‘TUF 19: Penn vs. Edgar’ Episode 8 Recap – Penn Wins Coaches Challenge
Tonight on Fox Sports 1, ‘The Ultimate Fighter Season 19: Penn vs. Edgar’ returned with another action packed episode.
If you missed it, here’s a recap:
We start at the fighter house where team Penn’s Mike King is upset at Team Edgar for not cleaning their dishes. He leaves a sternly worded note expressing his anger.
His opponent, Team Edgar’s Eddie Gordon, sees the note and decides to ignore it and let the Blue team take care of his dishes. Gordon talks about his history of playing college football, and how MMA has filled the athletic void in his post-college life. He recognizes the skills of the undefeated King, but believes that his striking will prove to be too much for him.
King discusses his past issues with alcohol and prison, but is thankful to his girlfriend for keeping him on the straight and narrow. His wrestling background led him to MMA, where he has found a large amount of success. King wants to strike with Gordon, but coaches B.J. Penn and Mark Coleman are insistent that his best route to victory is to use his wrestling.
Dana White brings the teams down to a river for the coaches challenge, which is a Kayak race.
The two coaches get off to a rough start, but Edgar eventually takes the lead. However, Penn is able to catch up and take a commanding lead, winning the challenge. With the win, Penn wins $10,000, and his team members each win $1,500.
Mike King vs Eddie Gordon:
The two look to trade early, but it’s Eddie Gordon who lands cleanly with multiple punches to both the head and the body. King looks to use his footwork and movement, but Gordon’s accuracy allows him to continue to land cleanly. King latches on to a Thai Clinch where he lands a few solid knees, but it’s Gordon who gets the better of the exchange, landing several punches over the top. King finally lands a hard overhand that briefly staggers Gordon, but Gordon quickly shakes it off and fires back. King decides to look to his wrestling, and controls Gordon against the cage for a bit. The two separate and begin to trade again, where King lands a solid combination that appears to wobble Gordon. However, Gordon recovers, and the round ends there.
Gordon looks to throw combinations early, and catches King with a clean jab. King lands a body kick, but Gordon counters with a stiff jab-cross combination. King lands some knees, and Herb Dean calls one foul. Gordon takes a few moments to recover, but quickly gets back into it. The two both land a few solid punches, and then King becomes the victim of a vicious eye-poke. King complains that he can’t see, and they bring the doctor in. However, the fight is able to continue without issue. King looks to shoot for a takedown, but Gordon sprawls and lands a hard knee in retaliation. King shoots again, but is again stuffed, and Gordon makes him pay with more punches. King gets a body lock and throws Gordon to the ground, but Gordon is quickly able to stand up. King walks forward and lands a hard elbow to the face of Gordon, and then immediately transitions into a shot. Gordon stuffs it for a while, but King gets the takedown with seconds left. Gordon latches on to a guillotine choke, but the round ends before it can get close.
Both fighters still appear to be fairly fresh and come out aggressively. Both land a few solid punches, and King shoots for a takedown. After a brief struggle Gordon is able to stuff the takedown, and the two return to the center of the cage, where they trade a few more punches. King shoots again, but Gordon latches onto a standing guillotine, which he uses to land several hard knees. King lands an accidental eye poke that causes a brief break in the action, but the two quickly begin to trade again. King shoots for another takedown, but Gordon scrambles and gets the takedown for himself. However, there is little control and the two fighters quickly return to their feet. King appears to be tiring, with his punches having little force behind them. King whiffs a big punch and falls down, but returns to his feet and lands a solid flying knee to end the round.
Eddie Gordon wins via unanimous decision
After the fight, White praises King for toughing out the fight with an injured eye (which looks quite gruesome afterwards), but didn’t enjoy the action in the fight as a whole. The next fight is announced, and it’s Team Penn’s Chris Fields vs Team Edgar’s Matt Van Buren, who engage in a heated stare-down before the show ends.
