Takanori Gomi Replaces Danny Castillo At UFC 172
The Fireball Kid is back.
UFC officials announced on Tuesday that PRIDE veteran and fan favorite, Takanori Gomi, will be replacing Danny Castillo at next month’s UFC 172 event. Gomi will be facing Isaac Vallie-Flagg in the newly announced contest.
Castillo is not being taken off the card, however, as the UFC is deciding on his new opponent as we speak.
Gomi’s start to his UFC career didn’t exactly go as planned, but recently the “Fireball Kid” has found more success in the Octagon, racking up wins against Eiji Mitsuoka and Mac Danzig, before dropping a contested split-decision to Diego Sanchez. His last fight was a little over a year ago.
On the other side of the coin, Vallie-Flagg recently had an 11-0-1 run put on ice, as he lost a decision to Elias Silverio at UFC Fight Night 35 in January.
UFC 172 is headlined by light heavyweight champion Jon Jones defending his belt against No. 1 contender Glover Teixeira.
Here’s how the card is shaping up:
•Champ Jon Jones vs. Glover Teixeira

•Jake Ellenberger vs. Tarec Saffiedine
