The World Series of Fighting announced its next welterweight championship fight between champion Steve Carl and organizational newcomer Rousimar Palhares. The fight will take place on the WSOF 9 card on March 29 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Rousimar Palhares (15-5) had one of the most infamous departures from the UFC last year when the organization released him for unsportsmanlike conduct for holding a submission well after opponent Mike Pierce’s verbal and physical submission and the referee’s attempts to end the fight.
It was not the first time Palhares had ended a fight in this manner, and following his release Palhares seemed doomed to fight outside of any major MMA promotion. WSOF President Ray Sefo initially rejected the idea of signing Palhares, only to recant when the World Series offered him a contract just a month later.
In Steve Carl (21-3), Palhares will face the WSOF’s top welterweight fighter. Carl has fought and won three fights inside the organization, earning all three victories by way of submission. The most recent of these bouts saw Carl defeat Josh Burkman in the inaugural championship fight.
About the fight, Carl posted on Twitter earlier today, “Haters are going to hate and I’m going to keep doing my thing! #fearless.”
WSOF 9 will take place on March 29 at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. The card will also feature Marlon Moraes and Josh Rettinghouse, as they fight for the WSOF’s inaugural bantamweight title.
