Shogun Wants PRIDE Rules, Believes Elbows Worse Than Soccer Kicks

“For sure, the new rules hinder me. I think that the rule set from when I fought in Japan was safer than today’s rules. Elbows hurt a lot more than stomps. I had adapted to their rules. So when I came to the UFC, to get comfortable, it took some time. And, truthfully, my fight style relied greatly on stomps and soccer kicks. So to me, the greatest minus when coming to the UFC was the change in rules… I hope that one day, the UFC can legalize foot stomps and soccer kicks. It would be great. I miss it. During the PRIDE era, I have no recollection of anyone getting hurt badly from stomps or soccer kicks. Elbows, in truth, really do hurt an opponent.”

Former UFC light-heavyweight champion, Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua believes that the UFC is getting it wrong in regards to the range of strikes allowed inside the Octagon.

In truth, the unified rules of Mixed Martial Arts is governed and enforced by each governing body (Athletic Commission) but the UFC could introduce rule changes to the commission’s for consideration.

Will they though? It’s doubtful.

As much as I like watching a fighter use their elbows skillfully, I wouldn’t be sad to see them banned.

Elbows have been responsible for prematurely ending some otherwise excellent fights, as elbows invariably cut people so easily. And even though the cuts can be bloody, we all know they’re largely minor injuries. So when a minor injury (cut) ends a fight I don’t feel that we’ve seen a true fight and a ‘proper’ fight between highly skilled advisories, or the ‘real’ winner declared. I feel robbed, as I did when I was a fighter and my fights were ended because I had a tiny but bloody cut (twice, once due to a pussy elbow shot cutting my eyebrow).

It’s been talked about before, and it’s because of the cage. They were fine in pride without anything for the opponents head to be trapped against. They’re a lot more dangerous if the head is soccer kicked while down against the cage.

Getting smashed across your face with a shin at the end of a largely muscled athletes leg is less painful than an elbow?

I think the concern is using elbows for ground and pound and not standing. I really do not have any opinions on this matter just yet.

I’ve always thought that elbows on the ground were dirty, it’s like the fighter is trying to win via cut. The fighters end up getting too much scar tissue and it effects them later in the years wear they get busted open and cut up easier. I’m no fan of soccer kicks either, but I really think that elbows on the ground really takes the Martial arts out of fighting in the cage. If it was up to me, I would ban them.

HAI GUISE. the rules in the UFC are terrible and are one of the reasons there is so much stalling . And add the terrible 10 point must system
