UFC 162 RESULTS: Tim Kennedy Nabs Unanimous Decision Victory Over Roger Gracie

By JAKE CHASTAIN

| First of all, Roger Gracie looked like he was a weight class above Kennedy and I was assuming he would use it in his striking. Instead, he used it to get his takedown, easily I might add, in the first round. Luckily, Kennedy was able to stay composed on the ground and get back to his feet without even having to defend against a submission attempt. But Gracie was relentless with the takedowns and scored a second body-lock trip moments later. He smoothly transitioned to the back of of Kennedy and sunk in a lanky body-triangle. Much to my surprise Kennedy was able to spin out of the body-triangle and end the round on top of Gracie. It was a great first round and Gracie surely won the round with his grappling.

My mind was blow in the second round when Kennedy went for a takedown and landed it. He ferociously turned up the pace and started landing huge shots from the top. Each time Gracie tried to reverse or sweep Kennedy Tim was able to cleverly defend. The fight eventually came back up and the two worked in the clinch for a little while. Kennedy again tripped Gracie late in the round and ended the round with two takedowns.

I had the fight scored 1 round a piece heading into the third but it seemed like Roger Graice was extremely tired or hurt. Not much happened in the beginning of the round as Kennedy just kept Gracie at bay with several leg kicks and jabs. Nothing big landed and then Gracie tried to get a takedown. I was very surprised that Gracie didn’t throw many strikes in the round considering I thought the fight was still up in the air. But Kennedy kept the pace on Gracie and stole the round with octagon control and aggressiveness.

Kennedy landed 126 total strikes, compared to Gracie’s 16, and Tim scored 2 takedowns in the bout , one less than Roger. It wasn’t a super exciting fight but Kennedy impressed me on the ground and matched Gracie’s grappling. It was a clean-cut decision victory for Kennedy and now he has a win over a Gracie on his resume.

Kennedy went out and took care of business, earning himself his first UFC victory in his organizational debut. Like I said, it wasn’t extremely explosive, but Tim Kennedy went out and nabbed himself a big “W”. It will be very interesting to see what kind of talent the UFC decides to feed Kennedy next.
