Tarec Saffiedine, the last man to hold the Strikeforce welterweight belt, is eager to make his debut for the Ultimate Fighting Championship. And he knows precisely who he wants to fight, calling out the winner of this week’s fight between Carlos Condit and Martin Kampmann.

Tarec Saffiedine is long overdue for his debut in the UFC. The former Strikeforce welterweight champion was set to fight Robbie Lawler earlier this year, but an injury forced the Belgian fighter out of that bout. As he is nearing the end of his recovery, Saffiedine is looking to make his entrance to the UFC’s 170-lb. division.
In an interview with MMAFighting.com, Saffiedine called for the winner of Wednesday’s UFC Fight Night 27 main event between Carlos Condit and Martin Kampmann.
“I’ll be watching this fight really closely on Wednesday between Carlos Condit and Martin Kampmann. I really like those fighters, both of them would be good fights for me. I’d like to fight the winner of that fight.
“They are both coming off losses, but I think Carlos looked good in those fights he lost,” Saffiedine continued, referring to Condit’s most recent fights to UFC champ, Georges St-Pierre, and Johny Hendricks. “Martin got knocked out against Johny Hendricks. It’s going to be a war, I’m looking forward to watch[ing] it.”
Assuming Tarec gets the fight he wants, the timing works out well. With his recovery progressing, he is looking to fight before the year is up.
“I’m hoping [to fight] later December, early January. If I start training in the end of September, give me three months and I can fight in December. But if my rehab needs a little more time, maybe January. December 28 at UFC 168 would be the best time for me. It’s been really, really frustrating. It makes me angrier, gives me more motivation for my next fight.”
With the hope of debuting against a top-10, or even a top-5, opponent, Saffiedine believes he is only a couple wins away from a shot at the UFC title.
“That’s the goal. I believe if I win [against] one of those guys,” he said about Condit and Kampmann, “it puts me maybe one or two fights away from the title. But obviously, I’m a fighter that doesn’t look past anyone. I take one fight at a time. But my ultimate goal is to fight for the title. That’s the reason I came to the U.S. I came here to fight and beat those names. That’s my plan, that’s why I left my country, my family and friends. I’m really, really hungry and I can’t wait to come back to training.”
From the sounds of things, whoever Tarec Saffiedine faces in his UFC debut, be it Carlos Condit, Martin Kampmann or some other opponent, they will be facing a very motivated and fired up Saffiedine.
