Ricardo Arona Talks Return To MMA | "It’s Just A Matter Of Time." | MMA News
By Jamie McAllister
Ricardo Arona comments in an interview with TATAME.
Arona talks about returning to MMA as well as opening his own Mixed Martial Arts gym.
Arona has been out of action for some time now, in his last bout he defeated Marvin Eastman back in September 2009. He talks about his time away from the sport and states that it was exactly what his body needed.
“I haven’t stopped since I was 15, and I needed this rest, my body also needed it. I want to get back soon.”
“I really miss fighting and I think about it every day. It’s just a matter of time.”
Arona commented on the UFC’s Light-Heavyweight division and thinks with his skill-set he could make an impact.
“The athlete’s performance is getting better and better, mainly their conditioning. But technically I guess they’re in the same level. I only see a better conditioning preparation.”
“They’re faster and powered and it’s all about training. But technically I know it all.”
“I still see Jiu-Jitsu playing a big role in today’s scene. I have great takedown skills, which only few Brazilians have. I move well when I’m on my feet. I only need to train and be prepared to come back. It only takes training.”
When asked who he would like to fight when he eventually returns Arona chose not to call anyone out and wants to focus on getting in shape.
“I’ve been off for a couple of years, so it would be very cocky of me to start picking out names to fight. I want to be in shape because when you’re in shape you don’t need to point anyone. You just go there and fight.”
Arona admits it has been hard to turn down fight proposals and states that he wants to finish his gym before accepting anything.
“I plan to train daily, bring some black belts from Niteroi, bring good coaches and invite some friends over, like Rodrigo and Rogerio (Nogueira). I want gather a good team and set a head-quarters.”
“There’s always a proposition and people ask me when I’ll be fighting but I’m focused on finishing my dojo. After that I’ll think about fighting. That’s why I’m thinking ahead. I can’t close a deal right now.”
