Rousey: ‘I think I’ve got two years left in me, realistically’

UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey (7-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) has had a big impact on the sport of Mixed Martial Arts and in doing so has become a major ‘superstar’ in the UFC.

Before settling on a career in MMA, Rousey participated and won a bronze medal in Judo at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

Now, with Ronda recieving opportunities to star in movies and make money outside of the cage, many are wondering how much longer she will stay in the sport of MMA.

Rousey recently talked to MMAJunkie.com and touched on the topic:

“I said from the beginning that I work in quadrennials,” said Rousey. “I do four-year cycles. I think I’ve got two years left in me, realistically, if I’m going to do this like an Olympic run.”

“I think one profession has a much-longer shelf life than the other. My last fight, I was kind of forced to face my mortality a little bit. I had an air of invincibility about me, and I was kind of forced to realize statistically there is a chance you could get permanently hurt or even die. There’s only so many times you can roll the dice.

“I am the best f—ing fighter in the world, and I truly believe that, but you’re still rolling the dice no matter who you are, so I do have to kind of set up an exit strategy. That’s what I did wrong in judo. I followed it all the way until the end, and I didn’t put any thought into after.”

“I really want to do something special, and I really want to be the person that was able to do both (acting and fighting).”

“I’ve got two more years to get the ball rolling without me. TUF was the first step. It’s not the last one, but the work’s getting done.”

Rousey’s next octagon appearance will serve as a rematch against her longtime rival Miesha Tate in the co-main event of UFC 168 this December.

What do you think of Ronda’s recent statements regarding her career? Let’s hear it Penn Nation!

so it’s 2 years & then off to acting?! that’s so fu(c)kin’ lame there’s no words for it. smh

This is kind of disappointing to hear, but honestly, it does seem a little safer for women to only fight X amount of times and then retire. No woman wants to get beat up too much and then retire with a busted-up face. I kind of like Rousey’s plan. I hope she goes out undefeated. That would be very, very cool.
