Rumored: Anderson Silva Now Wants Rematch This Year

In the wake of his shocking defeat to Chris Weidman, a disappointed Anderson Silva, while still in the octagon, stated that he had no interest in a rematch for the belt that was his for almost seven years. When asked about those words in the post-fight press conference, UFC president Dana White quickly turned down any possibilities that the next middleweight title bout won’t mean another collision between “the Spider” and “the All-American”, saying that “there’s nothing more that [Silva] wants than a rematch”. Apparently, the boss was right.

As reported by MMA Fighting, sources close to Anderson Silva have stated that the former champion has completely changed his mind. Not only the Spider wants an immediate rematch with Weidman, but he cannot wait for it. Silva is now looking for his next fight to be still in 2013, and the middleweight belt must be on the line. At first, rumors coming from the Brazilian’s camp indicated that the 38-year-old was thinking about returning to action on February of 2014, on Super Bowl weekend. That seems to be a little too far away for Silva now.

If so, Anderson’s desire to fight before New Year’s Eve combines with Dana White’s idea of scheduling the much-anticipated rematch to the organization’s traditional year-end show, on December 28th. That would be UFC 168, at the same MGM Grand Garden Arena where Silva lost his middleweight reign. Coming that plan to fruition, another big rematch in Ronda Rousey versus Miesha Tate, which is currently UFC 168’s main event, could be postponed to the day before Super Bowl XLVIII on February of next year.

However, no official word has been set on stone yet regarding Chris Weidman’s first challenge as the new middleweight king. All signs point, though, to that being another clash with Anderson Silva, the man who defended the 185-pound belt for a record-setting 10 straight times and was finally beaten after 16 wins in a row. The TKO defeat by the hands of the 29-year-old American marked the first time the “Spider” saw himself in the losing side of a UFC bout. On the other hand, Weidman, who is still undefeated after ten professional fights, will look to start his own era inside the division. That will probably put Silva on his path once again, sooner rather than later.
