Report: Jose Aldo vs. Ricardo Lamas Potential for Super Bowl Weekend

In the days leading up to UFC 166, UFC President Dana White talked to the media about what lies ahead for the UFC.  One of those plans includes booking Ricardo Lamas against UFC featherweight champion, Jose Aldo (pictured), for the UFC card on Super Bowl Weekend.

UFC President Dana White told media Thursday that the organization is looking to book a featherweight title fight between Ricardo Lamas and champion Jose Aldo for Super Bowl weekend.

Though the title fight makes sense, as it pits the champion against the No. 2 ranked contender, the bout has yet to be confirmed for the February 1 date of the anticipated card.

We’re talking about that [bout] Super Bowl weekend, but it’s not done yet,” White told Media.  “We’re talking about it, but we talk about a lot of things.”

Another title fight had already been talked about for that date, the light heavyweight title fight between Jon Jones and Glover Teixeira, but that bout had to be pushed back to give the champion Jones more time to recover from his UFC 165 bout with Alexander Gustafsson.

If the Aldo-Lamas fight is booked, it will take place at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.  While New Jersey is a break from the UFC’s tradition of holding its Super Bowl weekend card in Las Vegas, the Prudential Center is located very close to the MetLife Stadium where Super Bowl 48 will take place the following day.

Aldo is coming off a TKO win over ‘The Korean Zombie’ Chan Sung Jung at UFC 163 where he successfully defended his title for the fifth time.

Lamas is undefeated in the UFC.  In his most recent fights, he holds defeats over Cub Swanson, Hatsu Hioki and Erik Koch.

White made no mention of whether or not this bout was talked of headlining the card.  With a number of other title fights scheduled through the end of this year, however, it is a likely possibility that this featherweight title fight will work out best for a February date.

After this they better make Pettis vs Aldo. Aldo has already given all the top contenders in that division a shot.
