Ricardo Mayorga MMA Win Overturned to No Contest
Former boxing champion and controversial character, Ricardo Mayorga, scored a bizarre and short-lived victory in his MMA debut over Wesley Tiffer at Omega MMA’s ‘Battle of the Americas’ on May 3rd in his native Nicaragua. Not only did he miss weight by 15 pounds, but Mayorga was taken advantage of for the majority of the fight on the ground by Tiffer, as he had Mayorga mounted several times, but was unable to finish the former boxer. That was until Wesley Tiffer went for a triangle in the second round that led to the illegal finish.
As Tiffer was attempting to lock up the triangle and cinch his foot under his knee, Mayorga defended by attempting to roll out. Tiffer maintained the position and while still holding the triangle as both men were on their side, Mayorga unleashed the controversy yet again by landing a knee to the back of Tiffer, in what clearly appears to be the spine. Tiffer screamed in pain as Mayorga quickly stood up and went for the kill while Tiffer curled up in the fetal position in agony until the bell rang. When Wesley was unable to continue in the third round, the fight was declared a TKO victory for Mayorga, that is, until May 10th.
After review of the victory, the Nicaraguan MMA commission declared the win a No Contest due to illegal strikes to the spine, and then gave Mayorga a three month suspension for not making the specified weight. So in a sense, Mayorga was undefeated in his MMA debut for about a week, but considering the 39 year old can’t seem to escape some kind of controversy every time he fights, it looks like it may be time to hang up the gloves from all combat sports, permanently.
