The 7 most intimidating MMA Fighters of All Time
BJPenn.com takes a look at the most intimidating fighters in MMA history. Some are current and some are from days gone by, but all deserve to be on this list.
7. Bob Sapp
It doesn’t matter that his record is terrible or he crumbles like a cookie when he gets hit nowadays. What matters about Sapp is that he looks like a giant muscle bound wrecking machine with bad intentions. Back in the days of PrideFC he was feared and rightfully so. At the opening of the bout he would bull rush someone and shortly after attempted to decapitate them with his huge meat hooks we call hands.
6. Mirko Cro Cop
Cro Cop may be a shell of his former self, but when he was in his prime it was literally like watching a tiger stalk its prey. His left leg was a bunker buster and would be the end of many fights and sometimes a trip to the hospital for his opponents. He was cold and usually said nothing in the lead up to the fight, which made him seem almost like a serial killer waiting to strike – only you knew death was coming.
5. Cain Velasquez
He’s the UFC Heavyweight Champion of the world, but more importantly he’s a large, scary looking guy. His yes always seem to be looking for his next opponent or victim depending on how you look at it. Cain is vicious in the Octagon and despite his smiles outside of the cage there is a monster inside. His beating of Junior Dos Santos in their rematch solidified him as the scariest heavyweight on the UFC’s current roster.
4. Chuck Liddell
Some may argue this point with me and that’s fine. Chuck looks like a biker dude that would win a drunken brawl in the parking lot that started by someone looking at him wrong. He had that Mohawk mullet or mohullet that looked kind of backwoods and you might have even heard banjos when he walked by. Chuck’s decimation of previous opponents might be what scared a person the most stepping in to the cage across from him. He had ridiculous punching power that shut Tito Ortiz up twice, put Randy Couture down two times, and did Babalu Sobral the same.
3. Wanderlei Silva
Even today Silva is scary. His staredowns are epicness in action. He stared in to your soul, ate it and spit it out even before the fight began. Rampage Jackson got flattened twice in such a way that one of those times he was planked outside of the ring apron on the ropes asleep. Silva possessed uncanny power, aggressiveness, and intensity.
2. Robbie Lawler
This is Robbie Lawler of now. This does not refer to the young kid who lost to Nick Diaz or fumbled through his first go round at middleweight. This is the Lawler that just obliterated Josh Koscheck and the one who would most definitely have a better showing against Diaz today. If you look at him from across the Octagon I bet it looks like something like a pit bull on a chain eyeing a steak. He has explosive striking and a killer instinct that cannot be taught and that is why he is second on this list.
1. Andrei Arlovski
Arlovski was ripped, hairy, and possessed devastating punching power. He had a mouthguard with fangs imprinted on them that made him look ferocious. He flattened people or beat them senseless until they were unrecognizable. His reign as UFC champion may not have been as impressive as some, but he was definitely the most terrifying thing that stood across the ring from anyone during that time.
There are so many more that could be included, but these are the ones that made my list.
