The Ultimate Fighter 17 champion Kelvin Gastelum pulled out of his UFC on FOX 9 bout with Court McGee last week due to knee injury. On Wednesday night’s episode of “UFC Tonight,” it was reported that Gastelum has been cleared to fight without undergoing surgery; and the TUF champion wants to continue his climb the welterweight rankings with a shot at Rick Story at UFC 171.
The report stated that Gastelum originally asked to face Carlos Condit, but Condit has been scheduled to face another rising star at 170 lbs. in Tryon Woodley at UFC 171. That left Gastelum asking for another tough welterweight fighter in Rick Story.
Story has fought a number of the top welterweights in the UFC. Being the first person to ever defeat Johny Hendricks in Hendrick’s first 16 fights, Story helped former UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre prepare to face Hendricks at UFC 167.
As for Gastelum, the undefeated welterweight has earned two victories inside the UFC Octagon including his upset victory over Uriah Hall at The Ultimate Fighter 17 finale. While a victory over Story wouldn’t make him a top contender for the title, it would certainly put him in the mix of one of the toughest divisions in the UFC.
