Report: Rory MacDonald vs. Tyron Woodley In The Works
We now know who Johny Hendricks’ first title defense will be against.
MMA Junkie‘s Steven Marocco reports that Rory MacDonald and Tyron Woodley will square off during the UFC’s first trip to Canada this year (UFC174 in June), for a presumed number-one contender’s match. The fight makes sense not only on paper, but also because Hendricks is currently out-of-action, recovering from his surgery to repair a torn bicep.
MacDonald is coming off a decision win over Demian Maia in February. Prior to that, he lost a close split-decision to the man that would go on to challenge for the welterweight belt at UFC 171, Robbie Lawler.
Woodley’s last fight was on that same card, where he defeated Carlos Condit by way of TKO, after a knee injury left Condit unable to finish out the second round. Some fans feel that Woodley didn’t beat Condit, so much as Condit lost the fight by himself. But it was Woodley’s strength that caused the injury. After all, I’m fairly sure that – had it been Jake Shields doling out the takedown, for instance – Condit would have been okay.
UFC 174 is scheduled for June 14, and will take place in Vancouver, BC, Canada.
