The Ultimate Fighter 16 Finale Live Play by Play

Sean McClure is providing play by play for tonight’s Ultimate Fighter 16 finale. The main event features Roy Nelson versus Matt Mitrione.

*** 9:52 PM Renato Laranja just called me and informed me that he has declared Roy Nelson the winner of the main event.

-Roy Nelson (17-7; #10 Heavyweight) vs. Matt Mitrione (5-1)

Round 1

Roy sporting a long braid and the trademark wild beard. This one could end quickly. Mitrione towers over Nelson. Here we go. Mitrione in south paw and looks to be looking for the KO and Roy is unloading when he can. Mitrione with a head kick and now Roy Nelson clinches him against the fence. Matt turns Roy against the cage and throws a few knees to the body. Standing elbow lands from Matt. Matt landing body kicks. Both men are trading big shots and Matt loses his mouthpiece. Big Country rocks Matt with an uppercut and drops him. Mitrione gets pummeled and Herb Dean steps in for the save.

-Colton Smith (5-1) vs. Mike Ricci (8-2)

Round 1

Lots of time between Barry’s fight and this one.

Colton Smith is for real wearing boxers. This one’s for a contract with the UFC. Touch of gloves. Colton gets a low single and Mike starts dropping elbows. Colton gets a body lock and presses Ricci against the cage. Smith gets Mike down, but Ricci is back up. Colton on Ricci’s back with one hook in from the standing position. Colton forces Mike to the ground and Colton gets both hooks in. Ricci defending well. Colton looking for a rear naked choke. Ricci scambles back up after almost getting caught in a choke. Colton attempting a single leg after a shot. Now Mike is pressed up against the cage by Colton in a body lock. Colton gut wrenches Ricci to the ground. Smith all over Ricci at the end of the round.

Round 2

The round starts off with a low blow by Colton and the ref misses it despite Ricci’s pained face. After a moment Colton gets Mike to the ground with a good takedown. Mike using butterfly guard and wall walks up against the cage. Colton is constantly trying to take Ricci’s back. Colton locks in a rear naked choke after flattening Ricci out, but Mike slips out. Colton takes him down again and Mike is taking deep breaths. Smith gets Mike’s back and is landing small shots looking for another choke. USA chants. Smith locks in a rear naked choke, but it doesn’t look solid. Smith lets go. Colton is constantly trying to secure a rear naked choke. Mike Ricci hits himself in the face? Round ends.

Round 3

Body kicks by Colton Smith and Mike is pressed against the cage by Colton once again. This is very reminiscent of a Randy Couture style fight. Colton gets Ricci’s back, he is locking in a neck crank before letting it go. Colton cannot get his arm underneath Mike’s chin and for a moment Colton has the mount before taking Ricci’s back again. Colton is relentless and will not let go of back control. Mike Ricci looks absolutely confused and exhausted. Colton looking for an arm triangle and transitions to a rear naked choke attempt. Ricci slips out and locks in his hooks, taking Colton’s back. Out of nowhere Ricci locks in an armbar and almost stole the fight. Colton on Ricci’s back again and he is swarming him as the round ends.

Colton Smith defeats Mike Ricci via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-26)

-Pat Barry (7-5) vs. Shane Del Rosario (11-1)

Round 1

Touch of gloves. Del Rosario leg kicks. Barry answers with a leg kick of his own. They tie up and trade body knees until Shane presses Pat against the fence. Shane Del Rosario can’t get Barry down. Pat continually pressing the pace and looking for a submission. Shane now kneeing Barry to the body against the cage. Rosario determined to get a takedown but nothing happening. They square up in the center. Barry lands a nasty leg kick and Del Rosario charges in for a takedown attempt. Shane gets Barry’s back and sinks one hook in before locking in a rear naked choke. Barry gets free and he tries to pull Shane off. Barry still in danger of getting submitted and now he reverses it and lands in side control. The round ends with Pat in side control.

Round 2

Touch of gloves. Shane trying to get inside and Barry rocks Shane with a sick left hand sending Del Rosario staggering before putting Shane’s lights out with a final flurry and a VICIOUS right hook.

** Ridiculous amounts of hype for Dos Santos vs. Velasquez 2

-Dustin Poirier (12-2) vs. Jonathan Brookins (13-5)

Round 1

Southpaw versus southpaw. Leg kick from Dustin and Brookins counters with hooks to the body. Brookins hurts Poirier pretty badly with a right hand. Dustin survives and secures a body lock to recover. They separate again and take the center. Brookins tags Dustin again and he eats a big right hand. Dustin lands a few standing elbows but nothing significant. Lots of clinching in this one. Brookins eats a big right hand from Poirier who attempts a front kick and almost gets taken down. Poirier chasing Brookins down. Dustin finding his range and he closes the distance to Brookins pressing him against the cage. Dustin pummels Brookins and Jonathan finds himself in a D’arce choke that he cannot escape.
