UFC 161 RESULTS: “Suga” Rashad Evans Squeaks Out Split Decision Victory Over Dan Henderson in Exciting Battle
| What a scrap! This was definitely worth a main-event booking! There was a lot riding on this fight and these two competitors fought like it. The fans should have been thoroughly pleased with this bout!
The first round was a back and forth battle that saw both men gain success in their striking but nothing huge landed. Hendo hit a couple of nice uppercuts and some overhands but the big strike came with about a minute left when he landed a straight left that rocked and droped Evans. Evans recovered and the round ended with the two dancing in front of each other but I thin Henderson won the round with the big strike and the couple strikes he landed following that. I also noted, although he was dropped, Rashad looked very quick and landed some good strikes in the first. However, I still think Henderson stole the round with the straight that rocked Evans.
Rashad came out using his wrestling to start the second round. He tried to take Hendo down but was unsuccessful and when they broke from the clinch they both landed nice shots! Both men again saw success in their striking and this round was very close. What stood out to me in the second round was that Rashad is not going to take Henderson down. Dan stuffed three takedowns and made Rashad pay for each shot he attempted. This was a very close round to score and could have gone either way.
Evans came out in the third with a killer’s intent. He rocked Dan early in the round with some really big shots and his speed was beginning to stifle Henderson’s attack. Rashad was slowly taking over the pace of the fight and landed some great combos while pressing Henderson against the cage. Henderson was starting to fade and Rashad only increased the pace, controlled the clinch and poured on everything he had. The fight ended with both men swinging and the horn sounded and closed out an amazing fight between two warriors.
Rashad narrowly out-struck Henderson 49-47 in total strikes landed and squeaked out a razor thin split-decision victory over Dan Henderson.
Rashad Evans Wins via Split-Decision Victory
This was a great showing for both men and a great fight for the fans. This is a tough loss for Henderson (his second decision loss in a row) but will likely still get a top contender in his next fight. Rashad is likely back in the 205 title hunt and will get another top contender in his next bout. To see if the UFC announces anything breaking at the press conference click here.
