Rousey’s Coach on Mousasi vs. Machida: “I hate that fight”

Ronda Rousey’s coach Edmond Tarverdyan took some time this week during a media scrum at the Ronda Rousey UFC 170 open workout last Monday to discuss the improvements in Ronda’s striking game and her upcoming match with fellow Olympian Sara McMann.

He also discussed how he feels about the upcoming bout between one of Coach Tarverdyan’s regulars in Gegard Mousasi and former UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida set to take place this Saturday, February 15, at UFC Fight Night 36. The event is scheduled to take place at Arena Jaragua in Santa Catarina, Brazil.

Coach Tarverdyan doesn’t like the match up it seems. “I hate that fight,” he stated during a media scrum.

“Gegard had a knee surgery, coming back from a knee surgery, 10 months layoff, I hate that fight, I’m gonna be honest.”

He continued, stating that he felt that Mousasi was not given an adequate amount of time to prepare for an opponent such as Machida who he admits “has a little bit of an edge” as he comes off the momentum of a head kick knockout of training partner Mark Munoz.

Tarverdyan knows that Mousasi, as a fighter, is not one to turn down a fight, however he wishes that the circumstances were different.

“I would like to see how Gegard performed if his knee was good and he just had a fight it could have been a bit equal. I’m going to be honest, as a trainer’s point of view. But Gegard is always dangerous and he’s my boy. So, I’m rooting for him.”

Taryerdyan was then asked about how he felt concerning Mousasi’s drop from 205lbs to the 185 pound division.

“I do (like Mousasi at 185 pounds). Gregard trains hard and keeps disciplined and is strong at 185. He can do it.”

Mousasi and Machida will face off this Saturday, February 15, at UFC Fight Night 36.
