Shooto Announces Man vs. Woman Fight in Brazil
Andre Pederneiras (pictured, blue), head of team Nova Uniao (think training ground for UFC champions Renan Barao and Jose Aldo) has announced plans for a co-ed fight to take place at Shooto 45 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil this upcoming Friday, December 20th. The two fighters involved are
Juliana Velasquez (0-0) fighting from Team Nogueira, and Nova Uniao’s Emerson Falcao (0-1). When the story dropped via the website of Shooto’s broadcast partner, Pederneiras had not specified the exact rule set that two would be fighting under.
“But we guarantee that everything will be done within the law and safely,” he told Combate.com.
However, a rep for the Brazilian Athletic Commission (CABMMA) has mentioned that this event could scrap plans to put Shooto under the commission’s umbrella, as they had already scrapped a December 27th booking.
“If Andre is really putting that fight together, and if it’s in his plans to work together next year, for sure it won’t happen,” stated CABMMA Director of Operations Cristiano Sampaio. However, Sampaio did also state that they do not have the authority to stop the event.
As for the two fighters, Team Nogueira representative Pedro Marques responded: “Juliana (accepted) that fight with our coach staff. She really is in another level, and now is the best time to send that message, so we expect her to prove a point in the event. She has been training with men before, and it will not be new for her.”
With Falcao, a current reports are saying that he may be injured as off Monday and unable to accept the fight. More updates on his condition and this match will be posted.
