Rich Franklin Considering Undergoing TRT To Prolong His Career | UFC News

By Jamie McAllister
Rich Franklin comments while appearing on The MMA Hour.

Rich Franklin steps into the Octagon on June 23, 2012, to face Wanderlei Silva for the second time at UFC 147 in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.

In the interview with the MMA Hour the former Middleweight champion talks TRT as well as saying his retirement may not be far off.

“I hate quitting more than I hate giving up. I don’t like quitting, that’s all. I do what I do and I do what I love. About two or three years ago, I started getting asked about retirement and now that I’ve been asked about it in every single interview since then, I am kind of conditioned to understand that retirement is sometime in the near future. I don’t have a date, I don’t plan on fighting into my forties, but I do believe that I am one of those people that will wake up one day and say, “you know what? I’ve had enough and I’ve done enough and I’m good.”

When asked if he would consider using TRT Franklin seemed open to the idea.

“Yeah, I’ve kicked around that idea and everything, and actually I’ve talked to doctors that work with the UFC and the athletic commission in Nevada and all that kind of stuff. And at 37, my count obviously is not what it was when I was 25, and I’m a candidate for that kind of stuff. I haven’t started yet. I’m not sure if that’s something I want to do or how I want to approach that, because TRT is, once you start that process it’s a permanent fixture. Once you start putting those hormones in your body , those synthetic hormones , then your body is not going to produce its own hormones any more, and so you really have to think carefully. My levels are still decently healthy for a male, but they’re not high enough to continue a prolonged career at a top level for many more years.”

kinda proves that fighters are using trt to have the test of someone 15 years younger than them rather than someone their own age.

thats wrong, you shouldnt try defy age.
its not a deficiency, it naturally drops when you get older
a deficiency is when you are abnormally low for your age

    • Gould says:

I agree with your statement and i also think they’re putting extra strain on their body by pumping that test back into themselves… like trying to run an old engine at full capacity all the time, it may come back to haunt some of these guys

  2. Akid says:

Soon we’ll have the young guns searching for appropriate brain transplants so they can keep up with the older fighters (experience wise)……

  3. bxer says:

Time to leave! Dude,no matter what sport you play you can’t beat age,be a real sportsmanlike,is not fucking equal to younger fighters, call it whatever you wan TRT is a peds,I have always love MMA but is now turning into a freaking circus if this shit continues MMA will never be a mainstream sport, too many injuries before fights, and all the fighters on drugs, if I was Dana white I be handing pink slips to every fighter who claims to need TRT,fuck the athletic commission is a fucking joke.

  4. CanILive says:

Maybe the UFC should start doing age divisions, or trt divisions, and then hold “grandmaster” championships

  5. Whatever says:

I tired of everyone saying TRT is so wrong, abuse of TRT is wrong. If your doing nothing more than keeping your levels equal to other fights why is that wrong. If it is then drinking a protine shake should be wrong or training at a better gym should be wrong. Should the guy who’s body naturally produces more test be penalized no so why shouldn’t guys who with age be aloud to bring there’s up to a leagal level. Just because others have cheated with this that doesn’t mean you give it a bad name. You take the guys who are on it and make them get checked each month there on it to stop any abuse. Saying as you age you shouldn’t be aloud to do this is no different than saying you can only train so long. Maybe we should penalize Clay for his cardio be so good but we don’t if you want better cardio you train higher to raise your red blood count. All I’m saying is we have all these other ways to make our body’s better and this is no diff as long as its not abused.

    • Akid says:

Age gives you the advantage of experience… If they can’t use that to win then too bad!!!

      • Whatever says:

All the experience in the world won’t help you recover faster, train harder and make weight faster. When your 38 tell me how you feel.

        • Akid says:

My point is YOU HAVE THE ADVANTAGE OF EXPERIENCE WITH AGE!!! I didn’t mention that it would give you faster recovery time etc. People at 38 have a big advantage over the younger and newer MMA athletes through experience in the ring and just life experience in general…. This is their advantage and is what they have to work with! If they are able to recover, train and make weight faster than their bodies are allowing them to naturally by boosting themselves with testosterone, I think this leaves the younger athletes at a severe disadvantage! As the saying goes – ‘There’s no substitute for experience’……

  6. B-rad says:

nooo not richie!! well this is one of those cases that i think is legit, ONLY because of his age. Although doctors say you dont start losing testosterone until you hit 40, but i suppose 37 is close enough.. there should be a rule like for bein the US president, if your under 35, you dont qulify that simple.

  7. jones says:

i d not ever think rich would do this,…do what randy did until 47 and eat right and take natural hit..if randy did tthis that is proof that nobody eeds trt really…this is an age where guys are just lazy looking for a qucik fix or easy edge….. when you 37 why should your testosteerone be at the level of a 25 year old…this is what causes heart attacks and shit..cuz these guys want thereolder bodys to act 25 when there not

  8. B-rad says:

i agree with bxer i think if you do have a legitimate need for trt thats fine.. i just think that they should have to piss 2:1 fucking regardless of whatever… not 6:1 the legal limit… thats retarded i am a healthy 19 year old i had a blood test done when i was 18 and i was 1..2:1 and i dont even take protein or nothin so yea they can go to 2:1 but 6:1 is obsurd

  9. shit talka says:

If Rich wants TRT then by all means let this man get his medicine and fight. These young cry babies whining about TRT because they dont want Sonnen or Franklin stomping on their ass. Its prescribed by a doctor with ten years minimum of school and ten years of practice. Id take TRT if I wasnt already taking testosterone, anadrol, and trenbolone. Your not big I am

  10. I have realized some new things from your web page about pcs. Another thing I have always considered is that computers have become a specific thing that each household must have for most reasons. They supply you with convenient ways to organize homes, pay bills, shop, study, focus on music and also watch tv series. An innovative approach to complete every one of these tasks is with a mobile computer. These pcs are mobile ones, small, strong and portable.

  11. I wonder how long it took you to prepare such an extensive blog. I am really into blogs. And yours is among my favourites.
