Rory MacDonald: “Sometimes, You Just Want to Hurt Someone and Devastate Their Lives”
Early on in the career of 23-year old Rory MacDonald (14-1), most had never heard the fighter speak past candid interviews. Now with a 5-1 UFC record and a loss just to perennial top-contender Carlos Condit, the young Canadian native has plenty of motivation and momentum driving him to the upper echelon of the sport.
His next test is against Jake Ellenberger (29-6) at UFC on FOX 8 in the co-main event. Prior to the fight, Ellenberger has been somewhat vocal about his intentions in the fight and has gone to Twitter to verbally harass MacDonald in a potential attempt to gain the mental edge.
MacDonald recently responded to these pre-fight antics by describing what happens when an opponent is excessively vocal prior to a fight with ‘Ares’, in this case, his last opponent, B.J. Penn:
“The B.J. fight, I was having fun just beating on him. He was talking a little bit of trash, so I figured I might just hurt him a little bit more.”
MacDonald recently spoke to another MMA news outlet and let us in on his intentions when he steps in with an opponent who has made their bout personal:
“Sometimes you train so hard and for so long and you only get 15 minutes max of game day for a few times a year,” MacDonald said. “So sometimes it’s nice to spend a little time in there and get hit once or twice or hit him a little more. Sometimes it’s just a little more fun. Sometimes, you just want to hurt someone and devastate their lives fast. But I only react to how I’m feeling that night.”
Both fighters are coming off of impressive wins with MacDonald dominating former UFC lightweight and welterweight champion, B.J. Penn while Ellenberger made short work of Nate Marquardt, stopping him by knockout in the first round of their UFC 158 bout back in March.
UFC on FOX 8 takes place on July 27th at the Key Arena in Seattle, Washington. It is headlined by a flyweight title fight between Demetrious Johnson and the challenger to his 125-pound crown.
