Rory MacDonald: “Sometimes, You Just Want to Hurt Someone and Devastate Their Lives”

Early on in the career of 23-year old Rory MacDonald (14-1), most had never heard the fighter speak past candid interviews. Now with a 5-1 UFC record and a loss just to perennial top-contender Carlos Condit, the young Canadian native has plenty of motivation and momentum driving him to the upper echelon of the sport.

His next test is against Jake Ellenberger (29-6) at UFC on FOX 8 in the co-main event. Prior to the fight, Ellenberger has been somewhat vocal about his intentions in the fight and has gone to Twitter to verbally harass MacDonald in a potential attempt to gain the mental edge.

MacDonald recently responded to these pre-fight antics by describing what happens when an opponent is excessively vocal prior to a fight with ‘Ares’, in this case, his last opponent, B.J. Penn:

“The B.J. fight, I was having fun just beating on him. He was talking a little bit of trash, so I figured I might just hurt him a little bit more.”

MacDonald recently spoke to another MMA news outlet and let us in on his intentions when he steps in with an opponent who has made their bout personal:

“Sometimes you train so hard and for so long and you only get 15 minutes max of game day for a few times a year,” MacDonald said. “So sometimes it’s nice to spend a little time in there and get hit once or twice or hit him a little more. Sometimes it’s just a little more fun. Sometimes, you just want to hurt someone and devastate their lives fast. But I only react to how I’m feeling that night.”

Both fighters are coming off of impressive wins with MacDonald dominating former UFC lightweight and welterweight champion, B.J. Penn while Ellenberger made short work of Nate Marquardt, stopping him by knockout in the first round of their UFC 158 bout back in March.

UFC on FOX 8 takes place on July 27th at the Key Arena in Seattle, Washington. It is headlined by a flyweight title fight between Demetrious Johnson and the challenger to his 125-pound crown.

  1. K2 says:

ut oh, Rory’s got less than 2 weeks to hurt himself and pull out. …that didn’t sound quite right…

  2. Dis Guy says:

if rory macdonald died… that would be great!

  3. magoo says:

Rorymacs gonna put a whoopin on Ellenberger!

  4. jim says:

No doubt a talented tough fighter, that’s were it ends.

Not a lot of personality to him…

  5. KIDD433 says:

I agree Jim. Imagine If he won the title? We would have another fake ass bag as champion, like Jon Jones.Lets just give Rory the benefit of the doubt in the BJ fight, maybe it was just his roid rage.

    • Thom1 says:

Say what you want about Rory but he’s definitely not fake. Dude speaks his mind. I personally think he can beat any WW out there, dont like the guy but he’s really impressive. Jake E will be a true test though.

  6. Keoni says:

What a lunatic Rory is! What does he want to do? Fight to the death! Devestate your challenger in the octagon… Even though he tested clean w vada for the bj fight he must be on steroids! He prob pays off vada!

  7. Keoni says:

Guaranteed rory is a major steroid user the fact that he has pimples is PROOF enough! Look at all the guys who won against bj all cheaters! GSP grease and steroids! Diaz needs weed and rory and Fitch are both taller and I’m 100% sure rory and Fitch are major roiders!!! Hughes is natural and bj beat him 2 out of 3! Edgar won by running away the entire fight and the judges were for sure paid off in that fight! Bj beat guys like joe Stevenson and Kenny who r the top level guys! GSP rory Diaz and Edgar knew they had to cheat with steroids to even stand a chance! Plus bj is a natural 55’er or maybe even ’45 er… IMHO bj beat machida in the fight years ago… I think if u put bj against any clean fighter he could beat anyone even guys like Cain and Jon jones would go down against bj… Bj is a rare prodigy with a solid chin elite bjj and powerful striker… Bj is the best p4p and that is a fact! Even silva said so! I guarantee bj would destroy silva if they fought… But I’d love to see a open weight tournament for bjs last UFC run where all guys are tested for real and bj would come out as the winner! The only guy that even remotely stand a chance vs bj is maybe fedor or Cormier!

  8. Slim Charles says:

eh… you didn’t even look that impressive in the BJ fight; size advantage like crazy and you didn’t even knock him down once…

  9. WarEllenberger says:

War Ellenberger from the middle of the map, fuck this soft Canadian. UNO wrestling and power will dominate this clown.

  10. Nick says:

Rory’s futile attempts at having a personality.

  11. The Way Of The Dutchman says:

I hope Ellenberger knocks his head off.
