Rory MacDonald vs Demian Maia Set for UFC 170

UFC Officials have announced the addition of an exciting welterweight bout to February’s UFC 170 event.

Rory MacDonald and Demian Maia have both agreed to fight.

For the first time since his 2010 defeat to Carlos Condit, MacDonald is coming off of a loss. After a highly competitive 3 rounds with Robbie Lawler, the Canadian’s 4-fight win streak was snapped by a split decision. The Tristar gym standout has been surrounded with much hype as of late, but with his most recent loss, it appears as though a slower, more progressive pace would better suite his ascent to the top of the division. After all, being only 24 years old, the welterweight phenom has plenty of time.

Maia is also coming off of a loss, and much like MacDonald’s, it was a highly competitive fight that ended in a split decision. The Brazilian was last seen in the cage against Jake Shields, in a clash of arguably the two most skilled and decorated jiu-jitsu specialists of the welterweight division. After a technical, grapple-heavy 5 round affair, Shields took the win with a very close decision, and thus giving Maia his first loss at welterweight in the process.

UFC 170 will take place on February 22, 2014 in Las Vegas, Nevada at the Mandalay Bay Events Center.

Oh Yeah, I’m liking this one, hopefully McDonald will get back to form and retire the snoozefest Maia. Hopefully Maia will be at WSOF after this. Does anybody like his fights?

    • brandon says:

I agree, maia is very boring. Rory will smash him worse than he did bj, and that’s pretty bad.

      • KIDD433 says:

Maia, compared to McDonald? Kidding right? You must not have seen what Maia to Rick Story? McDonald’s fight with Ellenverger was an absolute disgrace to combat sports

  2. The Way Of The Dutchman says:

I liked how Maia manhandled Fitch and in the process gave Fitch his ticket out of the UFC. Shields robbed Maia.
    .
And if anyone is boring it’s MacDonald. Maia isn’t undersized like BJ was so MacDonald can’t use his size advantage. We could see in the fight against Lawler how he does against a fighter just as big as him and that wasn’t a lot. Wasn’t even a close fight like the author says, Lawler wiped the floor with him.
    .
I’m rooting for Maia, hell who am I kidding I’m rooting for everyone who fights MacDouchebag…

  3. Nate "THE ROID CHEAT" Marquardt says:

How anyone isn’t a huge Maia fan for what he did to Fitch i will never understand. Same goes for Hendricks. They both deserve us MMA fans utmost respect for ” GETTING RID OF FITCH” Fitch was the scurge of the UFC and ruined MMA for countless fans.

I hope Maia submits ROIDY MAC who is a snoozefest

  4. 757 says:

Maia will sub this tool. Rory and his whole canadian maniac routine are over. He beat BJ an Nate who really are both undersized welterweights…big deal. He is getting choked in this one. BTW Robbie Lawler whooped his ass. Maybe he can start his own gay men’s clothing line.

  5. Thesire says:

I’m a fan of anyone who beats this hyped pos. I thought he was a top prospect after the condit fight and he came back from that in good form but then he started believing the hype, changing his nickname and style to be more suave, fighting boring and conservative. Idk if anybody noticed it but when he fought lawyer he looked like he took a nap on his chest. I still think he’s a top prospect but he needs to humble himself and just fight. Until then Maia all day!!

  6. Gargoyle Wrestling says:

McDonald hasn’t even scratched the surface of his abilities and level he will reach. He will most likely be champ someday after Hendricks’ time has passed. Lawler was the perfect test for him to wake him up and his camp. Rory faced am experienced southpaw that took away the Tristar jab and without that set-up move, Rory was off balance and never in the zone. Let’s not forget that round 1 could have been a 10-10 as nothing really happened. Round 2 went Rory but no real fireworks. Round 3 was obvious Lawler’s round and more dominate than the other 2. Robbie beat him easily but if one judge would have given round 1 to Rory instead of Robbie he would have won. Lawler is probably #2 and Rory could have beaten him. The only real test for Rory is how can he beat a top wrestler in Hendricks, etc. So Rory will adjust and be back at it. Anyways, I don’t see Maia giving him much competition. Maia is BOOORRRRIIINNNG. He should be cut. Time to twitter bomb DW to get rid of this guy.

  7. 757 says:

Should be cut? Go look at who he has fought. Please don’t get crazy. BTW your boy Rory is a weirdo and an emotional train wreck. He is getting choked in this one.
