Trainer: Machida Should Get Title Shot With Win Over Munoz

“I think if Lyoto wins he gets the title shot but also you have Jacare, he did a great job in his last fight. I think he deserves the opportunity to fight for the belt. It doesn’t matter who is the champion. In my opinion everybody wants the belt, everybody fights for the belt. It’s a dream for all fighters so all guys in the top five or top ten deserve the chance to fight for the belt. Jacare deserves it, Lyoto deserves it. Mark works so hard, he deserves all the best also. So if guys have to fight, let’s fight.”

Famed Brazilian trainer and Lyoto Machida cornerman, Rafael Cordeiro, believes that Lyoto should be granted a title shot if he defeats Mark Munoz later this month.

Machida steps in against Munoz after Michael Bisping was forced out of the fight due to injury. The two will face off at UFC Fight Night 30 on Oct. 26, 2013 from Phones 4u Arena in Manchester, England.

  1. Big daddy says:

It’s a good thing machida doesn’t pay him to think

  2. mean170 says:

Is he assuming that Weidman is going to beat Anderson again? Or are the teammates going to fight each other? If Machida looks as good at 185 as he did at 205 I feel bad for the rest of the division. I don’t see anyone taking him down and outside of Anderson I don’t really see anyone landing a decent punch on him.

    • UFC 84 Forever says:

Sounds like they don’t expect Anderson to win based on this. Jacare is also supposedly a training partner isn’t he? So in the end Machida is looking out for #1 in the end I guess? Either way, excited to see him at 185 – wonder how he’ll do.

  3. KIDD433 says:

It seems to me crossing paths with his teammates doesn’t bother him. According to Cordeiro.

  4. g says:

You must not have watched any of Machida’s fights since he was the champion because he certainly doesn’t look good in any of them except the Randy fight and thats because Randy is old and was overrated to begin with… 19-10 and the dude is one of the best ever? That spawned from the same logic as Glover Texeira being #2 LHW when he hasnt even beat a top 10 guy.

  5. GRT 3000 says:

Machida needs to engage in battle if he wants to be successful at 185′ that elusive style has become so elusive a fight never breaks out. I use to love Machida, but he’s been playing it safe for too long now.
