The Ultimate Fighter Live on FX Episode 3 Recap And Cast Reactions

Live episode 3 – “Old School vs New School” – aired Friday evening and saw Team Cruz take a 2-0 lead as number one overall pick – Justin Lawrence – knocked out Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu veteran Cristiano Marcello with a solid left hook at 3:16 of the second round.

With the win, Team Cruz selected the next fight, which will pit Myles Jury against Al Iaquinta on Episode 4, Friday, March 30 at 10 p.m. ET / PT on FX.

Here’s what everyone had to say about the evening’s live fight:

UFC President Dana White:
“Cruz’s first pick didn’t disappoint tonight. Lawrence fought a cautious but solid fight. Picked Marcello apart from the outside and landed big shots. Marcello literally had no offense whatsoever tonight and Lawrence put him away halfway through the second round. Lawrence came out with a knockout victory, no injuries and very much one of the top contenders for the TUF Live Finale.”

Justin Lawrence:
“First and foremost, I want to thank the man upstairs. With that said, Dominick, Eric, Phil, Shannon, Lloyd, Doug, Wilson and the entire team, I just want to say thank you for the game planning that you came up with for me. I want to thank my mom and dad back home in Missouri, and all my family and friends, thank you so much.”

Lawrence’s Coach Dominick Cruz:
“I think again Faber underestimated the way we coach and the way that we fight. Regardless of what he says or thinks about himself, he’s a cocky dude. It’s worked out so far for our team. It’s about confidence in my team, about how good they are, and about how good they listen. I’ve got a good team. Lawrence fought a perfect fight; he listened to the game plan perfectly, there’s nothing I can say, everything was perfect.”

Cristiano Marcello:
“I want to say sorry to my family, and everybody who supports me. This is just one more step for something big.”

Marcello’s Coach Urijah Faber:
“First off, it was a great fight. I’m really proud of Marcello. It’s only two weeks we’ve been able to be part of these guys’ lives & implement what we can. But one thing you can’t teach with Marcello is his heart. Maybe Lawrence and Vick can teach Dominick how to finish a fight.”

Next week’s fighter Al Iaquinta:
“Got called out tonight; not the first time, probably won’t be the last – and I got my ass kicked early that time, then won the fight. Jury’s never been in a war like I have.”

Next week’s fighter Myles Jury:
“I feel great, I’ve been waiting for this opportunity my whole life. Al’s a tough opponent, and it will be the toughest fight of my career.”

I have been seeing more and more people getting off the “California Kid” bandwagon now that they see what type of person Cruz really is. He’s a humble champ, and a good coach. The reason most people hated him before was because Faber has been the UFC poster boy for the WEC merger.

Thank God people are starting to come around to Cruz. I have been a fan of him since the WEC, and knew he would be champ one day. I used to be a fan of Faber, but then I started to see how cocky he was getting and letting the hype get to his head. He always talked s*** on Cruz, but Cruz always kept a cool head and never played those games. Then when Faber started to make parody / trash talking youtube vids about the champ, I realized that Faber was just jealous. If you look at Fabers youtube page, you will see all of these trash talking vids, and you will not find any from Cruz, except maybe in an interview to hype up the fight.

As this season goes on, I bet money that you will start seeing a lot more Cruz fans. The main reason people didn’t like Cruz was that he has stayed incognito, and out of the spotlight, so they just didn’t know what he was about. Now people can make their own opinion of Cruz, instead of just listening to what Faber says about him.

    • oh yeah says:

So maybe instead of boo’s, like the last fight between him and Faber (stupid fanboys). Now he’s probably going to get the well deserved cheering entrance a CHAMP should receive. Bc the kid is a beast and has the best footwork in the game.

      • not sure, HIV positive says:

Ive gotta say I was one of those people on fabers bandwagon when wec merged, and hated Cruz in their rematch. But ive come around after watching only two episodes of this season, Cruz is a beast and a fighter I styleistically look up to. Plus hes got respect and humility which it seems is becoming rare in the sport. Looking forward to the rubber match, but I hope Cruz can finish it this time.

        • GET RID OF FITCH (forever) says:

I think its funny how Cruz has beat all the TEAM ALPHA MIDGETS he has faced since being in UFC. Thats gotta just eat the shit out of Uriah FAVORTISM

  2. Ninja Oreo Dollop says:

I like Cruz but people hate him because he’s a decision fighter.

    • SmoothAssNigga says:

Yeah thats the problem, Im a fan of both but I’ve always liked Cruz more. May not be a finisher becaude of all those arm punches an not puttin his ass into it but I think he is more skilled than Faber is.

    • GET RID OF FITCH (forever) says:

Cruz might be a decision fighter but at least he’s not boring ass point-fighter like GSP whoi only fights not lose. Cruz can be up 4 rounds to zero and he still fights like he is the challenger who is losing

  3. Xaninho says:

I didn’t have an opinion on either of these two before. After seeing the first three episodes of TUF I have to say Cruz is more like my kind of people.

That move where he put Faber on the spot offering him to pick his fighter was awesome!

Faber acts like a spoiled child, could that be because he has the same height as a toddler?
