Conor McGregor, the Irish featherweight fighter who has been winning over fans since entering the UFC earlier this year, will be sidelined for about 10 months after suffering tears to both cartilage and a ligament in his knee, the UFC announced Thursday night on Twitter.
McGregor, who won a unanimous decision victory over Max Holloway this past Saturday night, reported feeling his knee pop halfway through the second round. Though UFC doctors initially cleared the injury as a sprain to the lateral collateral ligament, McGregor was due to undergo an MRI Thursday to be certain.
The UFC broke the news, tweeting, “BREAKING: @danawhite confirms to @FOXSportsLive that McGregor’s MRI shows ACL tear, MCL strain & posterior horn meniscal tear. Out ~10mo.”
For McGregor, who after Saturday is riding a 10-fight winning streak, the news is certainly unwelcomed. Wednesday, McGregor sent out a list of insults to the top fighters in the UFC’s featherweight division, likely looking to secure himself a fight against a big-name opponent.
The next day, news of the extent of McGregor’s injuries surfaced, leaving the featherweight plenty of time to consider who- and when- he will fight next.
