UFC 161 RESULTS : Stipe Miocic Impressively Upsets Roy Nelson in Unanimous Decision Victory
| The two big boys came out sluggin!
Stipe looked amazing on his feet! He was moving well, poking Roy with his jab and looked to be rising up the big stakes that this fight holds. He was moving out of the way of all of Nelson’s big punches and he even ate one of Roy’s big power punches and weathered the storm. He answered that by rocking Nelson twice in the opening frame before the horn sounded. His combinations were clean, accurate and powerful and he absolutely dominated the first round!
Big Country looked very tired and demoralized in between rounds and the start of the second round didn’t help his confidence as Stipe came out looking stellar with his straights and combos. Nelson started looking sloppy, slow, and flat-footed and Stipe just started to outclass the veteran in Big Country. Nelson did land a solid uppercut in the second round but Stipe quickly fired back with his own successful combination. He pressed the action for most of the round and looked like a seasoned veteran with great footwork, always moving away from Nelson’s power, and Roy didn’t have an answer for Miocic’s speed and technique.
Nelson’s face was looking battered in the third round and he continued to just eat the clean combinations from Miocic. Still, Nelson was game and moved forward, pressing the action in the closing round. He was chasing down Stipe and it seemed that Miocic had gone into coast-mode and was looking to ride out the third on his way to a decision victory. He took Roy down one time in the third but most of the round was Nelson chasing down Miocic, Miocic landing nice counter strikes and moving out of the way of Nelson’s overhands.
Stipe Miocic Wins via Unanimous Decision
This was an extremely impressive performance for the Croatian as he defeats a top 10 heavyweight in Roy Nelson. Many people considered Nelson to be a top contender in the UFC heavyweight division and this win over Roy now puts Miocic in the title talks as well. It will be interesting to see what the UFC decides to do next with Stipe…possibly a top 5 opponent? And it will also be interesting to see if Nelson and the UFC can comes to new terms and ink out a new deal following this, his last fight on his current contract.
