If Lyoto Machida bests Gegard Mousasi in their UFC Fight Night 36 showdown, his next fight could be for UFC gold.
UFC President Dana White announced on Wednesday that – if Machida does in fact win his fight next week against “The Dreamcatcher” – it would make a “strong statement” for Machida being next in line for a shot at the belt.
“Yes, if Machida wins, he could possibly be next in line for a title shot,” White told FOX Sports Live, when the topic of Machida’s divisional future was brought up.
Of course, even if Machida is victorious next week, he will have to wait to find out who he would be facing for the middleweight championship, as Vitor Belfort will be challenging the 185 pound champion, Chris Weidman, at UFC 173 this May.
Machida, once the UFC light heavyweight champion, looked outstanding last October during his first fight at middleweight, knocking Mark Munoz out cold with a head kick.
All eyes are on the middleweight division, as the next few months could drastically change the landscape for the 185-pounders.
