Strikeforce Champ Melendez Wants Eddie Alvarez Thrown His Way | MMA NEWS

“Yeah, Eddie is someone that I have respected for a long time and I would definitely welcome that. But you know, as much as I try to get excited for these and try to make these things happen, right now, I am trying not to get involved in that. I really don’t have that much say. I just let the promoters do it and hey, the power of the media, maybe you guys can help me out with that and the fans can make demands. But someone like Eddie would definitely interest me and definitely would motivate me. It’s nothing I am going to try to push for or waist my time over, but anything would be cool. I am up for whomever right now. I want to stay busy and fight for my fans, fight for my team and fight for my family, so it doesn’t matter who, I will take whoever right now.”
In a recent interview with mmaweekly.com, the always in Strikeforce limbo, Gilbert Melendez discusses his thoughts on former Bellator lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez.
Currently Alvarez is the only top lightweight not signed to the ZUFFA banner, however that is likely to change in the very near future.
Check out what Gil had to say about a rematch with Josh Thomson and possible fight with fellow Strikeforce fighter Pat Healy on page 2.

On a fourth fight with Josh Thomson:
“I have no interest right now, you know what I mean? Everyone was like, ‘Let’s close the book on this,’ and we did. I won two out of three and it is what it is. People can be mad and people can say whatever, but it’s over in my book. I am looking for new things, you never know what happens in the future. Maybe it’s going to come around again, and if it does, so be it.”
On Pat Healy as his possible next contender:
“Pat (Healy) is a guy that is pretty deserving, it’s just hard to say that I am fighting a top ten guy. I think he’s a tough dude. The thing I like about him is that he is new blood. He is a different style and a different look for me and I get to work on different things and get to show skills in different areas. Just fighting new blood is exciting for me at this point. That would motivate me more than the last fight.”

It’s gotta suck to be Gilbert
This fight will never happen all those Bellator contracts allow Rebney to keepthese fighters hanging forever and I doubt he is going to let another one of his (ONLY) stars to be stolen away by UFC. rebney will beg Viacom to give him money to pay Alverez whatever he wants otherwise this will seal it that Bellator is just another feeder show for UFC. Nop look for Alverez to be stuck in Bellator for a long time to come. yes i pray I’m wrong but knowing how fricken arragant Rebney is no way in hell he is going to let Alervez go so soon after losing Lombard to the UFC
yeah he means he will fight everyone except thomson
yeah cuz they didn’t fight 3 times already
gilbert is a beast but he wud get treated in the ufc…. and alvarez is hot garbage
He still thinks he won that last fight lol
I don’t know about that… I’m thinking he knows he got handed a gift and doesn’t want to risk losing his “status” as one of the top LW’s… he knows a loss to Thomson would be devastating for his career.
True… It was a gift… It was the clear to every one… Who won…. Was massive booing
Damn Gil give that man another fight, no one wants to come to SF to fight you. That isn’t a org. big name fighters are trying to call home and i think you even know this so come on over to the big league and lets see the self proclaimed #1 LW in the world do work. I think he’d be a great addition to the LW or FW division, i’m sure Dirtbag White will match your salary if your really serious about stepping up in competition and i’m also sure you can get around that gimic contract some how also.
No, you’re incredibly uninformed. Gil is staying in SF based on the deal with Showrime. According to my understanding, moving Gil to the UFC would void SF tv deal
I highly doubt that Gil holds all the cards in the SF deal, but he is the poster boy so I can see that being the case.
DMACyou haven’t a clue do you. Do you really think for one second Gil wants to stay in strikefarce. He’s stuck via the contract he signed before Zuffa took over. Showtime has made it clear if the uFC strys to steal Gil they will cancel theri contract.
I think Alvarez has his sights set on the UFC but you can’t blame Gil for trying.
So… just so someone can clarify for me. The article says Melendez is the only top lightweight not under the ZUFFA banner. But ZUFFA owns Strikeforce as well. So, unless I’m mistaken, shouldn’t that read that he’s the only top lightweight not under the UFC banner….?
That would require the site to ‘waist’ time checking facts and/or spelling errors…Gilbert will probably be in the UFC before that ever happens.
I weep for BJPenn.com. I mean… we have the technology to pull things up on wikipedia in a matter of 12 seconds. It’s sad they can’t “waist” that time to double check things. Side note, I have no problem wasting my 12 seconds here durning my work day
Haha I weep for your mom
Alvarez hasn’t signed anything yet if I’m correct.
Alvarez would whoop that ass. You heard it here first.
i want gilbert in the UFC already so he can get his ass kicked and then go back to strickforce
I want Bob Sapp in the ufc I think he would ko overeem hahaha
Not… Lol…. Bob sapp couldn’t beat up anybody that wasnt150 lbs or more lighter than him…and even then it would be luck …. Good one….
Wow, go fight Thomson.
Eddie would smash on him
Go fight in the UFC then. Dumbass.
You cannot choose who you fight. from other orgs. Especially Bellator…
First of all Nate Diaz would beat gil Nate is the best fighter from the scrap pack he has beaten guys that gil would have no chance against you dont become the best by beating guys that would never get in the ufc and second of all gil had the chance to come to the ufc in 2010 but instead he signed a new 4 fight deal with strikeforce he knew there was no one to fight in strikeforce and took the deal anyway so dont feel bad for gil he made his own choice and now hes powting about it thats something that him and nick do really well is bitch and complain and cant except any responsability for his own choices and thats why Nate is and will be the best product of the scrap pack he is humble always pays respect to his team and he never bitches and complaines he mans up and does his job without bitching so gil can continue to bitch and wine and beat nobadys in strikeforce but when he does get to the ufc you will all see how good he is not cause when he fights a real top ten fighter for the first time he will be in for a rude awakaning. Whatch fights and make your own opinions dont just fallow the hype cause the hype disapears and real fighters will last and get better and not bitch and complain like Nate.
, this guy has fought b level fighters at best, IMO he wouldn’t last with UFC top 10 lw
