James Toney Looking Towards UFC Title Shot

Bookmark and Share
James “Lights Out” Toney must follow the saying go big or go home. Despite any formal Mixed Martial Arts experience, the boxer, who has fought in the heavyweight, super-cruiser weight, cruiserweight, light heavyweight, super middleweight, middleweight, divisions, wanted his first fight to be against UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar. Toney believed Lesnar was the logical first fight because, “He's a champion, I'm a champion and I wanted to do it.” According to story on MMAFIGHTING.COM, the UFC rebuffed Toney’s request for an immediate title shot and suggested Kimbo Slice (4-2). Toney’s response was, “That's too easy. That's like kicking a little kid's butt.” Randy Couture seems like he is just another fight in Toney’s quest to prove the world wrong and win the championship. Some might think looking past the task at hand and assuming success invites bad juju. James Toney is already planning his next fight. Assuming Toney wins against Couture, here is how the newcomer sees it, “If Lesnar gets by Cain Velasquez, I'll fight Lesnar in February or March. ... Lesnar ran away from Shane Carwin like a girl, but then Carwin ran out of gas and quit. But I'll fight any of them, any time anywhere. That's my motto.”

Well if Toney does win it will have to be the end for Couture, Kimbo was let go for loosing to a novice mma fighter if randy looses to an mma rookie, regardless of his boxing stature, then he has no top rank comp left in him, even if he wins it doesn't prove much of anything unless he trades with Toney and KOs his ass.

Gotta love Toney's attitude. MMA needs more lunatics like this. Its a shame that he really is washed up and didnt take on the game early. He was one of the most gifted boxers of all time and had amazing hands. BUt it takes years to learn the grappling game, wrestling etc. It truly is so hard to defend the takedown because of the speed it occurs at.

I wish Toney luck, I enjoy the comments.

exactly, i mean don't get me wrong couture is a legend and i def respect him and his place as a legend in the sport. but the guy has had soooo many title shots. i mean how do you lose your light heavyweight title to liddell then move up to heavyweight and figh tim slyvia for the title without fighting anyone at heavyweight and coming off a loss? thats just one example. i'm just saying beating a mark coleman & james toney doesn't prove much, go beat a rampage, thiago silva, ryan bader, and countless other good 205ers to warrant a title shot. and i'm glad to see i'm not the only one who thought he lost to vera

@ Fortyb4Five:
That's what I can't stand from the UFC. Randy gets a BS win vs Vera, beats a dead Coleman and now if he beats a washed up boxer and MMA rookie....he's in title contention?? WTF?!?

@Ryan I see what your sayin, but if he beats Toney which I think he will and if he gets title shot Shogun will just whoop his ass and send him packing anyway.

toney may not have had many KO's in boxing but he will be wearing little ass gloves in MMA so if he were to connect on coutures chin trust me it will be "lights out". 3 times in coutures past 4 fights he has been knocked down against lesnar nog and vera only coleman didn't knock him down and come on coleman is a washed up fighter. randy better get his arms around him quickly. this fight goes 1 of 2 ways. either toney KO's couture or its gonna be a ground and pound fest or quick sub for couture. i just don't know how long this fight will stay standing for toney to have a chance. whats he gonna do when he eats his first leg kick? if randy is smart it should be a easy victory. but honestly i'm getting tired of couture getting title shots. he LOSES to vera yet is awarded a win then beats bum coleman and if he beats toney the fuckin ufc will prob give him a title fight. whe you look at it who the fuck has he beat at 205 since returning to be awarded a title shot?

holyfield was 40 when james toney fought him i dont think thats holyfield's prime maybe james toney but you cant give credit to toney for beating an old holyfield but i guess he makes his career that way since he is fighting an old guy in randy but i hope this old guy puts toney down because he is just popping off at the mouth to promote his fight any of the top 5 in HW will run over him so his best bet is to fight the lower end fighters to atleast gain experience and stop tryn to use his camp to make him look like a fighting god until he comes in and shows he can really do something i chalk him up to nothing but another big mouth

I hope he pulls off the upset, BUT if he doesn't, expect "See, what had happened was..." to come out of his mouth. Every time a black person gets showed up, the first words that come out of their mouth is "See, what had happened was..." followed by some bullshit excuse.
