Rick Roufus Blog Week 3

A lot of people have been asking me to give my opinion on the other fights scheduled for the U.S. Grand Prix Championship and I have to be honest I am not all that up to date on who these guys are. My sole focus is on getting myself ready and being prepared to face a tough opponent in Mighty Mo. I know Seth Petruzelli from his days in mixed martial arts, I know Dewey Cooper pretty well and of course I am very familiar with Mighty Mo. Xavier Vigney will be making his pro debut I believe and is an amateur champion, everyone seems to be touting him as the next Badr Hari.

This past week has been another good one for me. I am in a great place both physically and mentally. My training is on schedule and right where it needs to be. My coach Shihan Nico and my boxing coach Wayne Viers are extremely happy with what they have seen from me. We are certainly looking forward for what lies ahead of us in the coming weeks. We have a little over a week left and we are ready for the fight.

My routine has stayed relatively the same throughout this training camp. I wake up early three or four days a week and go running. On Monday, Wednesday & Friday I am typically in the boxing gym and on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday I spend time with Shihan Nico. Wayne Viers will come in for some of my workouts and help me with my sparring. I also teach my kickboxing class at The MMA Lab a few nights a week. I’ve been teaching for so many years, I began teaching at my brother Duke’s gym in Milwaukee and I had opened up my own gym when I first got to Phoenix. I have been teaching at the lab since 2009.

This upcoming weekend we have plans to get together with my sister-in-law and brother-in-law to do the family thing. I plan on taking Saturday off to try and get some time to relax. Every Sunday I go to church and this Sunday I am taking my son to the Diamondbacks game. Other than that whatever free time I have is spent with my wife & kids. As I have stated before when I am training the time to spend with them is hard to come by so I try and take advantage of whatever time we have together.

I have never been a guy who was big on watching footage of my opponents past fights. I let my coaches break down the tape and then they can implement the game plan as they see fit. By the time I get home every night I am so tired and have very little desire to watch tapes of their past fights! With Mighty Mo I have seen him compete so many times I don’t need to watch any more footage. You know what you are getting with him, he has a great overhand right and a good left hook. If you stand and bang with him you are probably going to get knocked out, you have to fight him smart. He’s a big guy who weighs around 285lbs so it’s best to fight intelligently.

I had heard about the cancellation of UFC 151 the day it happened. I was getting ready to train at the Lab and Efrain Escudero was telling us all about it. What’s bad is that all the other fighters will not get their paychecks and they need that money to pay their bills. You have to respect the fact that Jones didn’t have enough time to prepare for Chael Sonnen. Back when I was fighting early on in my career for K-1 we would have our opponents changed on just a few days notice. Last year I was supposed to fight Mighty Mo in October, but the day before the fight they changed my opponent.

If it were me, I would get input from my coaches, but ultimately I would make the final decision. I would do what I thought was the best thing for me to do. On one hand you turn down the fight and it leaves all the other guys without a fight, but on the other hand Jones has so much at stake. He just signed the deal with Nike and we all know that Sonnen is no walk in the park for anyone. Look at what he did to Brian Stann a few fights ago. He’s a tough dude and he’s done a great job of promoting himself and showing people that side of his persona.

My family will not be joining me in Los Angeles, my wife gets too nervous and can’t watch me fight. She would rather keep herself busy and stay occupied. K-1 was just out here and they interviewed my wife and my kids. The videotaped me playing baseball with my son and reading books with my daughter. My children know who I am and what I have accomplished. My son has already predicted that I would beat Mighty Mo! I will have some friends and students making the trip to lend me some support and root me on.

Again I have to thank Shihan Nico and my boxing coach Wayne Viers, without them I wouldn’t be where I am out. They are with me day in and day out. They implement my game plan and are helping me get from point A to point B in order to beat Mighty Mo. I’d also like to thank World Dent and Dr. Scott Wilson. I also want to thank my fans for being so supportive and I can tell you they will not be disappointed come September 8th.
