just want to clarify, cant say he got a weak chin when the knockout was towards the back of the head. now cheik congo hit him in the chin but he pulled throught that!

  20. Joon says:

Throwing the kick was indeed a mistake, but an even bigger one was eating elbows like they were tic tacs while on the ground. No eating in the cage Bigfoot.

  21. David says:

He shouldnt have let himself get taken down and punched and elbowed then, the stupid fuck

  22. Nando says:

You lost. Bitching & making excuses isn’t gonna change anything.

  23. Mark Petrie says:

I’m sure bigfoot had trouble seeing with pools of his blood spewing everywhere – he’s absolutely right in that respect. It’s what happens when an elbow connects … He looked terrible, hardly worthy of of an elite status.

JDS has some great striking of course and perhaps decent take down def skills (I would argue it really hasn’t been tested). That said, Mir’s game plan was all wrong. He had major size advantage and he should have approached it like Coulture would – in tight, dirty box, knees, elbows, clinch, etc against the ropes. I think Cain has enough brains not to allow JDS space and try to trade jabs in the center of the ring. Cain will win – you heard it here.

  24. Leo From New Jersey says:

Bigfoot reasons are fair because you can clearly see him with his eyes closed wile cain was hitting him im sorry but this is why i don’t believe Cain truly won….LETS BE REAL CAIN HAS NO CHIN/ KONGO DROPPED HIM TWICE AND THAT WAS BACK AT 99 AND THE ONLY REASON HE EVEN GOT THE PT HE WAS AT WAS BECAUSE OF HIS SPEED ALL SPEED NO CHIN AND DOS SANTOS LANDS 1 PUNCH AND HE FALLS LIKE A BABY OUT A CRIB…..I TRULY BELIEVE YOUR ONLY AS GOOD AS YOUR CHIN AND CAIN DOES NOT HAVE ONE QUOTE ME!

  25. GET RID OF TRT says:

Got lucky my ass. Brazilians really loves to make excuses

  26. Leo From New Jersey says:

Bigfoot reasons are fair because you can clearly see him with his eyes closed wile cain was hitting him im sorry but this is why i don’t believe Cain truly won….LETS BE REAL CAIN HAS NO CHIN/ KONGO DROPPED HIM TWICE AND THAT WAS BACK AT 99 AND THE ONLY REASON HE EVEN GOT THE PT HE WAS AT WAS BECAUSE OF HIS SPEED ALL SPEED NO CHIN AND DOS SANTOS LANDS 1 PUNCH AND HE FALLS LIKE A BABY OUT A CRIB…..I TRULY BELIEVE YOUR ONLY AS GOOD AS YOUR CHIN AND CAIN DOES NOT HAVE ONE QUOTE ME!!

  27. Migz says:

@maurice- cain will destroy JDS in the rematch. He won’t stand with JDS he will do the same thing he did to Big Foot Take him down and Beat the piss out of him. Cain had the wrong gameplan in their first bout. JDS is one dimensional and that will bite him in the ass. Cain wins the rematch.

    • BowtieAssassin says:

Lol, JDS isn’t getting ankle picked, the guy has proven to have the best TDD in the game, Cain will have to strike for Atleast the whole first round and will get knocked out again, then he can beat another fringe top 10 guy setting up a third knockout.

I would be vary interested in Cormier vs JDS however.

  28. JChrisC says:

The cut was from getting hit, He made Big Foot bleed so he won the fight. Its that simple.

  29. Leo From New Jersey says:

@migz but cain does not have a chin and i guarentee he won’t take him down ! cain is all hype with no chin i called the k,o in the first fight cause jds is the first guy whos hands are faster then his and cain throws in the pocket jds is in and out example. the first 2 punches jds landed in the fight cain was seconds off with a return jds threw the left hook and cain 1-2 combo was way off 2 dif styles jds is in and out cain throws in the pocket i really dont believe cain has a chance! and im not bias i believe jds can be defeated but no way in hell itll be against no chin VELASQUEZ

    • Spydr says:

Really? Cain took a good shot to the back of the ear. And you say he has (NO) chin? Lol that fight is his only loss. Now Kongo got Cain twice on the chin an what happen? Oh that’s right. He got back up and won the fight! And didn’t he land like over a hundred or something punches to kongos dome? Cain can beat jr…

    • HBCsniper says:

Hey Leo from New Jersey…shut the fuck up, you don’t know shit!!

  30. Edd says:

If you wouldn’t have beaten me into a bloody pulp I would have beaten your ass.

  31. feenom says:

Weak…take it like a man. If he had gotten knocked out he would’ve had an excuse for that

  32. saxs says:

well duh the blood affected him but why was he bleeding cuz he was getting elbowed and beat up he lost take the L cain was hungry that night

  33. Artstunna says:

Big foot you are the biggest fucking crying baby,if you dont wan blood in your eyes don’t get hit period, you just got outclass and that is it.

  34. Matt Nelson says:

    You got your ass beat….

  35. bdizz says:

na you just got your ass handed to you that’s it.

  36. BigFootSilva says:

Duhh,,uuhhh I got my ass kicked and blood got in my eyes no fairrrrr uuhhhhhh Punches and elbows feel bad….hurt Antonio duhh..

  37. flip says:

This guy is always talking down his loses. If he stood with cain he would have gotten rocked. Solid fighter if he fought smarter consistently, but nobody wants to hear him give his opponent little respect.

  38. Sick Brah says:

I did wonder how much of it was blood and how hurt he actually was. that guys head looks solid and didn’t Cain break his hand?

I was more worried about Cain punching himself out, cos Bigfoots head looks like a rock.

Either way, don’t bloody say that Cain got lucky, don’t try and kick someone with that level of wrestling….

  39. DMAC says:

I just re watched the fight even though he probably did have blood in his eye Cain still had him in a every dominate position and IMO probably would’ve finished either way. Big Foot looked mad prepared for this fight he’s probably taking the loss hard and isn’t scared to voice his opinion. He’s a great addition to the HW division and losing to Cain isn’t going to knock him too far down the latter.

  40. jay808 says:

cain whipped his ass, plain and simple. you win some, and you lose some.

  41. The_Gooch1 says:

And what’s the reason why he couldn’t see? Yeah it was Cain. It’s not like he walked in the octagon blind. Bigfoot got his ass whipped.

  42. Gota says:

Im kind of getting tired of all of these professional athletes, not just fighters, making excuses. I’ve got news for you- You are never going to be 100%! I played college baseball, I can never say that I didn’t have some sort of pain when I played in fifteen years. Quit making excuses. As a fighter, you’re supposed to be able to take the pain and rise above

  43. AJ says:

Does this guy normally pull a sonnen or is this just a one time thing? I don’t get it, he got beat – not because there was blood in his eyes. He made it apparent to anyone watching the fight that he was going to use the blood in his eyes as an excuse for why he lost. The real reasons he lost the fight are: he didn’t block the elbow, he didn’t prevent the take down and he went from the uncontrolled kick that was caught. The UFC’s starting to get a little too populated with these delusional fighters with managers and an ‘inner circle’ that’s unwilling to tell them the truth.

  44. MMA_122 says:

All these Brazillians tend to make excuses a lot and get upset when they get dominated by anybody without a black belt
