Rory MacDonald and Robbie Lawler are set to fight at UFC 167, the UFC confirmed Tuesday.
Just days after UFC President, Dana White, expressed the organization’s intent to make the match-up, the contracts have been signed for the two, top-10 ranked welterweights to meet in the Octagon in November.
Both fighters are coming off important victories at the UFC on FOX 8 card in July. Robbie Lawler (21-9) knocked out Bobby Volker in the second round of their fight. This was Lawler’s second consecutive stoppage since returning to the UFC in February.
That same night, Rory MacDonald (15-1) scored a unanimous decision against top-ranked welterweight, Jake Ellenberger. Though MacDonald played the fight safe, sticking to his jab to frustrate Ellenberger for three rounds, the victory cemented his spot in the welterweight division.
Given these recent performances, the UFC may be looking to pressure MacDonald into fighting more actively. Following the July card, White criticized MacDonald for refusing to try and finish Ellenberger. In Lawler, who has received nothing but White’s praise since returning from Strikeforce, MacDonald will face a fighter who will push the fight and look for the knockout.
The match-up is only the second fight to be added to the UFC 167 card. The other is the anticipated title fight between Johny Hendricks and champion, Georges St-Pierre.
