Rory MacDonald Looks To Enter Top 5 With Win Over Penn | UFC NEWS

“The UFC had expressed interest in seeing Penn and I fight. At the time I had no idea that BJ was considering coming out of retirement. So I thought I would jump at the chance to fight him. I believe that this sport is performance based. If BJ and I go out there and put on a boring fight no one will want to see me fight the other top guys currently in the spotlight. On the flip side I can put on an exciting, technical fight and walk away victorious then it puts me in the mix and in the top five of the welterweight division.”

While talking to MMAFrenzy.com, rising Canadian superstar Rory MacDonald discussed his pending matchup with BJ Penn and the impact a victory at UFC 152 will have on his career.

With his peers and teammates calling him the next champ, and his string of dominance over the UFC’s welterweight division is he deserving of a top 5 seat?

Speak on it Penn Nation!

  1. Truth says:

It ll be a good fight but I highly doubt Rory will win BJ will be motivated to make a statement

    • Matt says:

Saw Rory at the Vancouver airport. I am 5 10 at 195lbs. I felt very small next to him. He is one of the bigger WW. Love BJ (for the most part who comes to this site?). I also saw Rory fight Condit live. Let’s say that Rory can take a lot of punches. The ref stopped that fight, but Rory was not going to tap out due to strikes.

The only way BJ wins this fight is by knockout and I don’t think he will catch Rory like he did Hughes.

Hate to see either fighter lose this one. Big Penn fan, but I live in B.C. (Rory is from B.C.). I suppose I would like BJ to win and then retire. He is not going to have much success trying to fight bigger men. UFC is too competitive now. I think the only fighter that can move around weight classes is Silva…..and maybe Aldo.

  2. Truth says:

Bj will make a statement this fight

    • DontBeScaredHomie says:

Yeaah the statement will be he should have stayed retired after that beating Diaz gave him he will never be the same

  3. Jimmmmmmmmy says:

I also don’t see why Rory is so pumped about being top 5 but says he’ll never fight GSP, does he know GSP will hold the title for a long time?

  4. Clay says:

I think rory is going to take bj down and beat his ass. Rory isn’t dumb enough to stand and strike w bj.

    • Joe says:

I think Rory is going to find out that trying to get a takedown on Che Mills and BJ Penn are two very different things. If BJ comes in motivated and in shape and forces McDonald to stand with him… Then Rory is in trouble.

      • Sonnen says:

Nate Diaz isn’t exactly easy to take down either but Rory ragdolled him around the octagon. Also think Rorys kickboxing is superior to BJ’s but well have to see. I predict 2nd round tko for Rory.

        • Jaedr says:

you’re as dumb as your name suggests.

        • Not You says:

I agree with you. I like Nate a lot, but Rory was just too strong and too much for him. BJ might fair better, but unless he clips Rory early and takes him out his only chance is a sub.

        • Nick says:

Nate is smaller than BJ and he also isn’t as strong so that like saying a can ripped a paper bag and a can ripped a wet paper bag

        • Clay says:

Wtf kind of drugs are you on? I definately want some..

    • James says:

If Rory can take BJ down, and is able to completely avoid and neturalize BJ’s submissions and ability to stand back up, then he should be the champion already, and he probably should have beat Condit easy in the first fight. Its hard to beat a guys face in when he’s trying to tap you out, and BJ will definetly be trying to do that. Don’t count BJ out, learn from Matt Hughes mistake

  5. James says:

This is a crazy fight. BJ has the potential to win. But this is such a crazy fight because of Macdonalds takedowns, he’s like GSP with them. But I think the difference here is even if he can put BJ on his back, he’s not gonna be greasy (not saying GSP did it on purpose) and that means BJ can go for submissions all night long. Its so cliche, but the only thing we have to worry about is BJ somehow not having top notch cardio, or getting held up against the cage, and tired out. Other then that, I don’t see how you can’t have this fight even, or even BJ as a slight favorite. Whatever the oddsmakers say, look for BJ to show his warrior spirit, and his incredible heart. WAR PENN

  6. Rodriguez says:

I agree Bj can win very easily. People are underestimating his ground game! Randy Couture himself said he couldn’t take Bj pen down. I agree with James that we just have to worry about Bj’s cardio.

  7. m says:

they say this guy is the future of mma and the ww division.
test this guy. if tri-star is known for anything other than developing elite athletes….its cheating.

i like rory mcdonald. he’s a beast, but he best not be Roiding

  8. allmightysandman says:

without calling who’s going to win…cause this could be a great fight…and a war!

If Rory beats a legend, it’s kind of hard not to say that he’s top tier….top 5 maybe, top 10 likely.

BJ could make a strong statement to be considered a top tier WW with this win too.

both have a lot to gain.

This is going to be really good fight!

  9. Zulwali says:

I believe Rory will pull an upset on this one guys, Think about it, he’s still young he’s always motivated. his last 2 fights is already a statement, I’m not totally counting out on Bj here because i think this is going to be a war. I hope bj gets his fire back and when he gets into that Octagon i really hopes he’ll unleash hell.

  10. jones says:

i love bj..but his fans dont kno when to give up…bj is too small he going get dolled….an rory how does beating over weight lw just in top 10 lw make u top 5 ww?

  11. josh y says:

Saw bj at kens a lil while ago.. he sure did look motivated destroying that food.

  12. DMAC says:

All you scrub buckets that say if Rory takes BJ down BJ will submit him. Lol when’s the last time BJ got a sub off his back………. And I’m so sick of having to say, “if he’s motivated and in shape” it’s like bro don’t fight if your not motivated and out of shape. Makes no sense to me but hopefully he’s over that bullshit..

  13. WreslingRules says:

I don’t car about submissions, I just want to see two guys humping each other! Now that gets my little dick hard.

  14. B-rad says:

penns takedown defense is going to be the factor in this fight. Rorys standup isnt as good as bj’s so if rory cant take him down i think bj will use his boxing to get the win

    • allmightysandman says:

I agree….that’s the key to the fight I think.

If it goes to the mat with Rory on top, I believe he has a big advantage in that position….if BJ figures out how to stop his takedown attempts and it stays standing, BJ definitely has the advantage…

I really don’t know who to pick…big challenge for both guys.

    • WrestlingRules says:

You got it…Rory is toast. Hopefully BJ brings in Hughes… Isee BJ ko or choke out by rd2.

    • jones says:

@ b-rad retard…bj has great takedown defence at lw or on guys his size…sure gsp greased but that did not have anything to do with bj getting slammed

  15. Dustin Smith says:

Rory should already be a top 5 guy, his only loss is Condit, which if any of you have seen that fight, a quite debatable stoppage in a fight he was winning. This guy tossed around Nate Diaz like a punk. I love BJ…..one of my favorites ever. But he’s not gonna beat MacDonald…..that guy is a beast, and will continue to be a beast. And also, i took major joy in seeing him F Diaz in the B……he made a fan out of me on that night.

  16. stephen riddle says:

If bj has cardio then its on! Bj hardly winds up on his back and usually whoever takes him down ends up in a body triangle and choked.train hard bj u can do this!!!!!

    • jones says:

do u watch bj fight?? how has been chokked from taking bj down??? hughs 1 time and caused bj to gas and say he git hurt??? bj has 0 bjj off his back sorry fukk..when he has you rocked he is good rear naked thats it

  17. Kjtrlt says:

Rory will definitely win. BJ will put on a good show, but will not win this one. It should be a great fight though.

  18. Dick Diaz says:

    Rory, you’re going down.

  19. King Prodigy Levreau says:

This young Kat “MacDonald” sounds like he is motivated, cocky and trying to make a statement against Mr. PENN. WAR PENN WAR!!! Make your own statement against this young lion. All you “haters” on BJPENN.com talking about Mr. Penn like he is washed up and can’t hack it anymore, seem to me like you are worried about your “new” favorite fighter and what the possibility could be when the prodigy has his fire renewed and ready to test himself again against the best. WIn or lose this man will always be the CHAMP and I will say it again PENN NATION…BJ with the win by rear naked choke in the 2nd round. Cali Love from the NO!

    • allmightysandman says:

show me one statement where Rory is cocky. he is respectful and wants to fight a legend….how does that equal cocky?

      • King Prodigy Levreau says:

Cocky!…in that he feels that he will look really good in a fight against BJ, by not putting on a boring fight and probably by using his gameplan and strategy to win against a legend. He’s a beast and taking on a legend. You don’t need to say some things to have a meaning or show emotion and belief. Macdonald would have to be confident and cocky to believe in himself at this high of a level and fight the people he believes he can beat. He might be top 5 level in his mind and reality…but he is NOT BJ’s level in his prime and maybe not even now. WAR PENN WAR!!!

And a quote and article to your question to why I feel he is cocky…DO YOUR WORK SON!

        http://www.mmamania.com/2012/4/8/2934735/ufc-145-rory-macdonald-welterweight-title-middleweight-mma

The man is looking ahead a little bit…One love from the Central Cali’s “NO”

        • allmightysandman says:

easy with the “son” bullshit there warrior. I’m not new here to this site, nor to MMA…so just settle down with the teacher and student attitude.

you just don’t understand the difference between cocky and confident apparently.

Rory beat up the interim champ for all but 10 seconds, ragdolled nate, disfigured che mills (a lot of hype but maybe undeserved) and he has no right to be confident? strange opinion you have there.

He speaks highly and respectfully of BJ and wants to fight a legend…no harm in that. It’s a competitive combat sport so if a guy can’t call another guy out and not be hated for it then there is something pretty wrong IMHO.

        • King Prodigy Levreau says:

I’m not a teacher here my friend…we all have opinions and we all love the sport! Read my quote carefully, he has BOTH…and yes I know the difference. I showed you a statement and a quote, like you asked, from another site just to show that there are others that feel the same. I have no problem with someone calling someone else out or wanting to test himself against only the best in the sport. Doesn’t mean he will win! BJ is the G.O.A.T. and I know that you are not new to the site or mma but I come here to represent and ride-or-die for the Hawaiian and PENN Nation. IMHO. Let me ask you this…Do you know Mac Donald personally? and why do you care if I think he is cocky for looking pass a whole division and then adding on some weight later and thinks he will just dominate another division. I’m not saying he can’t do it…but it sounds COCKY to me! One love from the cali’s “NO”…ALLMIGHTYSANDMAN. Sorry for the “son”! We are all equals. Sounds like you really like this MacDonald kat.

  20. NiggerDick says:

BJ is fucked, too small and will come in out of shape just 75% of all his fights.

    • King Prodigy Levreau says:

First…your name “SUCKS” literally and second BJ is “too small” against “MacDonald”. BJ doesn’t care about size advantages when he accepts fights with guys like Machida. Ummm okay! Third and last point to your BS comment…”out of shape 75% of all his fights”. This man might not be buff-n-stuff like some other so called fighters, that might have even cheated to get where there at so that you can say they are in shape. But to say “out of shape” when Bj has been training his whole life. Ummm okay! There is nothing in BJ’s life that is “out of shape” except for haters like you. BJ is not f*cked by N.D. he is coming back to prove what he has known the whole time…that some people have counted him out except HIMSELF!!! WAR PENN WAR! You my friend suck…your name. One love from Cali’s “NO”.

  21. Keep Fitch (Forever) says:

Lets be realistic rory is going to win by dominating bj.

  22. Mike b says:

Rory is a fucking a animal.i am very impressed with him butt I gotta go with bj.i think bj will go into that fight thinking u mutherfuckers thought I was done im about to show u why I was a two division champ and one of most feared lightweights of all time.if he has that mindset I feel bad for rory.bj is the fucking man.
