UFC 163 Results: Phil Davis Upsets Lyoto Machida in Controversial Stunner

The co-main event was a light-heavyweight tilt with potential title ramifications as Lyoto Machida took on Phil Davis

A measured first round saw Machida looking to counter Davis. Machida landed successfully with his usual blinding speed. Davis didn’t look for a takedown for the majority of the round. Whenever Machida would land, even a minor shot, he would berserk on Phil and look to finish. Machida took the stand up in the first although he was taken down late in the round after throwing a punch behind Davis’ head as Davis came forward.

Davis loosened up in the second round on his feet. Davis changed up his strikes and looked to stifle Machida who was looking for a way to get in on Davis. Davis broke up his strikes and lured Machida in, countering him and forcing him to look for new angles, all while Davis was already setting up new combinations after side-stepping out-of-the-way. This round ended the same as the first with Davis on top after a scramble, working the body of Machida.

The third saw Davis coming in to a countering Lyoto Machida. Machida landed the majority of the significant strikes in this one. As for the takedowns of Davis, they didn’t show up in this round. Machida stuffed every attempt with a scurry, never letting his back hit the cage. Machida always seemed to land when it counted while Davis had limited success with his striking, never rocking Machida or even making him think twice about coming forward.

In the end, Machida had a decision taken out from under him after a fight that he seemed to do some notable damage in. Davis, although much improved and aggressive, did little to Machida and could only land two takedowns in a fight where he attempt upwards of ten total. Either way, hopefully Davis can make the most of this opportunity that was gifted to him and continue his climb up the ladder.

Official Decision Phil Davis defeats Lyoto Machida via Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

Another boring Machida fight…. Hopefully, he will go away now. Maybe the WSOF.. The UFC should cut him.

  2. Fagoyle Wrestling says:

then go watch wrestling you faggot

    • Gargoyle Wrestling says:

      Thanks, I think I will homo…aaaaagain. lmao.

      • korean zombie says:

Your an absolute Fuckwit gargoyle wrestling stick to wwe and tna

      • Again.. says:

???? Did you really think Phil Davis won that fight? You are a complete and utter idiot. It was close, but Machida did enough to win. I think you like seeing to guys lay on top of eachother finger popping eachother’s assholes cuz thats what wrestling is you queer!

        • Gargoyle Wrestling says:

AAAAAgain…..Yes it was close and they both sucked but Machida sucked worse. That guy is an expert at running away from a fight. He didn’t win. He should have dominated Davis and he didn’t NOBODY and I Mean NOBODY(unless you are a homo retard) wants to see Machida as champion or even fight for the chance. He is a stepping stone and gatekeeper now. A low PPV one.
Now what’s this finger stuff weirdo. Is that form your sick diseased mind or form personal experience or both? Who thinks that shit unless you are a weed smoking druggie loser weakling homo?? Is that what you are aaaaagain?? lol

  3. Dee Snutts says:

IMO both Machida AND Davis were really the ones who “blew” this fight, not the judges.. But mainly Machida, bc it was his fight to dominate and finish, but he did the same crap when Dana gave him a shot to “show” that he wants the belt and can win it.. Thats why the Hendo v Machida “title eliminator” turned Machida into the temporary (well maybe now permanent) “tower guard”/stepping block for the belt or a top 5 rank.. And as for Davis, he gets to move up in line, but HAS TO finish the next top 5’r in dramatic fashion to prove he’s there to stay.. Just sucks because they both had the skills to do that last night, but decided not to pull the trigger and play the “edge one out” game (and Machida relying on the Brazil factor way too much)… And I am sorry, but if you have the undeniable look on your face of you not really knowing which way its gonna go when the decision is being read.. Then don’t go around complaining about it like you “knew” you won. You already made the mistake of not solidifying your spot as the next person to fight for the belt by not DOMINATING or ending the fight in a dramatic fashion like a No 1 contender is suppose to do.. FOR A SECOND TIME!!!

Now either way Machida is gonna have to knock out one or two more AT LEAST, when he could be sitting in line right now saying “I think I should be next” and could be having the Hendo fight behind him, instead of REPEATING IT (except minus the mini marathon he did in that fight with Dan)..

    • Dee says:

It’s not that easy. Lyoto landed some pretty hard shots on Davis. Davis was the one running. I don’t expect Lyoto to run and get knocked out. It’s just not that easy. THAT WHOLE TERM DON’T LEAVE IT UP TO THE JUDGES DOESN’T APPLY TO EVERY SITUATION. Phil Davis face at the end of the 3rd told who really won the fight. He was bleeding from the mouth, with his mouth open looking bewildered. He loss. And if it went 1 more round he probably would have been stopped.

  4. Sasquatch says:

    Judging at it’s finest… pathetic!

  5. Dee says:

Phil was the one he ran.

  6. Jack says:

I don’t agree with decision, but I understand it. You have to win two out of three rounds. Two rounds ended with Davis on top of Machida, and Machida not appearing to have any answer for it. Machida and his corner should have both realized there is every possibility that he was losing the fight. He should have been much more aggressive in looking for a knockout than he was. Hoping for a counter-strike knockout or a point-fighting decision is a dangerous strategy, which he should have realized with a split decision victory over Dan Henderson and a split decision loss to Rampage. The decision shouldn’t really surprise anyone. We’ve seen lots of fights that were won by a few takedowns that accomplished nothing. Judging in MMA is horrible.

  7. punchkick says:

dana white screwing lyoto again lol, on the side note; davis vs belfort?

  8. 123 says:

jimi manuwa would beat most of theese boring lightheavyweights

  9. The Way Of The Dutchman says:

    Horrible decision

  10. Gargoyle Wrestling says:

Ok, I re-watched this fight a few times and I could see where the Machida nutlickers think he won. But then I looked at it closer again round by round. In round 1, Machida didn’t do shit. His only little flurry actually had ZERO of his strikes landing. Phil chased him around and dumped him on his ass. Davis wins. Round 2, once again Machida runs away and Phil dumps him on his ass. Davis wins. Round 3, Machida aaaagain runs away and Phil chases him around. Few more flurries, maybe Machida wins, but I give Phil that round too. Nachida running away is defensive and the guy chasing is offensive, thus winning. Davis 30-27. Don’t see how one Judge could give Machida round 1, Horrible decision. Can see where they gave Machida round 3 even though I have Phil winning that too.
Bottom Line, just another typical boring Machida fight that he didn’t luck out on like he did against Hendo. Machida is now an after thought. Davis needs more offense, don’t think this advanced him much.

    • Sasquatch says:

Wow do our opinions differ on this one.. your bias towards American wrestlers is blatantly obvious, so much so there’s not much point wasting time debating with you.

      • Gargoyle Wrestling says:

Hell yah I have bias, because wrestling is offensive and controls the tempo of a fight. It’s the reason there is MMA. You think Ultimate Striking would be popular? lol, All Machida did is defend takedowns in the 3rd, That is defensive and Davis was the aggressor trying to get him down, therefore the winner. People who argue that defending a takedown is winning is fukcin crazy and doesn’t know shit. It’s like saying, I dodged those punches and kicks, therefore, I am winning!!! No, you are playing defense to the striker and are losing. Sheesh does anybody have any experience in fighting??

  11. maddkillah says:

ever have that feeling when you feel excited about something because you thought it was something significant and then it turned out to be sh*t? that’s how i describe his fight just like the recent rory vs jake fight.
none of them didn’t really land something damaging. machida clearly has an advantage on the striking dept but didn’t commit. i also believe that davis is more than capable of taking machida down but didn’t do it more often.
my conclusion is, “the fight is boring”

  12. The Way Of The Dutchman says:

I have no idea which fight people who think that Davis was ‘chasing’ Machida were watching. Machida was moving forward and Davis was backing up.
Machida could have done a bit more, but he was careful not to let Davis do his usual takedown followed by boring lay n pray ‘control’ tactics.
Davis did absolutley nothing apart from two late takedowns followed by nothing substantial.
It’s a disgrace, Athletic Commissions have to start appointing judges who actualy know what they are watching, or demand from the judges they educate themselves.

    • Sasquatch says:

Judging is no doubt the biggest issue with MMA today. I don’t know what the requirements are to be a judge these days but it’s very apparent the Athletic Commissions need to review and change them. Disgrace is an understatement!

      • The Way Of The Dutchman says:

Exactly! Some fights I see scorecards of 30-27, 30-27 and 27-30. I just can’t understand how a supposedly well educated fight judge can score the absolute opposite from the other two. Sometimes it’s like they watched a completely different fight.
Something needs to be done because really, judging isn’t that difficult. But these morons keep messing up that one simple task.

        • Gargoyle Wrestling says:

You two are a few of the posters I actually read and I’ll I can say is you both are crying like little babies here…Whaaaaa the judges suck,,, whaaa,,,this is horrible when your guy loses. What about the judging in the Hendo fight? Face it, Machida sucks and he avoids fighting. He is boring and the judges know that. I’ve played baseball my whole life and even in Triple A the umpires suck at tmes, but guess what they are pretty good too MOST of the time, just like MMA. So get off of it and actually learn what fighting is, then you will realize a herky jerky unbalanced avoid a fight Machida is losing most of the time. When you run from a fight, you are losing!!! Boxers are not winning when they are blocking punches. Sheesh…

        • The Way Of The Dutchman says:

Did you watch? You can’t have watched the fight if you keep claiming that Davis was the offensive fighter, cause that is complete bullcrap. Machida was the one moving forward, not Davis.

  13. ThaGreenBandit says:

  14. Ddddddddd says:

As big of a fan of Machida as I am,he should have had a finish. He knows what happens with a minimal amount of damage in a point for point match. This fight was a dud and that’s why he lost. I could enjoy fights like this if good judging followed but instead it just creates frustration and anxiety.
This win is a curse for Phil just like his fighting style. Lyotos’
loss will just make most people clamor for his next win.
It will be interesting to see who they match with both of these guys and how they handle their next fight.

  15. JiuJitsuHeyZues says:

You know, I couldnt think of a worse fight for people to argue over or be contraversial LOL what a waste of your lives. But Ill take a moment to educate you, because I am cool like that. So Look here all you keyboard warriors. Its no secret that the judging system is horrible at best blah blah whatever. But, if it is anything it is consistent, and it was here. They were both Running at times (Most of the time). They both made some half assed attempts to fight as well, the difference is the effectivness of those attempts. Had Machida rocked Davis maybe and jumped on him in the 3rd that may have been enough to win, by split decision or maybe a draw. But Davis finished rds 1 and 2 with take downs and had machida controled and on his back to finis the rounds. So even IF you give the 3rd round to Machida where he was good at defending takedowns (WHOOPEEE F**KIN DOO) Based on that you would still have to have it 29-28 Davis and therefore a unanimous decision. Get the hell over it!! Neither of them will get to Jones anyway. I am pulling for a Mauler upset anyway 😉

  16. Sean says:

Am I the only one that thinks all #1 contender fights should be 5 rounds? Another 10 minutes would produce a lot of benefits not the least of which is more accurate results and more fight time for the fans.

  17. GRT 3000 says:

That fight was fuckin boring, but nonetheless, Machida did edge out the V imo.
