They banned the “downwards” elbow on the ground because martial artist can train by breaking big blocks of ice over and over and so they could possibly crush their opponents face. That’s why bones got DQ’d

agree with you, but I don’t fully disagree with you. as I watched Hardy jump all over Ludwig as Ludwig fell (after the left hook), and then I saw Hardy throw those elbows to an open, defenseless, target, I thought “damn, hardy, you didn’t have to do that.” And he didn’t. He could’ve punched him, but chose the elbow as his weapon. Legal, yes. But that was the first time EVER i didn’t agree with using elbows to strike.
So… your basically saying Dan Hardy should have gave ludwig more brain damage? Why is MMA safer than boxing? less hits to the head with a padded gloves. The elbow was hit on his forehead (Most protected part of your brain) that lead to the cut. If he had punched Ludwig instead it just would have caused more trauma to the brain. Hardy did him a favor.
Depending on where the punches landed obviously. An un-padded elbow is gonna do a lot more damage than a padded fist on the forehead. Kinda common sense.
I’m pretty sure he was trying to win the fight. As soon as you start trying to NOT hurt your opponent too bad….he gets up and kicks your ass and you say dammit I guess I shouldve hurt him worse! Its a FIGHT!

I am pretty sure if it was the other way around, Ludwig would have been raining down elbows on Hardy’s face. Can’t let your opponent off the hook once you rock him.
