UFC 101 Main Event: BJ Penn vs. Kenny Florian

UFC Lightweight Champion BJ Penn is set to defend his lightweight title against number one contender Kenny Florian. The newly agreed upon match is set to Headline UFC 101 in Philadelphia, PA on August 8th 2009.

The Challenger, Kenny "Kenflo" Florian, is currently riding a six fight win streak inside the octagon. Most recently dispatching Joe Stevenson via RNC in round 1 at UFC 91. Florian has made it no secret that he desires his second shot at the lightweight title. Most recently stating on ESPNS MMA Live,

"At the end of the day, I just want this fight to be signed. Let's get an event, let's get a date, and let's make it happen."

The Champion, BJ "The Prodigy" Penn, has not been down to lightweight to defend his title since UFC 84, in May of 2008, when he beat Sean Sherk via TKO at the end of the third round. When I asked BJ about the upcoming bout he simply said,

"I look forward to the challenge."

According to our sources here within Team Penn, Florian has already signed the bout agreement for this fight. As for BJ, we received the bout agreement this afternoon and plan on making this fight happen.

I actually live in NJ but only live 15 mins and work 5 mins from Philly. Thanks to the UFC. Hope to see alot you you there. I will make sure to post pics.

Comment by Barry on March 31, 2009 at 1:21pm: This is going to be a tough fight. Personally, I would have started my hard training already (cycling my training 2x before the fight and resting 10-14 days between each cycle) if only to make extra sure that I'm going to win.

But not only that, but it seems that Kenny really, really believes that no one in mma has better cardio than him. I hope BJ makes it his mission in life to put Kenny's assumption to the grave.

That said, I think Kenny has the advantage in size. He going to try to bully BJ on the ground and he's going to make BJ chase him all over the ring like he does everyone else. He's going to make this an up and down, and back and forth game, mixing his style with GSP's advice. He's going to drill wrestling and staying on top with gnp, and do his best to stand up before BJ does if they ever hit the ground, just like St. Pierre did.

He's going to use a conservative, safe gameplan to grind this one out because he believes in his cardio and his skills to keep BJ away while he scores points.

My prediction: It goes all 5 rounds. BJ by decision. I hope it's BJ's win by k.o. but in my heart, I think it's going all 5 rounds.
