UFC 162: Frankie Edgar looks to get over ‘bump in the road’ with win over Charles Oliveira

Former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar is currently on a three fight losing streak, for some fighters they would be in danger of being cut, however his three losses have come by close decision to 2 of the top pound for pound fighters in the world Ben Henderson (twice), and to Jose Aldo.

Putting those decision losses in his rear-view mirror, “The Answer” will next step inside the Octagon on July 6, 2013 to face Charles Oliveira at UFC 162 in Las Vegas, Nevada. And with a win over the jiu-jitsu black belt in “Sin City,” Edgar hopes to get over the “bump in the road” on his way back to the top.

He talked to bleacher report about the upcoming fight:

“I just need to get back to my winning ways. I need to get back into a rhythm I guess you could say. It’s tough because I have three losses. Yeah, they were three pretty tight losses, and some people say I won some of those fights, but it doesn’t matter. At the end of the day I lost. At the same time, those losses came against some of the best fighters in the world. It sucks having three losses in a row, but I have to play it for what it is. I don’t think I had any bad performances in that run. There are some things I need to work on technically and strategically, but I feel like I’m still on my way up. This is just a bump in the road, and I’m going to get back on track. This fight is my opportunity to get that done and get back into the win column.”

Edgar will get that opportunity to ‘get back on track’ when he takes on Charles “Do Bronx” Oliveira, who is coming off a loss of his own against the red hot Cub Swanson. Each man is in need of a victory, but one would have to think that the former champ has a good shot of getting the win and moving back toward title contention. The flip side to that is a fourth straight loss may spell the end of relevancy for a fighter once considered pound for pound one of the best.

  1. 757 says:

Amen FE you are an awesome fighter, tons of heart and will get back in it.

  2. magoo says:

    +1 Frankie’s a stud!

  3. The Way Of The Dutchman says:

He sure knows how to take a beating.

  4. "He's got HEART! He's so QUICK!" says:

But can he fight? Not really. He moves so fast that his opponents have a difficult time hitting him. And it tires them out. That’s why Edgar could hang in the LW division: because he’s faster than most in that division. Not a better fighter. No one says he can punch. No one says he can wrestle. No one says he has great jiu jitsu. All you hear is that Edgar has “heart” and “quickness” and “never gives up.” P4P? In what, track? Edgar is already irrelevant.

    • Rodriguez says:

Possibly the most stupid comment I have ever seen. So the guy who won the LW title, who beat B.J. and Sherk doesn’t know how to fight? Have you ever been in a fight? Last I checked using speed and quickness is part of a fight! Unless you always fight slow fat asses who can’t move. Frankie may not be the best at everything, but knowing how to use his athletic ability to improve his wrestling and boxing is a talent all in its own.

  5. 757 says:

Wow ^^Can he fight? wtf what a fucking stupid ass moronic question and statement. On top of that the Dutchman makes a comment about taking a beating. You idiot now I know you just started watching. FE has a list of great fighters that he has fought and beat….even one he beat twice and got jacked out of. Anyway you need to not comment anymore . You are way to stupid and take this other goof^^with you.

    • What is 757? Your weight? says:

First of all you, if it is your weight, time to get out of the house and away from those Cheetos and Pepsi! Go enjoy the sun!
And, dummy, my statement challenged all Edgar fans (which YOU are one) to finish this statement: “My favorite fighter, Frank Edgar, is great at _________________ and fill in the blank! Did you with your fckn mental comments say anything about Edgar? No. Because you’d be ridiculed by all others if you said “punching power” or “jiu jitsu” or “wrestling.” But if you say “stamina” and “cardio” and “movement” and “heart,” well that’s what everyone says. And people say that about many athletes in other sports. But this is MMA. What is he great at? LeBron is a complete basketball player. Jeter is Mr. Yankee. Manning (you choose which one) is a great quarterback. Edgar? He has great heart???? P4P? Not even close. Come back with some meaning, you fckn idiot, then gain some respect. Otherwise, continue to be you.

    • And if you're referring to Bendo beating Edgar Twice says:

Henderson beat Edgar in Japan legitimately. I know the asses of Edgar fans are still in pain about that one. But Edgar didn’t beat the Champ on the rematch: you may have judged him to win, fine. But that was justice being served for the Abu Dhabi fight when Edgar initially was given the belt! He didn’t beat Penn that night, he outran Penn. BJ outstruck Edgar and should’ve retained his belt so that we wouldn’t have to go through two years of Edgar’s champion facade. Edgar is irrelevant. Sorry.

      • Ddddddd says:

I’m not gonna debate if a fighters good or not but I think Frankie’s an amazing talent. He was runnin sweet foot work before a lot of other fighters even considered it. Frankie’s a standout wrestler if you don’t believe me you don’t anything about him. His striking is precise and powerful enough to knock out a guy that’s so goddamn tough he knocked himself out. Frankie’s got a great chin excellent takedown defense and yes cardio and heart that is immeasurable. What do you expect out of a fighter to make them great that’s what I want to know.

        • It's Difficult To Debate says:

when you have no statements to back what you believe. “Amazing talent.” Why? “Powerful striking.” Example? “Takedown defense.” Yes he does. Due to quickness.
Great fighter? Let’s stick with the champions. Cain? Standup against Big Nog. TDD against Brock. Bones? Standup and gnp against ALL his opponents. Anderson? If you don’t know, I am wasting my time. GSP? Best wrestling in MMA. Decent GNP vs all his opponents. Bendo? Strong as a horse.
Great standup, no slouch off his back. Stays in the pocket. Rousey? You know what’s coming and still can’t stop it!!
Edgar? Great heart, quick, cardio for days. What else? Powerful punching? Referring to the 3rd Maynard fight? please. Maynard fought the worst fight two times in a row. He was on fumes by the beginning of the 4th round.
Loyalty is one thing. But saying Edgar is one of the P4P best fighters is ridiculous.

  6. The natural says:

This will be Edgar’s test if he truly is a legend and can become an icon with a run at a title again. This time he’s actually a known fighter. This run will make or break his legacy. I def c him underestimating these other fighters. And getting caught but best of luck.

  7. 757 says:

What is your weight 757 ..You are a joke . You know nothing about the sport and you don’t even have the balls to make this comment under the regular name that you use. You have to change it up for some goofy reason….Nice stab at a comment to try and shut me down but you made yourself look stupid….nice one weiner. I will be myself and will continue to know way more than you about the sport…now if this was xbox or waxing your carrot then for sure your the champ…fool

  8. 757 says:

Also o the asshole who calls himself what is your weight 757….Punching power knocked your boy Maynard out and dumped Henderson on his ass several time. Go back and watch some FE fights asshole and see how many people he has submitted. Last go check out his collegiate wrestling record (All American) and let me know how that works for you. Couple all of that with his heart, stamina etc and that’s how he became champ…oh yeah whipped BJ’S ass twice too…You fuck up do some research asshole.
