When everything was said and done with the UFC Fight Night 29: Maia vs. Shields weigh-in, all but one fighter made weight. That man, light heavyweight Thiago Silva, will now be fined, the UFC announced on Twitter.
In addition to losing 25% of his purse, the Brazilian fighter will be ineligible for any finish bonuses. These bonuses- Fight of the Night, Submission of the Night and KO of the Night- generally earn the winner an additional $50,000 for their efforts. In some cases, for example Silva’s own bout against Rafael Cavalcante in June, a fighter can win multiple awards. In that bout, both Cavalcante and Silva earned $50K for Fight of the Night, but Silva walked away with an additional $50K for the Knockout of the Night.

Silva initially weighed in at 208 lbs., slightly over the 205 limit with its allowance of one pound. He was given an hour to shed the last two pounds, but he was unable.
Silva now has a lot of pressure on him to perform well at tomorrow night’s event. In his past seven fights, he has earned a 2-3 record with two No Contests. These No Contests were given when Silva was caught giving a fake urine sample for his drug test for one fight, and for a positive test for marijuana in the other.
With UFC President Dana White notoriously unforgiving regarding fighters who don’t make weight, Silva is on very thin ice to not only fight well, but to pass all required tests before and after the fight. He does have momentum on his side, however, as his last fight demonstrated that Silva still possesses the power and aggression that brought him fame inside the Octagon.
Silva and Hamill will fight on the main card of UFC Fight Night 29: Maia vs. Shields which airs live from Sao Paulo, Brazil Wednesday night at 7pm/4pm ETPT on FOX Sports 1. Preliminary bouts will precede the main card beginning at 5pm/2pm ETPT, and they will air on the same network.
